...and it didn't take very long for the cockroaches to swarm. But Musk, a self-described "free speech absolutist," has fiercely criticized the company's previous leaders as overly rigid and suppressive and said he would work to overturn some of the company's main enforcement mechanisms, such as indefinitely suspending accounts.
A wide range of anonymous Twitter accounts celebrated Musk's takeover and argued it meant the old rules against bigotry no longer applied.
"Elon now controls twitter. Unleash the racial slurs. K—S AND N—S," said one account, using slurs for Jews and Black people. "I can freely express how much I hate n—s . . . now, thank you elon," another said.
In a tweeted letter Thursday, Musk had sought to soothe advertisers worried over the moderation changes by saying he did not want it to become a "free-for-all hellscape."
But the first hours of his purchase have shown how difficult that promise could be. One account, created this month, included a Nazi swastika as its profile picture and retweeted quotes from Musk alongside antisemitic memes. Another tweet, showing a video montage glorifying Nazi Germany with the comment, "I hear that there have been some changes around here," was liked more than 400 times.
Racial slurs were posted rampantly overnight. One single-word tweet, showing a single racial slur in all capital letters, was retweeted more than 500 times and liked more than 4,000 times. It was tweeted at 9 p.m. Thursday night and remained online nearly 12 hours later.

Elon is one of those spoiled rich kids who is very bright but doesn't know what he doesn't know.
I see this ending badly.

How long before advertisers begin to pull out? Hopefully soon and hopefully all of them. If they don’t, people will realize what those companies stand for and stop buying.

Really? Musk had been the chief twit for maybe 20’minutes and some want to blame him for this? Think that’s what he’s calling and trying to prevent - a hellscape Hoping trump doesn’t return and also hoping the chief Iranian Khameni doesn’t continue to use it to call for death for Israel There’s a lot he can do Maybe like Whatsap in China - banking, social media ,translation etc BUT not the creepy social points as in China Our family used Whatsap when 2 DGSs were in China. It’s very handy for family or group chats. Stopped using about year after they returned because of the CCP social surveillance and ratings

I think Musk has sent mixed messages on what he envisions as free speech and what is a hellscape. time.

Allegedly he will keep 75% of Twitter's workforce. Interesting to see if that remains true before we roll into 2023.

He's already fired a bunch of top management. I expect it will be a mix of two things - getting rid of those he does not agree with and disappearing some people and jobs to keep Twitter profitable for him. MO. YMV.

Bringing in your people at the top makes sense. Profitable makes sense. Cutting excess employees certainly helps the bottom line. But was Twitter being so poorly run that 25% of their workforce was excess? Just seems extreme to me.

Only he knows what is lurking in his head, but I am sure that figure was put out there with some thought. He paid more than he wanted to for Twitter. Cutting enough employees to improve his cash flow is a very Musk thing to do IMO.

From Bills' above linked article:
Gee-'he who shall not be named but lives around a space center in Florida' spent some time trying to convince us all most of the quoted information was true except he told us Hillary only had a couple more weeks to live-late stage Parkinson's disease.
And 'DON'T DOUBT ME. EVER!'

To live in a society to be free that also means free to hate. I feel what I feel. Society, free or otherwise, can not control that fact. What is at issue is not a feeling (hate) and not even the behavior of speech. Rather it is the use of a tool to amplify that speech and the responsibility that should be placed on those who control that tool.

Trump is nearly peeing himself in anticipation of being allowed back in, which brings up an interesting question. Trump has only ever had a sliver of the followers on Truth Social that he had on Twitter. If he quits Truth Social, will that chaotic, struggling company tank? If Trump rejoins Twitter and Musk allows it to become a breeding ground for far right conspiracies and hate speech, will it have any advertisers at all? Nazi themed merchandise and guns maybe?

This company is doomed. Laying off 3700 employees, and lawsuit already in place. Bringing in 50 of his tesla engineers with no IT or social media experience. Canceling rest days. Requiring everyone left to return to office full time. No monitoring of hate speech. Raising prices for verified accounts. What a mess!
I've never had a twitter account, and already thought it was garbage, so its going to be fun to watch it implode and Musk lose billions of dollars. I feel really bad for the laid off employees though, so close to the holidays! Hopefully they can find better jobs!

Most of them had their last day of work but will be paid through February sometime. Read an article on that earlier today. Laying off 50% of your workforce is not a way to inspire confidence. I wonder if he's planning to make Twitter last the year.
