College tour weekend. Western IL too spread out and "not a happening vibe", Bradley was and 8/10 but sounds hard to put together double major. Butler tomorrow and Eastern IL Monday. Def thinking small lib arts for dd16 and need to circle back to Drury in Springfield MO bc they seem to best fit so far. Hoping teen likes Eastern as seems to match on paper. Several of my Cousins Went to Western, and also several Graduated from Bradley. DH's really good friends sent their son to a school in Iowa for Engineering. He got a scholarship but did not maintain the right GPA to be guaranteed admission into the engineering program, so they had him transfer to Bradley. He Graduated, I think on time and is working in Chicago for an Engineering Firm. His younger brother also went to Bradley as a Computer Science Major. The other business people that attend the parties with us say he really knows his stuff and would have lots of job offers if he wanted to change companies. Good Luck on your college tours. My DD only wanted to go to UW-Whitewater and refused to do any college tours (other than UWW). I am frantically reconciling DH's accounts so I can finish my taxes on Monday (I took the day off). I am in the CC account right now, but I also have 3 months of the checking account to do. DH was campaigning for Harris this am, and then when I talked to him this afternoon he was helping my son with something, but he said he will be home soon. Have to try to get ahold of mom to inform her we are not going to church tonight. Asked DD if she would take mom, but she was working this am, and also has to finish her taxes. She is waiting on info from her husband. I have done so much for my mom this last year I am way behind. DS is in a similar position.

Good morning, illustrious invisipeeps, gaining promotions, doing chores, caring for canines and redoing homes. Welcome to Saturday. I hope your day offers you much good mirth and maybe some cheesecake or, if you're lactose intolerant, meringues. I spent a good part of yesterday working on calendars for 2025. It's challenging to pick the best pictures for the months. DD was asked to work as the lead provider at a flu shot clinic in Boston on Tuesday next week. She agreed; she needs the $$. I told her that we'll want to leave 2.5 hours before she needs to be there at 8 a.m. just because traffic. Going home should not be a problem. This is in a nice posh part of Boston, so should be a good day. It's gotten quite chilly here at night, down to the low 40's. I must find my winter gloves to walk the beach in the morning. Today I have no significant plans except for maybe organizing my part of the bedroom. It's daunting but needs to be done. I'll bring up a small set of shelves from the basement to start. I don't think DH will be needing dialysis for some time to come so I'm not going to worry about space for supplies. Ozempic is a great medication. Yesterday's dawn was very nice and before it I saw a Great Blue Heron stalking breakfast amont the rocks: I loved working the big flu clinics, they're a lot of fun. Luckily, I only had to drive 10 minutes to get there..

My yard is ready for winter. Guys asked if I wanted them to take the boxes in the garage. I said yes, so that is all gone, too. Nice young men. Had a car seat in the cab of the pickup, so someone has a child.
Asked what arrangement I had for snow. Told them I'm covered. Asked cost. Said they would charge more because of distance. Yes, that's why I hire a company that lives on town over and has many commercial accounts in that town and my town. I also make it clear to him that I am in no hurry and can be last on his list. He was good enough to get me out in time for work when I still needed that. I will keep him.
Asked about mowing. Told him neighbor does that. Didn't ask further questions about that arrangement. It would be the same thing. Because of distance they would charge more than neighbor does.
I should get some shelving for the garage space that has been cleared out so my bulk things like toilet paper, paper towels, kleenex, etc. have a place to live besides the garage floor.

Three days of no phone, internet or TV -- we did fine with the rest of the storm aftermath. We are cleaned up and the lawn mowed and all the bushes are trimmed. I do need to wash my car tomorrow, after I run. There is a lot of tornado damage around us. Unreal what I saw going to swim practice. Main roads were clear, but still a lot of cleanup. People with damaged homes or no homes, a lot of power still out.
We had plenty to eat and we were safe. We are grateful. Thank you for the update - I am happy you came through it without serious damage

I scored at Big Lots. For less than $350 I got 2 rugs, 2 nice throw blankets, 5 curtain sets, some bar glasses, dog treats, some spatulas, and a bunch of packing tape.

Butler too white and too rich so we dipped even before tour was over. I could tell by both girls faces that their minds were closed.
Bradley jumped higher for teen overnight and a bit lower for dd16. Teen looked at price tag and is now worried. I said we will continue to look into it and I'll make a call next week anonymously to ask them some questions based on her status. If nothing else we know compact campus and under 7k undergrad students is important to her.
Spent a couple hours at art museum. Loved sneaker exhibit.
Now for naps and later pool time and dinner of their choosing.

It is. Chewy should thank the Social Security administration for my purchases. Do you maintain a cat sanctuary or did you just fail to listen to all those people who said, "You need to save and invest now or you will be eating cat food in retirement." I run a home for unwed feline mothers and fathers and abandoned street kittens. They have housing in the backyard and garage. And a rare few get brought into the house.

I feed stray cats on the corner across the street. Nobody minds because it's a commercial electrical company and not a private residence. I feed them every two -three days because I don't want to them to forget how to fend for themselves in case something happens to me. Yesterday they got leftover chicken and dry cat food. Tomorrow will be salmon that I didn't eat because I was sick, piri piri chicken, plus dry cat food. I buy big bags of the cheaper dry food. Tenn, who is going to inherit all your cats in case something happens to you?

I may sell my home for $1 to a spay/neuter clinic on the basis someone associated with them lives in the house until the last animal is no longer alive. I don't have to worry about leaving any type of inheritance to anyone.

I'm sitting for a few minutes. CMT has been awesome for background noise, to the point that I forgot the Bruins had a day game today. oops. first up at noon was Dirty Dancing. now it's the original Sister Act, and after this it comes full circle with Ghost. I'll probably loaf til the end of the movie, 40min, and then back at it.

Good for you for just providing help and not judging. I'd guess even the ones who want to get married have difficulty finding local clergy to perform the ceremony once it is discovered they have been out catting around.

And just across the border in Mississippi, some residents of ill repute are eating the cats and dogs. So I am helping to save the species.

I paid off my car loan today. Very happy about this.
I bought a Honda in 2018 with a 5-year loan to replace a well-used 2005 Ford Focus. The Honda was totaled in an accident in January 2021, and I had to buy another car. The Toyota was purchased in January 2021. So, I've had a car note since January 2018.
When I got the new job in June, I stopped maxing out contributions. Partly because I didn't want to go over the limit by mistake with 2 different accounts. Mostly because I wanted to take care of other things for a while. Now I paid off the 0% credit card and the car loan, I'll save for the 2024 IRA. By mid-December I'm back to maxing out. 401K, IRA and HSA.
I cannot explain how happy I am of being rid of car payments.
The Toyota I have is a great car, but I was resentful of the car note because of the circumstances. But now that loan is, like the job from hell and other bad things that happened to me since the pandemic, finally behind me.

Thanks, y'all. I saw some photos from my friend's condo complex, where a tornado touched down the next county north. It's the same tornado that wiped out cars and structures west of us, bounced over us, and hit his place. There was a house literally split in half, sharp metal sheeting everywhere, big trees down. I saw concrete light poles snapped at ground level.

After fixing breakfast I planted the last of the plants before showering, and we stopped at Aldi after lunch for eggs and berries and wine. We'll leave in a little bit for DH's birthday dinner. Tomorrow is the usual cleaning. countrygirl2 You have expressed your worries about your DH being bored with his new life in WA and declining in health due to inactivity so overseas employment might be the answer to that concern and afford you more $$ since you no longer have rental income and much of your assets are tied up in real estate. You have told us many times over the years that he wanted to return to employment, and I wonder if your relocation to WA has opened this window for him. You are no longer living in an isolated rural area, stores and medical resources are just down the road so to speak, and your son and DIL can help you and your daughter if needed. Plus, his overseas employment would relieve you of the burden of fixing a separate meal every night for him as you tell us you must do. I'm sure it will work out for the best.

I started my day having to call AAA to get my dad’s car battery replaced, and ended it with eating popcorn and wine for dinner. In between was busy and chaotic, but overall things are going ok-ish with my family this weekend. Still looking forward to going home Tuesday tho

Good Luck on your college tours. My DD only wanted to go to UW-Whitewater and refused to do any college tours (other than UWW). There are worse things than being dead set on a low-cost in-state option.

We just got back from an early dinner to celebrate DH's 85th birthday. The restaurant was beyond amazing and exceeded our expectations. They celebrate the best of classic American foods with a modern flair and EVERYTHING is made in house. We started with the spinach and artichoke dip with their house-made potato chips (beyond good) and shared a complimentary side of Brussels sprouts roasted in fish sauce which was mind boggling. Then DH had roasted chicken with orzo and arugula salad while I had the vegan plate which was roasted carrots, beets, cauliflower, broccoli, and chickpea fritters on a green pea puree. They provided a complimentary slice of their house-made cheesecake for dessert too. We will be going back frequently

I have one year before college financial aid matters again, so if I'm going to do it, now is the time. The tax hit would suck though.
