The thing is, if he told the truth about a lot of things, he probably would've have still won. Growing up poor with parents that worked low paying jobs and running for congress pulls at heart strings too. Mom dying too soon from cancer would have gotten some sympathy. Everyone has skeletons, but he created some pretty unnecessary ones for himself on his own.

Prolly not the most reliable source.  On the other hand, since he's already served his time and been deported, he's probably not looking for a deal

Prosecutors accept deal with George Santos in Brazilian fraud case

Prosecutors in Brazil have agreed to a deal with Rep. George Santos in a case in which he is accused of defrauding a Rio de Janeiro area clerk of $1,300 over clothes and shoes in 2008, documents obtained by CNN show.

A petition from Santos’ attorney requesting a deal says Santos would agree to formally confess to the crime and pay damages to the victim, a Rio de Janeiro area clerk, as is required under Brazilian law.

A memo from prosecutors agreeing to the deal last week asked the defense for assurances they have the ability to contact the victim to repay him before the deal is finalized.

The petition from Santos’ attorney, filed in January, requests a non-prosecutorial agreement in lieu of a trial for his client, arguing that Santos is now gainfully employed and “re-socialized.” The petition also requested permission for Santos to be contacted by the court via email or phone, and participate in the proceedings via videoconference.

Agreements can be reached in non-violent cases where the sentencing minimum is under four years.

Santos did not comment when asked about this reporting on Capitol Hill by CNN’s Manu Raju. CNN has reached out to attorneys for Santos in Brazil and the United States.

In 2010, Santos told police he wrote bad checks from a stolen checkbook belonging to an elderly man his mother cared for to purchase the items.

Santos told the New York Post in December he had not been charged with any crime in Brazil. “I am not a criminal here – not here or in Brazil or any jurisdiction in the world. Absolutely not. That didn’t happen,” he said at the time.

After Santos left for the United States, Brazilian authorities could not find an address to serve him papers intimating him to appear in court, which eventually led to the archiving of the case, until it was reopened in January.

Prosecutors could not comment further, as the case is under a gag order.

Exclusive: Rep. George Santos charged by Justice Department in federal probe

Federal prosecutors have filed criminal charges against New York Rep. George Santos, the Republican lawmaker whose astonishing pattern of lies and fabrications stunned even hardened politicos, according to three sources familiar with the matter.

Santos is expected to appear as soon as Wednesday at federal court in New York’s eastern district, where the charges have been filed under seal.

The exact nature of the charges couldn’t immediately be learned but the FBI and the Justice Department public integrity prosecutors in New York and Washington have been examining allegations of false statements in Santos’ campaign finance filings and other claims.

The congressman’s attorney declined to comment. Spokespeople for the Brooklyn US Attorney’s Office, the Justice Department and the FBI declined to comment.

Mr. Santos was charged with seven counts of wire fraud, three counts of money laundering, one count of theft of public funds, and two counts of making materially false statements to the House of Representatives.

The charges leave some tantalizing questions unanswered, particularly about his second financial disclosure statement. For example, prosecutors say that he falsely certified that he earned $750,000 from his company, the Devolder Organization, and that he had received between $1 million and $5 million in dividends from Devolder. In the press release, prosecutors note: “These assertions were false. Santos had not received from the Devolder Organization the reported amounts of salary or dividends.”

Santos will never see a second term (two years per term).

Under both CSRS and FERS, Members of Congress are eligible for a pension at the age of 62 if they have completed at least five years of service.

McCarthy is on record saying that he will let the judicial process play out, which could easily take Santos to term.

but he has also said if the ethics committee votes to remove him, he will.

Judge orders unsealing of Santos’s bond sponsor names Thursday

A federal judge on Tuesday denied Rep. George Santos’s (R-N.Y.) latest attempt to keep sealed the identities of the people who financially backed his criminal bond.

U.S. District Judge Joanna Seybert, an appointee of former President Clinton, ordered the names be unsealed at noon EDT Thursday, giving the bond sureties a window to withdraw beforehand.

coalition of media organizations pushed to make the filings public, but Joe Murray, Santos’s attorney, previously indicated the embattled congressman would rather be detained ahead of trial than allow their identities to be unsealed.

Murray has repeatedly cited a “media frenzy” in attempting to keep the bond sureties names’ private, saying the congressman fears for their health and safety. Murray has also suggested at least one of Santos’s bond sponsors is a relative.

“Defendant may move to modify the conditions of his release, should the Suretors seek to withdraw from serving as suretors,” Seybert wrote in the brief ruling, although her attached opinion remains under seal.
