I was just reading about the heat related deaths in Texas. I also read that there is a bill that could eliminate local laws that require water breaks for construction workers. I could not imagine. linkYou are correct. The Texas legislature has removed the ability of Texas cities and counties to require water breaks. They feel human lives are less important than business profits That's just utterly horrific. No further commentary. Ugh.

Dinner last night was a pretty good attempt at a pasta dish I've been thinking about for years since Amis closed. I didn't do a great job at halving the recipe, so it was a bit almond heavy but still creamy and delicious. I guess I have to try, try again to perfect it! www.phillymag.com/foobooz/2017/09/12/eat-this-now-amis-bucatini-jalapeno-almond-restaurants-philly/Yesterday's productivity also included booking some excursions while we're on vacation (in three weeks!!!!!). We're going to do a sunset sail on our favorite catamaran, a snorkel and sunset cruise trip, and a kayak and snorkel trip. We may just wait until we're in Aruba to figure out another activity since we're staying at Eagle Beach instead of Palm Beach this time and I'd like to check that area out more; I'd like to see about a tour or get a taxi driver's card so we can finally hike up Hooiberg, since we never bother renting a car (the cab and bus service is good for us). We definitely want to go back to the butterfly farm for Wednesday morning meditation; we did that our last trip and it happened to fall on my 40th birthday. It was magical.

Once my DSis was on Medicaid, there wasn’t any paperwork. It did take lots and about 2 years to get her on Medicaid. She was disabled since birth and only received small amount of SS but a lawyer messed up her Special Needs trust which caused many problems
She had both Medicare and Medicaid. I was also her designated representative for SS as she wasn’t able to comprehend or manage money. For designated rep I just had to fill in one form a year. Basically just what had been done with her SS over the year- food, medical, etc etc I did have lots of paperwork for Medicare program that paid a caretaker about 30 hrs/week for her. Also for SNAP food stamps, gas & electric assistance. Property tax. But not for Medicaid once she was on it. Actually it paid with no problem. However she also had Medicare. Many doctors won’t take Medicaid patients cause it pays so little they’re losing money. Some will take for example only foster kids, handicapped but not just low income
For people that can’t manage SS there are volunteers who do this ( think I remember TheOtherMe was a volunteer) . Social workers also help for the many programs that exist to help people but require applications, yearly updates etc

woo hoo! the HS kids that mowed my lawn last summer are all back again this year. today's their first day here. the fenced-off garden I haven't planted was completely overgrown, my dad didn't cut that the one time he fired up my lawnmower a few weeks ago. and he also didn't touch the hill between the driveway turnout and the road. the kids are hitting both areas. not that I couldn't see where the weeds have been a problem, but now I won't be distracted by the overgrowth. we had been sitting outside when they pulled up. I threw LD in the house and shut the door, Punk got to meet the trio today. I've been trying to do that more when I can, b/c Punk would absolutely be one of those "UPS Dogs" photos if LD wasn't ready to eat the drivers.

I would assume at some point, we'll see more non-documented workers again. Actually, I'm surprised that we haven't seen more in the areas where they traditionally work/are relied on (farming, hospitality, construction). Maybe folks are worried about the upcoming election.

Every one of you in a wildfire smoke contaminated area, or in a dangerous heat zone, stay indoors! We need you.
The state of Texas overruling local laws protecting the right to a water break, I just cannot comprehend. My poor little mind doesn't twist that far.

I've been trying to recalculate income and cash flow. DH's XW has just now started on collecting a piece of his annuity (pension), a function of their divorce settlement. She gets $980, a fairly big hit. Plus DD is going to be moving in with us temporarily. We need to get her into her own place asap. Her only real income is SSDI, so not much. We cannot support her. We can help and had been planning on it, but the loss of the money to DH's X is a real hurt. When they divorced all the early retirement on disability was years away. Aargh.
DH and I have been together for 20 years now; married for 18. We've worked through some things, but it's tough.
I know DD will need to get a job of some type. And I should beef up my freelance income, asap. Got to figure this out.

Just kicked the thermostat up a degree and set up the two box fans to help with air movement. Our house is not a newer construction/open floor plan so putting a fan in the hallway always helps.
The power company pushed a rate increase through. I don't remember exactly when.....less than 6 months though. I do expect, and budget, for large power bills in the summer. The thing is, the bill that just ended 3 days ago was a smidge over $300. Bill was higher sooner this year. I was expecting closer to $225 - $250. While we can afford the bill and still be comfortable, I'm also still a little shell shocked from my Tuesday morning grocery run. The large container of plain liquid coffee creamer I use was $7.49. I just stood there staring at it in disbelief. I almost didn't get it because the price was so ridiculous.
While the fans and single degree increase on the thermostat probably won't amount to much, psychologically I feel like I at least tried to curb some of the price increases.

Just curiosity here, and this may have been answered before, but I some posters speak of having to fill out lots and lots of paperwork for their relative's Medicaid reporting. What happens if there isn't a person capable to doing that? Does an agency appoint a volunteer or paid staffer to complete the forms? There's got to be many folks without a computer-literate, English-speaking, financially savvy relative to take care of this. NomoreDramaQ1015 Will you have to do all that reporting too when your grandmother goes off self-pay? I hope not. That's how I ended up being a volunteer rep payee. At the agency where I volunteered, if a volunteer did it, it was free to the client. I had a lot of clients who didn't fit their criteria for having a payee. One was the sister of a woman who had been on the board of directors when the agency started and had made huge donations. She had early stage Ahlzheimer's and wanted someone else to be in charge of her sister's money. Her sister was the first patient in the nursing home where she lived. She lived there 33 years before she died. Nursing homes here are doing it once patients go on Medicaid. At that point it's very easy. In Iowa, they get to keep $50 a month. The rest goes to the nursing home and health insurance. For that the record keeping is easy. For someone like my client who was schizophrenic, the record keeping is a time consuming job.

Easy you go down to Mexico, recruit a bunch of people, fake the paperwork and put them to work. You know they are illegal and helped with the paperwork so you hold that over their heads to keep them from protesting unsafe work conditions such as not being allowed water breaks. When you are busted make a lot of noises, fire the current staff, wait a few months then go recruit a fresh batch. It's how the meat packing plants operate.

Nursing home bills Medicaid directly which makes my life a hell of a lot easier. IF there was anything left at time of death Medicaid will siphon the remainder out of the account. They can try to bill the estate but if there isn't shit left then Iowa has to eat whatever remaining balance there is.

Bloodwork showed I have hypothyroidism. Been referred to an endocrinologist Nurse said blood will be tested every 4 weeks until THS is in normal range through medication.
That explains the exhaustion and muscle weakness.
Now to discuss the blood clots and find out what to do about those.

And, let's face it. We live in a world that only values white people.
Of course, it's always been like that. Folks who didn't have progressive views just went underground until it was safe to come back to the surface. We think we've made progress. We haven't. That's what we tell ourselves to try to make ourselves feel better.

It's going to be 102 today, but it's the first day in a while we haven't had a heat advisory or an excessive heat warning. I will take that as a win. I was just reading about the heat related deaths in Texas. I also read that there is a bill that could eliminate local laws that require water breaks for construction workers. I could not imagine. linkI thought it already passed. Greg Abbott is a POS and needs to be voted out.

They can try to bill the estate but if there isn't shit left then Iowa has to eat whatever remaining balance there is. When my nursing home clients died, I had to wait until I got the humongous bill from the state. Then I could pay the usually less than $500 to the state and close the bank account. The $ limit was $2000 when I did it but these people had no money. There was usually around $500 in the accounts after the nursing home was paid. Health insurance was usually deducted before the money went in to the account. My schizophrenic client lived in the community because Iowa doesn't care to provide housing for people with mental health problems. So she had rent, food, etc. to deal with. She had to give me receipts every month for the money she spent. I paid the rent so I knew it got paid.

I must have been giving out terrible vibes the night before the blood test as neither cat would sleep with me. They know, but I could have used the comfort.

With all of this talk about not having to take care of aunts, I am glad that I have talked to my niece and three nephews and they have all agreed to certain roles when it comes to that point. It's all in writing, drawn up by an attorney. I took each one out to eat for the discussions and they all agreed. They will most likely be dealing with their parents' issues at the same time. I saw this aunt/uncle stuff in my family so I had talks with them at least 10 years ago. I hope I don't turn into a cantankerous old woman who fights them at every step.

This. T2 and I were talking about this one day. I told her that this is why you'll never see an American flag at my house. To me, the American flag is just as racist as a confederate flag. I'm not really proud to be an American at this point.

Why when I accidentally brew tea too strong and take a sip I end up making a sound like a dying cat? That was freaking BITTER.

Sadly, many of our construction workers are non-documented immigrants who have few options. They work, they die, they are easily and cheaply replaced. But I thought building a wall was so damn important? Texas' construction industry (and many others including restaurant) are built on the backs of immigrants. The same companies that avidly hire them also support the right-wing folks in Austin talking about stopping them. Hypocrisy is not a factor at all

I think I am cursed up here. I woke up looking like a squirrel this morning. My cheeks and lips are swollen. Only guess I have is the supha drugs. I went to bed at 12 and the only thing I do then was the antibiotic, I have 2 days left, but not doing that. My throat is a little swollen but not bad, so not taking a chance. Not the first time this has happened. I also ate an apple yesterday evening and just rinsed it off, need to make sure I wash them off instead.
I drove up to the drug store and bought benadryl, just took one tablet, likely will put me to sleep. If one doesn't help will take another later. It could even be detergents on the sheets. I have to check what hubs used. I'm not hurting just rather uncomfortable.
I went over to see DIL and little guy yesterday afternoon. She was going to get her nails done today and taking little guy to play with the ladies daughter. They get along pretty well. But he wanted to come over and said mom you could pick me up, she said remember grandma doesn't have Utube anymore and that was when he said she could pick him up this morning.
I'm not going to read anything into it, but if she keeps doing that, not much point coming up. I know she often doesn't give much thought to things she does so will just assume that.
