Our mail yesterday was all Republican Campaign Stuff. DH took an unidentified caller call on his phone last night and it was the Democrats asking for $500.00. I guess they believe in asking for the moon. I said I was thinking about sending another contribution to Tammy Baldwin's senate campaign, but I thought they said Kamala's Campaign funding was pretty Flush? I'm not answering numbers that aren't saved in my phone until after the election. I don't have the patience. I think DH thought it might be a customer. It was close to 9 pm when he took the call. I was surprised he answered.

My GF's Florida house is right in the path. She is not there now, but this is the first big storm she has ever been nervous or worried about. She originally researched where hurricanes were likely to hit before she bought the house many years ago, and has had minor damage in the past. There is someone at her house so she should be able to get first-hand reports, but this may be a tough day.

My sister is directly in the path of Milton. Helene damaged her beach house and probably her house outside of Asheville (don't know for sure because they can't get there because the roads are gone). It did not affect her primary residence, although I think Milton will take care of that. She also cannot evacuate, both she and her husband are doctors and need to be at work. That sucks! I hope she stays safe.

My brother is right in the path again as well. It's an odd area. Everyone around him either closer to the coast on his west, or closer to the bay on his east have evacuation orders, but the small zone around his house does not. \

A man who used to work for me moved to Anna Maria Island last year and he and his wife bought a house on Cortez a few months ago about a block from the beach. It got 4 feet of water from Helene, I'm not sure it will still be standing after Milton. I was at a conference a few years ago and a speaker (I'll edit this post if I remember her name) was talking about retreating from the coast. We need to stop re-building and move inland, allow the barrier islands to return to a state of nature and start acting as barriers once again. I would never say that to someone going through this right now but I do think that living on the Florida coast is becoming/has become unsustainable. ETA: A. R. Siders - environment.harvard.edu/people/ar-siders Editing again: I should have said that first and foremost, I hope your sister and brother-in-law remain safe.

She did not want to be close to the beach because of both possible storm damage and red tide. I just looked it up. She is not currently in an evacuation zone, but it apparently ends at her fence. Hard to not laugh at that a little.

I honored my boundaries today, and walked away from my laptop when the "meeting" reminder popped up to go walk the pups at 1130am. I'd been ignoring that lately, and I no longer GAF unless something is literally on fire. we walked all around the park where finnime had her recent craft fair (the one I couldn't get anywhere near) and up the street a ways. I love the views from this street, it overlooks the beach and bay, and all of the boat slips. when there's no wind, the water is like glass. I also got word while we were out, that I've been selected to move on to the panel interview for Fridays phone screen. it would be on zoom, and the recruiter specifically said "camera on' so i need to answer him after I get off this 90min production call. the camera on my work laptop has never worked, and I haven't messed with it on my tablet. I'd have expected an in-person panel interview, so this is kind of weird. I don't intend to take this position if it's offered, but I would like the interview experience to help freshen up my skills there. Install Zoom on your Surface if you haven't already and start a meeting so you can practice making sure you have proper lighting and the angle looks good. Since we are now hybrid (only come in when I have to), some people can now live outside Philly metro, and we have some positions that are designated primary remote, all our interviews are on Zoom. I'm on an interview panel for a position in my department now and just had a Zoom with someone in NY yesterday. Get a laptop riser off Amazon if you don't have one, that will help keep your tablet at a good level. yup, that's the plan for this weekend. I do have a laptop riser, but it's not that high. I think I'm going to have to play with the tilt angle on the back piece to get it right. when I responded back to the recruiter I said that I had a logistics issue with Zoom, that I'd explained on the phone screen that the camera on my (work-issued) laptop didn't work, but that I had a tablet on the way in order to just keep work and life separate. so they are looking to do the panel interview next week. that's fine, I'm still leaning that I don't want this job anyway. but, I do need to figure this out anyway, so it's okay.

So the other day, I made it to the salon to get my toes done. While that was happening, I watched a guy bring in his 8-9 year old daughter for a manicure. She talked him into letting the manicurist do acrylic nails, the manicurist wanted to just do polish, but the child was having nothing of it. I am quite impressed that the manicurist really tried to talk her out of getting acrylics. She got acrylics.
All I could think of was that he’s going to be gobsmacked when he gets the bill, and her mom is going to be pissed.

ugh, sorry to those of you directly impacted. I've been seeing regular updates from my friends in that area, they are all checking in periodically. if I could remember who posted this, I'd grab the apple link to share here. but apparently there's some update for iPhone 14 and newer, where you can still use your phone even w/o cell signal or wifi. I'll post back if I find it again. ETA - was just scrolling FB and the algorithm gave me the post again. yay! No power or cell service? Life-saving satellite tech available on your iPhone, Android

It's our first cool day since May (cool means 65 this morning with high of 88 this afternoon) so I had an urge to go buy some plants for my empty pots. There wasn't much selection but I got some and a bag of potting soil. I think tomorrow and Friday I'll play in the dirt which will be good for my body and mind.

Yes, I cannot imagine how it feels to have your loved ones directly in the path of Milton. I am very distracted today worrying about the impact. I have a few relatives that will be impacted. Several have damage from Helene. My brother has a property Near Disney in the Orlando area that he rents out via rental apps like Airbnb. Last year they had flooding in the neighborhood, but no damage to the inside of his property.
I agree that we as a nation need to consider encouraging people who have coastal flood damage issues to consider rebuilding farther inland. It is understandable that Insurance companies do not want to risk repeated claims from Hurricanes and fires in areas that are high risk. It is not feasible to expect the rest of the country to cover the risk in a high risk insurance pool. Even in my Mid-west neighborhood nearly every house in my subdivision got a new roof this year from hail damage.

DH is feeling much better. We took a drive today to get out of the house! We live in NW Arkansas, in the Ozarks. Rogers and Bentonville had bad tornado damage from a Memorial Day weekend storm. We drove around up there earlier this summer, so we decided to check on things today. Still lots to do, but they are working through. Thousands of old trees were destroyed. It will take years to recover the tree canopy. Saying this, I can't imagine how horrible it must be in the Helene damaged areas! Milton is just super scary! I'm praying for everyone today and tomorrow. Please do what you can to be safe!
It is still very dry here, so trees are shutting down early. There is some lovely fall color here and there. The weather has been cooler these past few days, but I understand we will be back in the 90's by this weekend.

I don't know what the deal is this year, but I'm finding them in my house almost everyday the past few weeks. They're usually groggy and half dead. I sure hope when they did the siding they didn't leave a gap somewhere that they're coming in. I've never had wasps in the house before.

Just got back from psych appt where bio stood us up, wouldn't give verbal consent and won't reschedule so I get to call hotline again once I get teen settled bc we both know seizure is coming. Teen missed school and I missed work, drive is 45 mins and another 55 back home bc of traffic.
I just don't understand what bio wins by doing this. Calling the hotline takes over an hour and then they come visit us first and screw up our whole night and they go visit her sometime in the next few days since teen is 'safe'.
Dr refused to speak to me, but her intake admin did. I asked if doc would sign off on medical release for oral surgery. She went back and inquired and doc said no bc she's only psych. Okay, well then who signs off? She said what doc diagnosed? I said we were inpatient at this very hospital. She said try to send the forms to general medical release fax. Great so it will sit in lalaland for days when/if someone can ever make bio sign.

Surprisingly we have not had a wasp problem in our yard this year. Mosquitoes have been an absolute nightmare. Can barely go outside or you are covered in quarter size welts. I joked with the doctor that I wouldn't be shocked of my physical numbers came back showing I was anemic after how many bug bites I got in that week alone.

You'll never understand because you are not wired to think or behave that way. She will never be logical or reasonable because in her mind she is never the problem. You would have better luck trying to stop a train with your teeth than trying to get nut to see reason or understand her motives. Unfortunately, with the system being as slow and convoluted as it is this may all end up just being a waiting game until teen is legally an adult. It's messed up. As with elder care I can understand why we don't just rip away parental rights on a dime but JFC there has to be a middle ground somewhere.

Many people should not be allowed to have children and she is one of them. Every single one of her children is going to have mental health issues.

At first I thought they were getting through the screen door to the new deck (that the fighting cats put holes in), but they still were showing up after I let everyone know to make sure they shut the glass door as well. I hope it's just some freak thing and they aren't back next year.

As with elder care I can understand why we don't just rip away parental rights on a dime but JFC there has to be a middle ground somewhere. Teen was silent all the way home and didn't even fuss at me when I said I'm calling hotline to report it again. She just now came back upstairs and said I don't understand her. I told her exactly what you said that at this point, it's not about her, it's about bio asserting control over me. 75 mins later and hotline report is done. This lady seemed to write a scathing note about how the tooth infection will lead to death and how if she falls while having a seizure that could also kill her. Meanwhile she gave me yet another number to call to try to get help. I'll do that first thing tomorrow. I'll also be calling children's hospital to see if they take dental thru ER. I doubt it and would hate to go that route because it puts teen back in jeopardy of being sent home, but my mom noticed that she's actively clutching her jaw this week. I guess I've been too preoccupied and/or she hides it from me. Making that call makes me feel so skeezy bc they ask all kinds of questions about my job, husband, kids, race, drug use, do I run a meth lab, prison record, and on and on and on.

I love the no bugs up here, can't believe it as we are not far from a stream and woods all behind us In Indiana when working in the garden, I had a hat with a net, long sleeves, long pants, the bugs and mosquitoes would eat me alive. I need to look up and see why its this way but I love it.
Not sure what happened this morning got up about 9 and fell asleep in the recliner. I would wake myself up for a few seconds snoring, must have sounded like a freight train. Finally I woke up at 1 this afternoon! I wasted my whole day, now I hope I can sleep tonight. DD said mom you were really, really snoring, LOL!
As far as the coasts of Florida I think that will take care of itself. Insurance I understand is getting so high some people can't afford it. And if hurricanes keep hitting and hitting only the very rich will be able to keep rebuilding. There is another hurricane coming in now and who knows with the ocean having record temperatures may be more. We toyed with buying down there, I'm sure happy we didn't.
It's a nice day out, I'm so happy the sun is shining, hubs thought it would rain all the time. It will rain quite a bit but this is our first winter here. It's 69 out, so nice with long sleeves.
Hubs mowed yesterday, he said took me 30 minutes. It's to be nice this weekend so I'm thinking we are going to trim all the shrubs and rose bushes back.

Bio nut is basically afraid of losing the game so she's taking her basketball and going home. Then she can't lose and no one can win.
It doesn't make sense, but a lot of adults do it.

Huh. My big boss asked me today to consider applying for a senior billing specialist position. Apparently my willingness to learn how to use Excel for reports and to bring up questions about billing situations that according to my boss just can't be made up, makes her think I'd do well. And here I'd been thinking the last couple of weeks that I'm fraud who has no idea what she's doing. Can we tell I have a massive case of imposter syndrome? Guess I'll put in the app tomorrow. Too bad I'm on vacation next week but gives me a chance to read up the Excel for Dummies workbook I got out of the library. And buy a new phone because this one is seriously pissing me off!
