We are getting to the time of year we play furnace chicken. It gets warm enough in the day we don't need it but then gets cold enough at night that we may need it but DH doesn't want to turn it on yet.
We'll probably have to next week it's going to potentially get down to freezing at night.

I used to always play the "don't turn on the furnace until I absolutely HAVE to" game. One year, I was super proud of myself, as I'd made it to November before I broke down and the house had dropped to in the 50's before I flipped the switch. And It didn't work.
Might want to at least test it once or twice to make sure it's running.

Good morning Everyone! I don't like being cold. We spend $$ on plenty of things, so if I am cold, I adjust the heat. If my DD is home, I try to keep it a little cooler, but I am not going to be uncomfortable in my own house. Have lots of work to get done today, have conflicting deadlines. I need to run checks, and I need to finish up 3rd Quarter Financial and crank distributions out to the owners today. Then I have another company I am working to get Fiscal Year End stuff to the CPA Firm for. Swamp, I am sorry about your Son's diagnosis, but glad he learned about it while he is in an environment where he can learn coping skills to combat it. With NMD talking about her issues so much, I have come to realize that I probably also have ADD. I am now sorry I did not listen when my kids were in school and said they thought they had ADD. At the time, I thought the only solution was Ritalin. I did not realize that there were other things that could be done to help people control their ADD. Giramomma, I am praying for a good outcome for your biopsy.

It's going to be in the 70s and 80s here. I was thinking that I could pack all my coats and winter clothes up since I won't be needing anything before I move. I need to start packing.

I keep it quite cool. 65 degrees in winter. I've made the call to have the furnace inspected. No call back yet.
I can always turn on the gas fireplace and cuddle up in warm clothes and blankets. I am not paying what it would cost to heat the house to 74 degrees

I turned the heat on before I jumped in the shower. just to 62, but I didn't want to freeze when I got out. the heat is already back off and the side door is open for the pups to come and go. the app on my phone says it is 54 degrees outside now, but it's supposed to warm up more. it's bright and sunny, so that helps.

I don't know when your kids were in school but when my brother was in school in the late 90s/early 00s that is the solution the school tried to shove down my parents throat the entire time. They really did make it sound like they just wanted kids drugged into compliance so I get my parents' reluctance and I get yours too. We've come a long way. There is a lot more options and resources available.

Mine was wasps built a nest in the exhaust pipe over the summer so the emergency shut off kept tripping immediately after it fired up.

One year mine didn't come on and I had it serviced a few months earlier. They tried to charge me for the call because the main switch was off. When it was obvious that I didn't know where the switch was, they admitted it was their mistake.

We have had a few cooler mornings over the past week. DH and I will run the gas logs in the living room to warm up. Ironically I still have the a/c on, but turned up high so it won't kick in. I also need to schedule the furnace inspection.
It may get up to 90 here today. I doubt I will turn on the a/c though. If we shut the house up it remains pretty cool throughout the day.
I hope everyone is doing as okay as they can!

Grandson was so full of energy he was bouncing off the walls tonight, just wow. And I was so tired was not up to it tonight, but hubs handled him. He is taking him to the trampoline place this weekend to play and work some of it off. We are going to look into a swimming place too. His pediatrician suggested some type of marshal arts to help with discipline for himself and activity, we shall see. I think he needs meds for ADHD but DIL won't hear of it. I think its really hurting him on being focused at school. She did get him an HPV shot at the docs but won't let him have a flu or COVID shot. I can only suggest, son would do it but I'm staying out of it. In my opinion doing him a big disservice, he even said he would take meds for ADHD. I am saddened that his parents won't try to protect him from the misery of flu and Covid and, in the case of Covid, the potential long-term damages. I do applaud them, however, for getting him the HPV shot and protecting him and his future partners from one of the most common STD's. Many parents have difficulty accepting that their little ones will rapidly grow up into sexual beings and, in our modern world, are often sexually active at a relatively young age. I hope you will help your DIL remember it's a 2-shot series and the second shot should be given within 6 to 12 months of the first one.

DH tested positive, as expected. His doc said no Paxlovid for him. Something for cough and a nasal spray. He says it is just feels like a minor sinus infection to him. Hope it stays that way.

Our mostly-beloved squirrels decided to dig in one of the planters I filled yesterday . The standard fix is black pepper on the dirt, but my pepper is from Penzey's and costs a bit so I put out a generous dose of Tony Chachere's Cajun Seasoning which has a ton of red and black pepper. I'll see how the little hairy monsters like that!

My kids have been down and out with fevers and coughs for a week - we are off for another doctor visit today to see if they have something that can be treated (they tested negative for strep and covid). There has been a lot of pneumonia around here, so wondering if we are into that now (their lungs were clear on Tuesday).
My 10yo missed her field trip today, so that's a real bummer. I had no idea she'd still be sick today when all this started last Friday.

To be fair to DIL children rarely have a problem with Covid unless there are other health issues. Children do get flu so vaccine is recommended

In 2004, my sister and I moved our parents from Massachusetts to South Carolina to be close to one of my brothers. Mom at this point had full blown Alzheimer's disease. And my dad was not doing a very good job of taking care of her. When we got to SC, my brother booked them in a place for seniors which also offered nursing care. The folks lived in two connecting studio like apartments. It was the month of July. The complex had their building temp set to like 75 degrees. My mom told me to turn up the heat as she was cold. I said how high. Mom said 85 degrees. I laughed to myself. Tough getting older. Today I don't laugh because that is pretty much me. A/C for me is set at 77 degrees during the summer. Very comfortable. 72 degrees is too cold. Turning on the heat right now for over night. Set at 75 degrres. Anything lower is too cold. I guess as one gets older one becomes more sensitive to indoor temps.

62 was a bit too cold downstairs this morning. If I was moving around I might have tried to make it but sitting at a laptop just makes it colder. The house didn't warm up yesterday like it had been. It's been 65 all week in the morning and I've waited on the house to warm up over the day.
I think the heat was kicked on last month one morning because it was just cold and damp.
In regards to furnace chicken, I'm trying to get customer of the quarter with my hvac company apparently. They've been out two months in a row.
Last month some piece on the AC failed on a day the high was 95. The part was covered under warranty and we just paid the service call fee. This month the AC kept throwing the breaker. The inside unit had got wet inside by the high power line and was arcing. The verdict was it had been too wet, too humid and too cool for the AC to run long enough to handle the humidity. It had rained for like 12 days straight. We don't have a dehumidifier downstairs because the basement is dry. They took the panel off the unit and we ran a fan to dry it out.
After I get back from vacation, I'm going to put a humidity monitor down there. I asked my brother about buying a dehumidifier and he said is it going to rain for 2 weeks straight again? Probably not.
In laws have AC set on 78. I wrapped Christmas gifts many years at my grandma's in shorts.

We never turn off the furnace. The temp is set at 60° for night, 65° during the day. It was 44° this morning outside, and I felt warm air blowing out of the vent in the bathroom when I got up.
I think today I’m going to go get shot up. I’ll hit the local pharmacy for their vaccination hours. I need flu, Covid and pneumonia vaccine now. Hopefully they can do all the jabs at the same time. The Covid vaccine tends to knock me out, so don’t really have plans for tomorrow.
Jusy a little ticked off. M6 doctor prescribed some new allergy meds….and most importantly, eye drops. Express Scripts decided that since my insurance doesn’t cover the eye drops, that they could cancel it. They didn’t give me the opportunity to pay OOP. That pisses me off not a little.

It surprises me how much difference there is, having people on all sides of you and above/below you.

fly by meeting in my very near future: DS2 will be in the Bay Area for business but he will arrive such that we can have an (early) dinner. Always a super treat. While I talk/zoom with my "kids" at least weekly, an in person visit is a big treat.

I have a space heater I run in the bathroom when I shower. Otherwise it is too cold to shower. I don't need to heat the entire house to take a shower.
Mom was always too hot. She always had a fan pointed at her. Right until her last breath, we left the fan on her.
The next day dad asked to have the heat turned to 80 and there it stayed.

I have never realized how fragile the supply of medical supplies really is. I just read an article about an IV fluid shortage. Hurricane Helene damaged one supplier and now there is a nationwide shortage of IV fluids as there are only a few plants that produce these. Hospitals are scrambling to preserve what they can get and the FDA has allowed temporary import of these fluids from Canada, Europe, and China. They hope everything will be back to normal by the end of the year.
I had flashbacks to the baby formula shortage from a while back and I wonder how many other critically needed supplies are produced with such a narrow (production) margin. Scary thought...
