Croatia are giant killers ... Who would have thought they would beat Brazil. Just shear grit and a refusal to give up.

this match may actually be better than this morning's one, wow. I can't say I've ever seen benches clear in a WC match before. this is nuts!

When seasoned announcers are saying, "BEST QUARTERFINALS DAY EVER! BOOK IT!" Yeah, I'll go with that.

Grant Wahl was the American sports journalist who was detained by World Cup security guards several weeks ago for wearing a tee shirt with a rainbow on it. Grant Wahl, soccer journalist, dies at 48 in Qatar while covering World CupSoccer analyst Grant Wahl died in Qatar while covering a World Cup match between Argentina and the Netherlands on Friday, just days after his 48th birthday. Wahl's wife, Dr. Celine Gounder, confirmed his death Friday night on Twitter, writing she was in "complete shock." Gounder also expressed gratitude for support from the "soccer family & of so many friends who've reached out tonight." Wahl, a sports journalist for CBS Sports and author of the GrantWahl Substack column, had covered eight men's World Cup tournaments. U.S. media seated near him said Wahl fell back in his seat in a section of Lusail Iconic Stadium reserved for journalists during extra time of the game, and reporters adjacent to him called for assistance. Emergency services workers responded very quickly, the reporters said, and the reporters later were told that Wahl had died. “He received immediate emergency medical treatment on site, which continued as he was transferred by ambulance to Hamad General Hospital,” the World Cup organizing committee said in a statement, which did not list a cause of death. “We are in touch with the US Embassy and relevant local authorities to ensure the process of repatriating the body is in accordance with the family’s wishes.” Although an official cause of death has not been shared, Wahl wrote that he had been suffering from a "severe" illness that required him to visit a medical clinic in Qatar. "My body finally broke down on me. Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you," Wahl wrote Monday on his World Cup Daily newsletter. “What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort. I didn’t have Covid (I test regularly here), but I went into the medical clinic at the main media center today, and they said I probably have bronchitis. They gave me a course of antibiotics and some heavy-duty cough syrup, and I’m already feeling a bit better just a few hours later. But still: No bueno.” Ned Price, a spokesman for the U.S. State Department, said the government is "engaged with senior Qatari officials to see to it that his family’s wishes are fulfilled as expeditiously as possible." Wahl is survived by his wife Gounder, an infectious disease specialist and epidemiologist at New York University, who served on the Biden-Harris Transition COVID-19 Advisory Board. They met at Princeton University and married in 2001 in Seattle. MLS commissioner Don Garber said Wahl "will be deeply missed." "We are shocked, saddened and heartbroken over the tragic passing of Grant Wahl. He was a kind and caring person whose passion for soccer and dedication to journalism were immeasurable," Garber tweeted. "Grant was an important member of the soccer community for more than two decades." U.S. Soccer also issued a statement Friday. "The entire US soccer family is heartbroken to learn that we have lost Grant," the statement read. "Fans of soccer and journalism of the highest quality knew we could always count on Grant to deliver insightful and entertaining stories about our game and its major protagonist: teams, players, coaches and the many personalities that make soccer unlike any sport. Here in the United States Grant's passion for soccer and commitment to elevating its profile across our sporting landscape played a major role in helping to drive interest in and respect for our beautiful game." The statement concluded: "We thank Grant for his tremendous dedication to and impact on our game in the United States. His writing and the stories he told will live on." Great final game. Glad Messi got his World Cup. Only down side was Argentina's goalie's obscene gesture with the gold glove award.

I'm glad I turned it off after the PKs. I had actually turned it off in favor of restarting White Christmas after Argentina went up 2-0. I put the game on my.phone, with no sound.
coming into this WC, I'd have probably said I was pulling most for Messi and Ronaldo. but after the disgusting display of shitty sportsmanship by ARG in the quarters, I was pulling for anyone but them. thankfully Mbappe snagged the golden boot.

A great final, End to end in the last half an hour it could have gone either way.
Argentina deserved their win. Pleased for Messi
and very impressed with the young French superstar, Kylian Mbappe

I didn't see the latter.

South American teams have been known to take more dives .......... ie ... a big dramatic fall and a roll around on the floor, when they have barely been touched.(to try and get a free kick) Then again, a French player did a dive in the penalty area and was given a yellow card. VAR and slow motion replay helps with this. but yes...... the Argentinians were appealing every decision in the quarters, like they were victims of a bias in the refereeing. They are great players there is just no need. Poor behaviour has been going on years, I don't know if FIFA will ever get on top of it. US, Mexico and Canada are hosting the next World Cup.

So I was a few days off. Brazilian soccer legend Pelé dies at 82Sao Paulo, Brazil CNN Pelé, the Brazilian soccer legend who won three World Cups and became the sport’s first global icon, has died at the age of 82. “Everything that we are, is thanks to you,” his daughter Kely Nascimento wrote in a post on Instagram, under an image of family members holding Pele’s hands. “We love you infinitely. Rest in peace.” Pelé was admitted to a hospital in São Paulo in late November for a respiratory infection and for complications related to colon cancer. Last week, the hospital said his health had worsened as his cancer progressed. He died on Thursday from multiple organ failure due to the progression of colon cancer, according to a statement from Albert Einstein Hospital. Brazilian soccer legend Pelé dies at 82

He was a great player and great for the sport. When he came to the USA to play interest in the sport took off. A great ambassador. Every forward wants the coveted number 10.

Not that that means diddly squat but he was “famous” and I’ll admit I never understood soccer for the most part. But I can say I saw Pele play
