Did I say I hate people yet? Why did someone just tell me that one of their drivers doesn't have a driver's license? She said the guy has a South African license and he has an appointment to get a US license next month. Why are you letting the dude drive your trucks?! Am I getting punked?!

So I’m on board of a charity trying to build affordable housing for low income deaf and DeafBlind seniors. The management of the state s hill for the deaf offered a vacant dormitory. We have a company with experience building supportive housing that can get grants to completely renovate the building. Since it’s owned by the state we get the ‘opportunity’ to see our taxes at work. What a waste of time, terrible aggravation dealing with these lazy incompetent people. Took almost two years but finally passed by state treasurer and attorney general office. Then it’s back at the department of education. The pompous person who is the head finally agreed to have a teleconference with us. Not easy cause we need to get ASL interpreters and communication is slow. Anyway this person said she had ‘concerns’ but wouldn’t be specific. Finally 2 months and numerous emails, phone calls she wrote us a one page email about ‘ concerns’ I wrote her a sarcastic thank you and we will have a response in a week. Cause time is passing and it’s heartbreaking that we can’t help these needy people I hate government and politicians

Sitting in my home which still has no electricity/air conditioning. Heat index outside over 100 degrees.
The throwing out of no longer frozen in the freezer and spoiled in the fridge begins. No way to cook it.
Second time in seventeen months I have had to throw away refrigerated food due to power failures in Memphis. Last time I was without power for seven days due to an ice storm in February, 2022. I should bill the utility company for thrown away food.

Thanks for asking. Had another immunotherapy treatment today. The oncologist is very pleased for results of the PET scan. Tumor is much smaller. YAY!! I need to make appointment with surgeon, he’ll decide if I should have surgery or more treatments first. ODS knows surgeon and said he’s very good. I’m blessed to be able to have much milder immunotherapy and it’s effective and a lovely oncologist , and son who also treats cancer patients and a supportive family and a lovely housekeeper!!! That is great news and I can now un-cross all my fingers, toes, etc. for a little while. Let us know when you'll have an appointment with the surgeon please. I may not be much at prayer but I am very good at crossing all my appendages and sending good juju - for whatever that is worth...

One of my friends is always after me to get a cellphone. "Get with the program! Be a part of this century!" I can't imagine why I'd need a cellphone. I don't have a SO who needs to text me constantly. I don't have little kids in school or at camp. I'm usually home, so anyone can just reach me here on my landline. Is it so I'll have something to do on the bus or the subway, like all the other people who have their noses stuck in their phones and are completely unaware of anything going on around them? Is it to make selfies that I'll never look at again? Besides, cellphone plans are insanely expensive here. I got my first cellphone back in the 90's when I began commuting 100 miles a day on the freeway and had to have a way to call for help in case of breakdown or to notify DH if I was going to be late due to traffic. I upgraded to a smartphone back in 2013 when I began my volunteer work as it was essential for communications. We finally upgraded the alarm system to cellular and got rid of the landline last year. By then the landline had gone up to $128 per month. I don't know how anyone could travel now without a phone because all the airline schedule changes, notifications on a cruise, hotel confirmations etc. come via text. If you are waitlisted at a restaurant or a salon, they use texts to alert you when they have availability. My doctor just sent me a text to confirm my appointment next week. I got mine in 1998 when I had T1 so I could be reachable at any time if something happened to her while I was at work or something.

DS and his friends may have found a place to rent. Which, his housing costs should be pretty affordable, then. He just needs to get more income. He is just way too comfortable at home. Let's just say, last night, I got an eyeful of things I never, ever want to see. Not on purpose, and he was in his room. But still.
Our conversation today ended with "I know you'll find more income. Perhaps a sugar mama?" To which DS replied "Been trying since I was 14 ma."

Last time I was without power for seven days due to an ice storm in February, 2022. I should bill the utility company for thrown away food. UGH! I am asking you this, because I know you lived in other places before you settled in Memphis, do you have any thoughts about why this is happening so frequently lately? I have lived in Memphis and the surrounding area my whole life, and I don’t remember this being an issue for most of my life. The first time I remember widespread power outages for days and weeks being a problem was during the ice storm in the ‘90’s. That one was understandable Imo. I lived in the hood at the time, and I didn’t lose power, so I was providing food and a place to bathe and rest for my friends and family that didn’t have power for days. Then, Hurricane Elvis in what, 2003? The first time I heard of “straight line winds”. My children and I were on vacation on the Gulf of Mexico when it happened. My Aunt, her daughter, and grandson had gone with us, and we got the call from my Uncle that the storm had tore the back of my Aunt’s house off, so we cut everything short and drove through that horrible weather, trying to get back home. My cousin and I didn’t know if our houses had been damaged too. Mine wasn’t, but I didn’t have power for almost a week. And it seems like eventually, it became almost “normal” around here to lose power for days and weeks after storms. Maybe 6 or7 years ago, one summer, Mister and I both lost power at our homes for over a week. Our homes were about 30 minutes apart. It started off with me treating it like an adventure the first day cooking us breakfast on my charcoal grill. Then when stuff started melting in my freezer, I cooked it too on the grill and gave away what I could, and tried to keep the rest cool on ice in coolers. Then we gave up and pretty much just wandered around, for a few days, literally carrying essentials with us in backpacks, trying to find restaurants that were open so we could eat, and figure out our next move for the moment, because power was out all over the area, and by then all the food I’d had, was spoiled. Then we moved here, in 2019. Yayyyy, all the lines coming to our house are buried, so we shouldn’t have those issues anymore. Except, we started having short power outages that lasted at most 20 or 30 minutes, and now it’s happening more often and for longer amounts of time. I have lived in the area my whole life, and none of this has ever been a thing until recently. And I am very curious about why it’s become a recurring, worsening problem in recent years. Burying the lines must not be the answer people have been yelling it was, since we’ve started losing power too, now. What do YOU think is really going on?

Just saying Hi, it has been awhile although I am guilty of reading. Over all things are going well, same job, oldest is going to be a senior and youngest is going into 7th. My ex is still in the basement, and things are going well with the guy I started seeing in January. Aunt moved to upper MI, so this summer was a week visiting her, a week in New Orleans with my cousin, and a week at the outer banks with my girls, and the guy I am seeing with 2 of his kids. Work starts again on July 31.

He somehow spread ice shards all over the kitchen floor, which melted and made a mess. Fortunately for him, I planned to clean the kitchen and mop the floor. Had I otherwise needed to mop the floor, we would definitely have needed the freezer.

I wish. After I typed the message, it dawned on my to ask my neighbor across the cove if she could use the more expensive stuff thawing out in the freezer. The houses on the other side of the cove got their power back around noon today. Neighbor took the food and she is going to have a cookout Saturday using the given to her food. So I do get to eat it in the end. Yea!!!

One thing, many years ago, that encouraged me to get my own cell phone was when my car broke down in a residential area, and after knocking on a few doors trying to get someone to make a call for me (no one answered), I had to walk blocks before I could get any help. I also think it's a good security thing to own, as there are no longer any pay phones on the streets here. In case of a medical emergency away from home, how would you get help? I own a cellphone and I keep it active for $10 a month. No internet on it. That's for emergencies, although I usually leave it at home because it's heavy. I didn't have it on me when I passed out in the street. A crowd gathered around around me. One lady went through my purse and called my son. Another called an ambulance. Another put her sweater under my head. One stayed with me until DS showed up and everything was resolved. No worries about a health emergency. A lot of places here you would die on the street before would help. Not all. I would help, but DH says I put us in harms way because you don't know what people would try to do. Sadly here some people fake emergencies so that the people helping are distracting, which makes them easy targets for criminals.

Pink a part of electrical outages is the ‘electric grid’ isn’t great and moving to more solar and wind may be contributing to problems. Coal, oil , nuclear and natural gas power plants produce electricity continually except when plants are shut down for maintenance. Electricity from solar and wind are intermittent and need backups of other sources. Batteries are still not ideal for storage. But of course certainly the coal but also oil and nuclear plants are being shut down. Natural gas still going. So more dependence on solar and wind and fewer other sources leads to - outages

We are used to issues with electricity and just a small generator has saved us thousands in the last 5 years. But we have 2 freezers and 2 fridges full of food, so the investment (I think the generator was around $800) has been worth it. With the kids now moving out, we will downsize.

I can't think of any that were more than 1 day.

Did my second donation. This one went much better and only took a half hour.
I must have been sicker than I thought last Sunday. Plus this time I hydrated better and was dressed warmer. It's freezing in there.
If I keep doing it for awhile I can get a decent chunk of change and I'm giving back.
I want to get another tattoo though which means I have to wait four months after. So I'm thinking keep donating through to December. Get the tattoo for my birthday then start again in the new year.
It feels good to do something. I feel less helpless from a medical standpoint.

DH and I have used our cell phones several times to report people down. You never know if it's drugs or something else like cardiac arrest, but we do report when we see it. No, we would not personally attend to the person down for all the reasons stated above.

Oh, you can't get $20 a line here. Anyway, that's for a family using the same cellphone plan, right? It's cheaper that way. I am single. I found a plan for about $30 (before taxes), but you can't make phone calls on it. Huh? Isn't it a cellPHONE plan? I's OK. I'm good.

Sadly here some people fake emergencies so that the people helping are distracting, which makes them easy targets for criminals. I have a relative several years older than me, that started having some kind of nerve issues that I don’t know the proper name for, back in around 2005. Several years ago, her issues started causing her to randomly fall. She fell outside of a Subway, and people walked past her like she wasn’t even laying there helpless. She laid there until she could finally crawl to her car and climb inside. It still upsets my nerves to think that people just walked past her without trying to help her. It was a public place, with other businesses adjacent to the Subway, and plenty of people coming and going, and it was broad daylight. Not exactly a good scenario for a setup where someone appears to need help, for nefarious purposes. I can’t imagine just walking past someone in those circumstances and not trying to see if they needed my help. When I was around 18yo, I was riding in my raggedy ass car, with the weird ass Alaskan Malamute that we had taken in. It was like 200° outside, and I saw a nicely dressed woman walking down the street in an area near my home that was just businesses, like industrial parks. The closest store was at least a mile away. I pulled over and asked if she needed a ride. I guess she weighed her options since I had a big ass dog in my car, but probably since it was so damn hot and she was in the middle of nowhere, she said yes, and got in my car. It turned out that she’d just left a job interview and her BF or whoever hadn’t showed up to pick her up when he was supposed to, so she’d just started walking, trying to get to somewhere she could call him. That was before cell phones were common, neither of us had one. But I drove her to a store that had a pay phone, where there were other stores and public places around, and she insisted she was okay from there, and I left. If we exchanged names, I don’t remember hers, but I remember the incident. That is not the only time I’ve offered a woman that appeared to be in distress, a ride. The last time was maybe 5 years ago, when a young lady was on a mall parking lot and jumped out of a car, arguing and cussing at the the man driving the car. She had a little girl with her. After he drove off, I asked her is she needed a ride, she said yes, and I drove her and her baby girl to where her car was parked. I am way more wary these days, but I still can’t imagine just ignoring somebody in the circumstances my relative was in.

I found a plan for about $30 (before taxes), but you can't make phone calls on it. Huh? Isn't it a cellPHONE plan? I's OK. I'm good. No, it's not a family plan...well..not really. It's $10/line for unlimited talk and text and then all three lines share data at $5/Gb, but you can do just one line at that $10 rate too. If you didn't use any data your total bill for one line would be like $13/month once the taxes and fees were added on.
Problem is, we're starting to regularly use 15 Gb or so of data a month.
