We were supposed to camping this weekend with Miss Grandbaby. Her parents had a wedding to attend. On Wednesday evening, the campground was put on wildfire evacuation notice and on Saturday the area was evacuated. We're only having smoky air in the afternoon, so we've spent the last two mornings outside.
It's been two weeks at my new job. I think it's going well. There are definitely some interesting HR and fiscal stories right now, and I'll tell you about those later.

It's been dark and gloomy here today so I did the only sensible thing and made chicken and dumplings.

So I am kinda stoked to try my hand at making ricotta gnocchi this weekend. When I made lasagna last weekend, I couldn’t remember how much ricotta I needed, so I picked up two 16 oz containers. I looked around online to see how I can use up the extra ricotta. So, I am making brown butter sage ricotta gnocchi, sauteed mushrooms, oven roasted carrots, and coriander crusted salmon. I hope that I can find wild salmon. The flavor is vastly better. Heading to Cheesy's house for leftovers. I did a pork loin and roasted sweet potato (one big potato, which we shared, topped with brown sugar butter).
Supper was really good! IMG_2216 by Fl Cheesehead, on Flickr

We did Thanksgiving in July tonight - turkey, fresh peas, gravy and stuffing.
I also washed my car and got that Saharan dust off.

DH did baked chicken thighs and a Spanish rice mix for supper and after I cleaned up we sat on the deck. It's down to 88 and very dry with a lovely breeze which is amazing for July so we wanted to take advantage of it before heavy rains settle in this coming week.

We had a big family reunion-ish kind of party this afternoon, so I've basically been eating for the past 6 hours. Made the mistake of grabbing a beer a few hours in and can feel a migraine coming on from it, so that's awesome. My aunts and I were going to leave tomorrow for a mini-road trip, but we pushed it out til Tuesday since a lot of family will still be here tomorrow. I'm glad because I could use the extra day to straighten up the laundry pile and pack.

Yesterday was eventful. Stupid firepit had damp wood in it which I didn't see so it lit but not great. Mostly just smoldered a lot. On the plus side, my best friend from hgh school, my twin from another mother, whom I hadn't seen in about 10 years popped into town and surprised me with a visit! Yay!!! She's coming back mid-August with her daughter and staying with me for the weekend. I really can't wait.
On the flip side, tomorrow is the 4 year anniversary of DH and I didn't put in for it off. I'm kind of regretting that right now. I get the feeling I may be calling out tomorrow. I don't think I can handle the day this year for some reason.

I just quit working about an hour and a half ago.
I have stuff stacked on the countertops in the kitchen, I left them out so I can clean the cabinets. The kitchen cabinets are now all clean. I have boxed most of the stuff in there but left some out for us to use. Hard to live here and box it all. We ate odds and ends tonight and I have all kinds of good meat in the freezer. Makes me sad, but I just don't have the time or energy to cook.
I also washed DD's hair this evening and cut and thinned it, looks pretty nice. I also had a mountain of laundry and DD had a problem like me. I feel sorry for her. I washed all the bedding and hubs made her bed up for me, that sure helps. So now I'm going to bathe and call it a night. Hubs packaged paintings all day. Cutting card board to protect them and did a great job.
Spoke to soon, I have to fold all the clothing I washed before my bath. I am never done.

When I was golfing, the huge dragonflys were flying. Nearly a swarm. So beautiful to see. Other super sightings. The turkey mom and pop were beside the road showing off their 12 or more little turkeys. I was so delighted then I saw a bunch of young pheasants. I know they came just to see me!

Ugh, my sister in law is now refusing to go to the 50th anniversary party next week, which means that one of their sons and all of their grandchildren will miss it. She literally had six months to object to us holding it in a catholic church hall, but of course waited until less than a week out with everything scheduled there. DH is going to talk to his brother about it tomorrow and try to talk him into coming and bringing the kids without his wife, but it is unlikely. Will she be smited if she enters a Catholic church?

Will she be smited if she enters a Catholic church? It is one of the two: 1. She can't stand the thought of anything that isn't all about her. AND/OR 2. We are all going to hell for being catholic and she is trying to save her kids from being contaminated by setting foot in the church reception hall. It would have been nice if she had objected back when we were planning things, as we were totally flexile for the location and would have changed it if she had spoken up. It is so irritating because she won't set foot in my house (cat allergy) so we keep changing plans so that our house guests get a chance to see her and the kids. I would really like to just make a nice dinner for my guests instead of carting them all into Hagerstown to see her. Interesting. Whatever her reasoning, it looks like she timed her objection to be late so you couldn't fix it. That she had a ready excuse for not being there at all ... perhaps. I'm curious. Does she have a religion?

Empress it makes perfect sense to me that this year might hit harder. I've started calling the worst of the years of the pandemic, the Covid times. Here in my part of CNJ, I define that as 1st quarter 2020 through the end of 2023, mainly because for me it didn't feel all that normal until the second half of 2023 at best. And now, the usual summer Covid bounce is making some researchers anxious. What I remember from NJ12 news, is eight states are significantly up in Covid case numbers and one of those states is CT. Hard to grieve when it feels like the whole world is breaking around you. I hope you continue to feel more grounded and aware. It must be awful to lose a spouse and losing him when you did made it worse.

Good morning, astute invisipeeps, discerning positive from negative and taking action accordingly. Welcome to Monday. I hope your day goes smoothly and well, setting up a satisfying week. I hope you enjoy fresh corn on the cob or maybe cornbread with chicken and a glass of sangria as befits July. This is yet another quickie. Then I'll go back and read the past 15 pages to catch up. THe show went well enough, could have been better. DH and I were discussing what we could do to attract more sales. We're thinking of offering fewer prints in a variety of sizes which a prospective customer could then, if they like, choose a frame for, or not, just buying the print. This is one print that I sold. The person who bought it was very pleased. I had had it printed on high-texture paper to even further soften the image.

Parent of a teenager post. My wife son and I are in Beijing at the moment. Several days ago, my wife let me know that she wanted to go to a Chinese traditional medicine clinic for a skin condition. So I planned on meeting my wife and son at the clinic after her medical consultation. The clinic is a 30 minute walk from our home base. Before you can get an appointment at the clinic, you will need to get there before 9am and get a number then wait in line for your consultation with a traditional Chinese medical doctor. My wife then called to let me know that she had an 11:30 am consultation with a doctor on the clinic's 4th floor. I then told her that we will go to a local hot pot restaurant after her visit for lunch. I left early and arrived on the fourth floor of the clinic at 11 am. I sat down on a bench in the hallway and waited. After several minutes, I decided to pull out my phone and turning on cellular mode to call my wife, as I was in the process of making the call, I glanced up and my 15 year old son was standing in front of me and we exchanged hellos. I then started to put my phone away and my son was no longer in sight. I did not know where he went, perhaps to a room on the same floor and I did not want to start opening doors so I just stayed in place. After around 5 minutes, my son came back down the hallway and told me that they were waiting for me downstairs on the first floor. We made our way to the first floor to meet my wife and she was a little mad. She told me that she had an early appointment with the doctor and after her appointment my son and her went to go get breakfast after returning to the clinic, she instructed my son to go to the fourth floor to see if I was there. When he returned to the first floor, my wife asked him if he saw me and he told her that he did see me on the 4th floor. My wife then asked him where I was and he told her that I was still upstairs. She then asked him if he told me to come downstairs and he said no. You told me to see if dad was upstairs and he was, then I came down to tell you dad was upstairs. My wife then told him to get upstairs to tell me that she is waiting for me on the 1st floor. For as long as I live, I will never forget this funny time in life. I told my wife that it was a good thing that she did not send him to the airport to see if I was in the reception entry area.

I hate everything today.
My mother fell in the bathroom and has a broken hip, otherwise stable. My brother in Europe raised the alarm last night and the police had to break in for the very necessary welfare check. She’s stable in hospital, YB now wants to go for guardianship and I’m not sure how to feel about that.
OB was already flying over late this week to stay maybe a month so at least medium term care needs should be covered. I might need to fly out to cover the interim.
My subcontractor is misbehaving themselves pretty mildly and coworker is being an asshole, again, after first being an asshole on Friday.
I want to go back to bed.

My best friend’s other friend called me about an hour ago. I knew it was bad when I saw her name on my phone, calling me in the morning, and I was afraid to answer.
My friend P’s husband died early yesterday morning. They were in Alabama celebrating something with his family. Had a great time Saturday and Saturday night. In the middle of the night she woke up to him making gurgling noises, then he was gone. They’ve been together 15 years. He was a fun, outgoing guy, and he loved him some P.
This is my same friend whose 14yo Grandson died suddenly in Nov of 22, and her Mom died in 2020.
I am sitting at the table in my breakfast nook crying into my coffee.
