Don't say gay, draconian abortion laws, and now they proposed this - no discussions for girls before 6th grade about periods! Can we just saw Florida off the mainland and set it adrift? They are 100% out of their frigging minds. I personally know a lot of girls who have their first period before 6th grade. I may see an old woman when I look in the mirror but once there was a little fifth grader looking back at me who was coming to germs with decades of "this" and it just was not fair... news.yahoo.com/florida-gop-bill-ban-girls-145244703.html That's just plain crazy. There were girls that were "developing" in my daughter's dance class as young as age 8. So DeSantis is going to pretend that nothing is happening until 6th grade?!? I have no words for such stupidity... that’s the way it sounds. I saw this article this morning and couldn’t believe that someone could be so stupid. I mean, doncha know that girls have to be in 6th grade before getting their periods? /s

I have no words for such stupidity... that’s the way it sounds. I saw this article this morning and couldn’t believe that someone could be so stupid. I mean, doncha know that girls have to be in 6th grade before getting their periods? /s A long while ago our school district reconfigured - previously there were 2 elementary schools k-6, and a Jr/Sr HS 7-12. So I remember many 6th grade "graduations" at the end-of-year awards programs, and being amazed at the subset of 6th graders who appeared to be in their 20s! Full beards on the boys, and girls who could truly pass for college grads, they were that developed and made-up/dressed. Every year! I also remember attending my first PTA meeting when DD1 started K. There was a presentation and some debate about the 5th or 6th grade "talk" about maturing/development. The administration was trying to gently point out that the 6th graders were going to be moving up to the HS, so would now be exposed to/mixing with kids up to 18, so really needed that talk (especially about the other gender) so they were prepared, not surprised. After the meeting a few other mothers asked me what I thought about the whole thing - duh, it's a good idea to give our kids the info they need to make good choices and know what's going on. Then they asked how old my child was (5); oh, you have lots of time before you need to face it. It was clear they wanted to keep their 6th graders in the dark, if we don't talk about s e x issues then the kids will just stay innocent children forever! Good luck with that. Meanwhile, I'm ready to just casually introduce bits and pieces here and there whenever topics come up, and in a way my kids are ready for developmentally - no one big "talk", tons of little talks over the years, just like any other topic. Totally normal topic, no secrecy necessary.

I had to correct Abby because she got the idea you had to have A LOT of sex before you had a baby. Umm no sweetie it only takes once so for the love of God use protection every time. Using tampons makes you no longer a virgin is still hanging around and won't die that's another one I heard through the grapevine. We can't leave kids in the hands of the internet and their peers. And considering my DH was one who believed the above about tampons till I literally smacked it out of his head we can't exactly trust parents either. Unless that is the goal. Ban abortion so you can't terminate, work on birth control and make sure they stay uneducated about their bodies. It's proven the easiest way to hobble a woman's rights is to make sure she isn't provided the opportunity to control her reproduction status.

Publisher Deletes Race From Rosa Parks Story for FloridaStudies Weekly, whose curriculum reaches 45,000 schools across the country, went to extreme lengths to cater to Ron DeSantis’ hellish vision of Florida. In an effort to protect its sales, the publisher removed references to race, including the history of Rosa Parks, from its social studies material, the New York Times reports. The crude update follows a push by the Florida governor to place a widespread ban on the teaching of topics deemed related to Critical Race Theory (CRT), and the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Although a judge recently denied a request from Florida’s government to block an injunction against DeSantis’ “Stop-Woke” act in the state’s public colleges, DeSantis’ administration rejected dozens of math books—claiming some contained CRT. In January, Florida blocked the College Board from testing a pilot Advanced Placement African American Studies (APAAS). In the lesson by Studies Weekly used in elementary schools today, segregation is clearly defined: “The law said African Americans had to give up their seats on the bus if a white person wanted to sit down.” But in the initial version created for Florida’s review, the lesson reads: “She was told to move to a different seat because of the color of her skin.” And in the second updated version, race is removed completely: “She was told to move to a different seat.” While NYT reports that it’s unclear which of the alternate versions were submitted for state review, the second update—which includes no mention of race—was posted on the publisher’s website until last week. The company also made “similar changes to a fourth-grade lesson about segregation laws that arose after the Civil War,” according to the report. While the initial version for the textbook review refers to African Americans and explains how they were impacted by Jim Crow, the second version deletes mentions of race. In the second update, it simply states that it was illegal for “men of certain groups” to be unemployed and that “certain groups of people” were not allowed to serve on a jury. While the publisher has since taken down its fact-less version of history and withdrawn from the state’s review following inquires from NYT, potential profit losses may coax them to offer another revision to DeSantis’ chopping block. Publisher Deletes Race From Rosa Parks Story for Florida I'm pretty sure Florida has been "not mentioning" race or slavery or lots of other things right along. I hear there are "historic" Florida places - that do NOT mention any of the black or brown people associated with that historic moment or place - even if the place bears that person's name no one talks about that person's skin color.... just tell a whitewashed story and let the person hearing it make assumptions about it.

I remember a girl in my 4th grade class starting her period and it was a BIG deal to all us females. The teacher talked to us girls about it, and I can't imagine her not being allowed to have that discussion. For the life of me I can't wrap my head around republicans accusing democrats of "trying to control people." I hear that one a lot here in TX. Seriously, it's like they live on a different planet. I hear them talking about the "liberty" to do what they please. The definition of liberty is "the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one's way of life, behavior or political views."
The war on transgender people is horrendous. How you can specifically target 1% of the population that has done absolutely nothing to harm anyone is beyond me. I guess they only care about liberty when it falls into something they care about, such as any idiot off the street being allowed to buy an assault riffle.

Turnabout is fair play. Don't drop the soap, Joe. Florida's 'Don't Say Gay' bill author facing up to 35 years in prisonJoe Harding, the now-former Florida Republican lawmaker who authored the extremist "Don't Say Gay" bill could face up to 35 years in prison after pleading guilty Tuesday afternoon to federal felony fraud charges in a scheme to obtain $150,000 in COVID-19 relief funds, according to Florida Politics‘ publisher Peter Scorsch. Harding, 35, was a construction project manager who started his own lawn care company. He quickly became a right-wing darling after his anti-LGBTQ legislation, officially the Parental Rights in Education Act, was embraced by Florida GOP Governor Ron DeSantis, who signed it into law. Harding was charged in a December federal indictment with six counts of wire fraud, money laundering, and making false statements in his plot to obtain $150,000 in COVID funds. He resigned from the legislature the following day. He originally pled not guilty. After Harding was charged and resigned, Nadine Smith, the executive director of Equality Florida, responded via social media, saying: "So much harm to students, parents and teachers because of his raw political ambitions. He slandered entire communities and trafficked in lie after lie that has emboldened violent bigotry. He will have his day in court but his legacy is already a despicable one." Harding is not the only family member accused of criminal acts. "Harding's indictment follows a September guilty plea from his brother-in-law, Patrick Walsh," Florida Politics reported in December. "As reported by Fresh Take Florida, Walsh pleaded guilty to wire fraud and money laundering charges connected to his receipt of nearly $8 million in disaster relief loans." Unrepentant to the harm many feel he has done to children and the LGBTQ community, in a statement Tuesday Harding said: "During the past legislative session I have felt the support of millions of Americans while fighting for our shared concerns and for the rights of parents. I will never forget the support I received from every corner of this great country." Harding will be sentenced in July. Florida's 'Don't Say Gay' bill author facing up to 35 years in prison

This article disturbed me reading it earlier today. Does the mother make her son wear a hood over his head when he takes a shower? God forbid he sees and touches his own genitals while bathing. Florida Principal Out After Viewing Of Michelangelo's 'David' Upsets ParentsOne parent reportedly called the masterpiece "pornographic." The principal of Florida’s Tallahassee Classical School is out of a job after parents complained that their sixth-grade children were shown Michelangelo’s 16th century “David” sculpture, with one parent calling it “pornographic,” the Tallahassee Democrat first reported. The now-former principal, Hope Carrasquilla, told HuffPost the situation was also “a little more complicated than that,” noting that the usual protocol is to send parents a letter before students are shown such classical artwork. Due to “a series of miscommunications,” the letter did not go out to the sixth-grade parents, and some complained, Carrasquilla said. One parent was “point-blank upset,” Carrasquilla continued, and “felt her child should not be viewing those pieces.” The board of the charter school decided Monday to give the principal the choice to resign or be fired after less than a year in the job. She was the school’s third principal since it opened in the fall of 2020, per the Tallahassee Democrat. The move comes as conservatives in Florida and elsewhere battle to step up their input in primary education. Michelangelo’s marble sculpture of the Biblical figure David was crafted between 1501 and 1504, originally commissioned for an Italian cathedral. It now resides at the Galleria dell’Accademia in Florence. Carrasquilla said she had taught in classical education for a decade and knew that “once in a while you get a parent who gets upset about Renaissance art” — hence the letter. She was not surprised by the reaction from the school board chair, Barney Bishop, but the fact that other board members went along with him was unexpected. In a call with HuffPost, Bishop emphasized that the nude sculpture incident was one of multiple issues with Carrasquilla. He declined to go into specifics, citing advice from the school’s employment lawyers. Bishop explained he was lobbying for legislation that would give parents even more input in primary education. “Parental rights trump everything else,” Bishop said. He added that the pandemic’s remote teaching gave parents a clearer window into their children’s education and prompted some to choose schools like Tallahassee Classical. “They didn’t like the woke indoctrination that was going on,” he said. Bishop accused Carrasquilla of trying to “gin up a lot of publicity” by sharing her experience. Carrasquilla said many other parents and faculty members were upset about her ouster and have been reaching out with support. The Tallahassee school is a public charter institution that focuses on classical learning, a teaching philosophy centered on a traditional Western liberal arts education that aims to impart critical thinking skills children can use throughout their lives. Classical learning is also popular within the Christian homeschooling movement. The Tallahassee Classical School is affiliated with Hillsdale College, a conservative Christian institution that has sought to expand its influence over the last decade by helping set up public charter schools. Hillsdale briefly cut ties with the Tallahassee school in early 2022 for not meeting improvement standards, but it later regained affiliation. Hillsdale has raised funds for the charter school network by pledging to fight “leftist” and “distorted” teaching of American history, such as the lessons about slavery contained in The New York Times’ 1619 Project, the newspaper reported last year. “We don’t use pronouns,” Bishop said. “We don’t teach CRT and we don’t ever mention 1619 — those are not appropriate subjects for our kids.” Florida Principal Out After Viewing Of Michelangelo's 'David' Upsets Parents

Pastor John Pavlovitz posted the below on Facebook this evening. I am relating it to the above post about the statue David. Would the woman not take her son to the Vatican and see The Creation on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel? And the man touching the hand of God has a penis. Sacré bleu! Or visit the Louvre Museum because her son might see the Venus de Milo as they enter the museum? How about the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Ooops! the son and mother might see this: It's all classic art for goodness sake.

This hurt my brain.... apparently we can't create locker rooms and bathrooms with enough "privacy" to keep from seeing other people's genitals so you pretty much are gonna see (or think about) the other persons genitals --- but it's wrong to see genitals anywhere else... even if the nakedness is part of history (like art).

what about taking a bath? do they put their kids in swimsuits? what is wrong with them identifying David as male? these people seem more trans than trans people generally are.

Knowing that a male statue has a penis is controversial? What is he supposed to have tattooed underwear like Ken?

The Simpsons have foretold real life AGAIN though they were to optimistic. There is an episode that I call "think of the children" where this idiotic behavior is implemented in Springfield. The big difference with real life? In the cartoon it it Michelangelo's "David" that brings sanity back.

I'm mostly shocked by the school board chair (Bishop) saying "We don't use pronouns."
That clause deserves some serious mockery.

Knowing that a male statue has a penis is controversial? What is he supposed to have tattooed underwear like Ken? Ken below the waist.

Sorry Tenn., I didn't see this until I'd already posted my thread on shielding travel records in Fl. And I came to post about teaching racism as a "theory"....unreal! From the link above...

ironically, i would be fine with him treating RACE as a theory. i think that is fair game. but racism is a real thing.
