Mister, his Dad and Kiddo are gone to the hospital to visit his Mom. Dad was in trouble again today when Mister got home. Mister gets frustrated because his Dad doesn’t listen. He use to say that about his Dad even before all this happened, and now I see what he means. When you are telling him something, he cuts you off, thinking he knows the rest of what you are going to say, and he is usually wrong lol. Or if you ask him to repeat what you just said, he can’t, because he was only pretending to be listening in the first place. So now, with him here with us, that habit of his causes him to not do what Mister is asking him to do. And it’s driving Mister crazy. He is constantly telling his Dad, stop talking and LISTEN to what I’m saying. I remember Mister talking about how his Dad doesn’t listen, so I don’t think that’s dementia, unless maybe if he does have dementia, it made it even worse. Mister is almost constantly trying to figure out what is just the way his Dad is and has always been, and what might be dementia. He doesn’t want to hold things that might be dementia against his Dad, but it’s also become very clear these last few months that there are things about his Dad that his Mom managed and handled behind the scenes and kept anyone from knowing, even her children. I respect that, because as his wife, she was presenting a united front and all that. But those things, Mister doesn’t have much patience for. He’s not interested in playing the role his Mom plays in his Dad’s life. Genuine memory issues and confusion, he does have patience for. This makes a lot of sense and it's tough to separate ingrained habits of behavior from dementia. The challenge of many conversations is that one party is only listening to the extent they are planning their reply, not REALLY listening. I'm guilty of that sometimes too

Well, we went maybe 36 hours without someone throwing up... The missy is already going stir crazy from being inside. I'd take her to an indoor play place tomorrow, but I'm afraid she's just going to get sick again. I have been having her wear a mask there, which has helped. But. we are the only ones masked..

I got back on this one finally. Like I said it was bad, I was starting to wonder if the flight was going to be cancelled. The flight was full and lots kids. We figured it would be wild, but they were very well behaved. Noone got upset or rude, everyone was pleasant. We got DD wheelchairs which was our saving grace, the attendants helped us with everything which speeded our passages through the airports. I had not intended to but they were so helpful we tipped them $20 each. The flight was very smooth, surprisingly. Then we got to Seattle. Well, a worse mess, sleeting. They did not have our vehicle. We were trying to get insurance and didn't think we had to pay that much but with the storm we gave in. But when she wanted to charge more for another car I said NO. We aren't doing that, I was starting to get mad it was about 2AM or so and we were tired. I said a mid sized car and I'm not paying more, she tried to give us a truck or minivan, for more money! No. So she gave us a Mercedes, smaller, hubs said we will probably get hit for extra charges, I will be pi***d if we do. The rental car place was a mess, no more renting from Hertz. The highway was a sheet of ice. We saw a couple of spin outs and the other side of the road were some wrecks. Hubs and other cars got up to 40 a few times. It took us a couple of hours to get up there.. So anyway we finally made it at 3AM in the morning. We were supposed to be here at 9:30. And we are glad to be here and will enjoy the family. They try this all the time. We were in Turkey and were offered an upgrade automatic for an increased cost. We just said we’d take what we ordered, thanks. I think they thought we couldn’t drive a standard, since both are Americans, and many don’t drive a stick. Both of us do, so it really didn’t matter. But an automatic goes at a premium in Europe. (Thinking back, same thing happened to us in France.) The thing is, they did not have the car we ordered so got the upgrade automatic for what we paid. We have been upgraded to pick ups, jeeps, SUVs and a couple of luxury cars, when I usually reserve a compact. Every car rental place we have used has tried this on us, so if you start eliminating those who try this, you won’t have any rental agencies left.

My original game plan for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day was to chill and watch junk TV and cook. This weather thing and a non-working generator means I have to stay really busy to keep from freaking out. Cleaned the floors and bathrooms today. Tomorrow is 2-3 loads of laundry, clean the kitchen counters and appliances, alcohol run, whatever I can do to stay sane. If I get stressed out enough, I'll vacuum the upholstered furniture and clean the leather furniture.

Another thing his Dad does, is if you start talking about something he doesn’t want to hear or deal with, he will start a whole ‘nother conversation out of the blue, completely unrelated to the subject. A made up example, Mister says “Dad we need to talk about your finances and make sure everything is paid”. Dad says “I talked to your Aunt Sally today and did you know this, that and the other”.
It’s been kind of funny witnessing it, but not so much when I think about how it drives Mister crazy. That’s not new either. But it matters now that Mister is having to help him, and Mister has to be mindful of not letting his Dad deflect and staying on the topic at hand. His Dad is pretty much a genius at deflecting and having a totally different conversation than the one you are trying to have lol.
I learned years ago from a friend that was a master at it, how to answer a question without actually answering it. I’m still not as good at it as she is lol. Mister’s Dad is probably better than both of us, and is on a whole ‘nother level, because he can keep a conversation going without even bothering to try to answer the question if you aren’t paying attention.
My Mom, who is a bit of a shyster for real, isn’t even that good lol.

I'm guilty of that sometimes too Imo, really listening and hearing what is being said is something a lot of us can work on. Because like you said, we often only listen enough to prepare our reply. When I have something to say to Mister that I feel is really important, I tell him I need you to really listen to me and hear what I’m saying. I probably shouldn’t have to say that, but I do say it, so whatever. It’s rare that I say that, and he does actually really listen when I say it.

I don't know what is her likely mental illness vs. what could be dementia. With dad gone, now, there is no one to fact check with. I suspect there's some of both going on.

I have no Christmas spirit this year. I have tried faking it until I'm making it.
It has been a banner year for fudge and peanut butter blossoms. But that's not enough to cut it.

And i don't even know what peanut butter blossoms are. I made soup. The dog got brushes. That's the best I can do this year.

Also, T1 just informed me that her car insurance lapsed and they won't reinstate it. Why did I have children?! The shoe-makers children always seems to come true. Dh and I messed up on car insurance once. I'm pretty sure progressive took us. I quoted it everywhere. Progressive wanted $300/month which she can't pay. I finally found it at esurance (an Allstate company) for $169/month. She has stuff falling off her record in the next 6 months and her rate should be much better then and we can shop it again. I'm going to have to get a better paying job if I'm going to be paying everyone's bills.

That is the station I normally watch. Mark is not wrong. Having reporters standing at the side of the road telling people not to drive is stupid. I don't disagree with that, at all. that said, the first comment on a local news station's FB post on the story was something like "well, they can't all be Shelby Scott!" see her obit from earlier this year, below. she was a legendary local weather reporter. Tenn might remember her as well, not sure exactly when he left this area. www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/former-wbz-tv-anchor-reporter-shelby-scott-has-died/Mark Woodley is the sports anchor. He is the top sports guy. I know that is a large part of why he was so p*ssed.

This afternoon, Boy came in the bedroom where I was and I was like “heyyy baby”, and petting on him. Then he started walking toward the bedroom door, peeing as he was walking. Sighhhh.
I didn’t hold that one against him, because I think maybe he came back there to get me to let him outside and I missed his cues and didn’t know what he wanted. He will sit in front of the outside door if he needs to go out, but that only works if someone is sitting in the den or happens to walk through. Since he sleeps in our bedroom, if he needs to go out in the wee hours of the morning, he puts his paws on Mister’s side of the bed so he can get up and let him out. After he does his business, he comes back inside and goes back to sleep. He has led me to the door a few times like OG used to do, but he is not as persistent as she was, so it’s difficult to figure it out when he really wants/needs something (to go outside).
So he does do stuff to let us know when he needs to go out, which is why I think maybe I dropped the ball when he came in the bedroom today. When I realized what he was doing I said “Hey! No!” and he ran through the house to the door with me following close behind to let him outside.
He really does not like cold weather at all, and even before it got cold, he preferred for one of us to go out with him before he would go down the steps and do his business. But now, even though it’s cold, even if we don’t go out with him, if he really needs to go, he’ll run down the steps and do his business, then run back to the door so he can come inside.
He’s learning and seems to be trying to please us, I guess I just need to get better at reading his more subtle cues so I can let him outside when he needs to go.

He’s not interested in playing the role his Mom plays in his Dad’s life. Genuine memory issues and confusion, he does have patience for. Mom said for years that "your father is not doing well", but she would never explain what she meant. She also wouldn't tell hospice what she meant. They told us that couples are very good at covering up for each other, with one being able to do the things the other one can no longer do. When she first died, I did not notice signs of dementia, so I don't know if that is what she was referring to. He lived 6 years after she died and I noticed it beginning about the 3rd year after she died. She also had a way of getting him to do exactly what she wanted him to do, which neither my sister nor I ever figured out. Life would have been so much easier if she had taught us that secret. DN1 was telling me last week that they almost didn't take the car from my parents because dad kept insisting an 11 year old car was in mint condition. We all no that no car is in mint condition the minute you drive it off the lot. Yes it had low miles and had been very well taken care of, but it was 11 years old. The amount dad wanted for the car was much higher than they were willing to pay for the car. Mom already knew she was giving them the car but she hadn't yet convinced dad. Apparently she got DN1 aside and told him not to worry about the price and to sign the papers. So he did. And she let him know a few months later, when he sent the first payment, that the car was theirs and to send no more payments. She just had to get him to come around.

I missed Penny's cues that she needed to crap a few times when she first got here. Then she would tuck her tail and whimper, expecting me to beat her or scold her at least. Penny was mistreated in her prior life, maybe because of her personality. But never by me. And when she learned I just cleaned it up, she taught me her signals. Now she will bark at me if I don't get it! She's a quirky dog who better take good care of me because she dislikes my family. But she's my quirk. Boy is still learning.

Pink - Boy seems trainable, can you teach him to ring a string of bells on the back door when he needs to go out?
Also, pits are REALLY bad about handling cold weather (on average). Sweatshirts help mine stay out longer and enjoy the cold or rain more. Look for pitbull specific coats. They are so deep-chested that normal dog clothes don't fit.
Yah, I'm THAT dog lady in the street. I'll own it. He even has pajamas. He's 100lbs.

I suspect that part of it too is I am out far enough out of crisis mode where there is no need for me to be strong and all of that. In a few weeks, it will be two years since dad went to the hospital to essentially die. Last year I was simply grateful to be alive and all the feelz that go with a health thing.
Part of me is like "WTF" I fought the good fight do deal with sick kids for two months? That's it? That's what I get to look forward to? For a year I yearned just to have my ordinary life back. Now that I have it, I don't want it. I don't know that the alternative was. One of my coworkers died 4 years ago. For some reason, thank goodness, the whole office knew she head breast cancer except for me. She elected to not get treated with medically accepted treatment. Which, given how long she lived when she was sick, I don't think found out when, say the cancer had gone to her bones. I think about her, and I absolutely know I could never make that choice. She was estranged from her kid and went through a bad divorce. I think she had a lot of friends. Her relationship with her mom was also dubious. Even with those things, I am no wired to try to treat cancer with yoga. I can't imagine not fighting. But, I'd like to think I fought for more than the privilege of cleaning up substances that are forcefully evicted from my kids' bodies.

My mom is fighting some weird pneumonia-like thing so Christmas Eve at their house has been postponed. Her sisters took her to urgent care in FL 10 days ago and it still hasn't improved with antibiotics. We shall be hunkered down an additional day at home I guess. Hope she gets better soon!

Of course, I vaguely remember my own name so that's not saying much. I think I remember that you grew up in NH, though. you might not have had this station up there. also, her favorite spot was the Natick rest stop on the Pike, so, basically my backyard. other reporters park themselves up in Lexington (I think? the rest stop after route 2 on 128) and some lady on 25 likes the McD's plaza on rt 3 near me. but I grew up with Shelby, and that comment nailed it. 👏👏👏

I guess one good thing about it being zero with major windchill is that the crowds were low.
I need to go out tomorrow to drop off mom's gifts, get scratch off tickets, get something for my uncle and buy the dang salsa I forgot.
I'm finally eating dinner. I should start baking and cooking when I'm done and I don't want to. In order for all the errands to happen tomorrow, I need to get stuff done tonight. I also need to clean up my room. My cousin and his wife will be staying tomorrow night. I'm going to a hotel. It's easier for me one person to move. And they'll be here with their two dogs.

Every car rental place we have used has tried this on us, so if you start eliminating those who try this, you won’t have any rental agencies left. thank you for this. I saw cg's post earlier, but wasn't in a position to tap out a meaningful reply. my current employer allows for Avis or Budget, and I so much miss Hertz. when I started travelling for work, Hertz was the only company that would rent in Europe while I was still under 25yo. at home in the YS, or in Europe, Hertz is the platinum standard for customer service IMHO. when my own car shit the bed this summer, I logged back in and booked under the rates and rules linked to my existing credentials. whoops, that was kind of a panic booking, if anyone remembers that saga. but, I've travelled twice since and booked cars with Avis, and just...ugh. o haven't bothered to create accounts with either bci keep hoping this rule goes away and I can fill in current employer deets on the Hertz account.

Gwen and I made peanut butter fudge from my mom's recipe.
It's super easy a can of condensed milk, a bag of butterscotch chips and a cup of peanut butter all melted together and pour into a pan lined with greased wax paper.
She was pretty excited to participate.
Then we made rice krispie treats. I was concerned at first because Gwen was freewheeling it but she nailed it.
If we couldn't get it my dad assured me he has made them before so he would take over if we botched it.
I had more ambitions but yet again DH let one of Abbys friends stay the night. But she wants to go home instead and her mom won't be available till 11.
And drama ensues between the kids. They are getting along now.
I could strangle DH. He never learns. It is not going to tramautize Abby if we don't allow sleepovers anymore. I don't care about his memories as a kid.
As sexist as it sounds girls really are different than boys and I just do not have the patience for tween girl drama. I got enough with my own I don't need bonus tweens.

and also, re: people with selective hearing. I hung up on my sister tonight, when she turned a call to update me on a (valid) customer complaint into berating me for defending* a super huge company (SHC) against the small businesses they host on their online platform.
*I defended nothing, and agreed with her about how X, Y, Z was shitty on the company's part. but because in the next breath, I pointed out where SHC was within their rights to do so under the contract that the small business agreed to, I'm now somehow "defending" SHC. 🙄🙄🙄 zero regret in hanging up on her, just waiting on the fallout after Xmas when she whines to the parents. again, why do I answer the phone when I see her name? I think I'll pass for the next long time.

I book Hertz or Enterprise depending on the price tag. I have accounts with both. The others are never cheaper and Budget pulled shady stuff on me when I had a rental for work.
I've frequently had the car I booked not be available but I've never been asked to upgrade or been charged extra. All the upgrades were complimentary.
In Rochester this month, I was booked into compact/economy whatever the government standard is. They very happily handed me the keys to a minivan. My receipt showed booked class and class driven. No price change.
I will pay a few more dollars per day for Hertz because I've got Five Star status so my name should be on the board and away I can go and they are open 24 hours in Orlando's airport. Enterprise was closing at midnight. Flight delays have got me there after midnight many times.
I think it's hard when everyone is tired and frustrated.

And now the sheriff has declared a state of emergency. Roads are closed. No travel u less you work in emergency services. Plows have been pulled off roads due to lack of visibility. Fire departments won’t be coming if you need them.
I’m done with winter.
