Speaking of critters. BIG ASS snake on my walking trail last night when I was mowing! I've only seen 2 snakes (besides grass snakes) since moving here 24 years ago and this one was so big. I was going along mowing my trail and saw what I thought was a baby deer or a human arm or leg (seriously thought it was a body for a split second), until I realized it was part of a snake draped over the trail. It brought it's head around for a bit and I'm PRETTY sure it was a bull snake and not a rattler, but I didn't have enough time to process. I was afraid to move in case it was a rattler so just sat still and waited for it to leave on it's own. I know they can strike the length of their body distance away and my leg was maybe 2 feet away from what had to be a 6 foot long snake.
I'm not afraid of snakes, but stumbling basically on top of one that I'm not sure is venomous or not was unpleasant.
I'm with Indiana Jones. I know they're beneficial, but I hate snakes. And, my encounters with them have been scary. At the first house DH & I owned, there was a large garter snake that decided our garage was "his" garage. He would try & bite anyone who accidentally got near him. After DH relocated him out of our garage a couple of times, he made the mistake of trying to bite DH inside of the garage, so DH had to kill it. I'd never dealt with an angry snake until then, and hope I never do again. Living in FL also added to my fear of snakes, especially when a poisonous one tried to bite my neighbor. (The snake lost that battle.)

If my kid is going to be home sick he should BE SICK. This yelling and screaming at the computer playing video games (last night until after I went to bed at midnight) does not make me feel too sorry for him or think he should be staying home with me serving him. If he can do that he can go to work. Agreed. If you're too sick to go to school, or work, you're too sick to play video games. I can hear my mom saying that, still (only we didn't have video games, back then). And I said the same thing to my kids. Yeah, but Covid cheats. When DGS1 kindly passed his Covid along to me in January the worst of my symptoms was that I slept for most of the first day a d I slept more than average for the rest of the week. And it started out with waking up feeling like I had just had my Covid shot a few hours before but that is it. At the time we still did the 5 day isolation to keep others from getting sick and if I had been restricted to basically staring at walls during that time I would have gone stark raving mad. Just saying...Covid cheats.

Just saying...Covid cheats. Yep. I’d second this. My experience with Covid was that I felt punk for 24 hours, but rules required that I be isolated 5 days. I had 4 days of severe cabin fever, far worse than the 24 hours of punk! It didn’t help that the last day we were in Monaco and I could sit on the balcony and see all the places I couldn’t go to. It was almost easier in Rome, when we docked at an industrial pier.

But we don't have the 5 days of isolation anymore here. It's treated like any other illness...including the anything over 3 days has to have a doctors's note. IMO if he's good enough to be hootin and hollerin at the computer from 5pm when I get home until after midnight when I'm trying to sleep he's probably good enough to sit at a computer at work for 8 hours too.
At the very least, go to bed at a normal time assuming you're going to be well the next morning instead of staying up all night assuming you're not.

Did help from other countries put a dent in what is still burning? Not really. Some fires are contained, but not put out. Everyone is exhausted. Some communities had to be evacuated more than once. It looked like the fire was out, but then started again.

I don't think people in my unit are working. Our vacation is tied to the fiscal year, and we had a good amount of floating holiday hours. Which, you use or lose by the end of the fiscal year.

If he can do that he can go to work. Agree on the video game part. He shouldn't be expected to go to work until his quarantine days are up though. If someone got it from him, they may not be so lucky to not get really sick or die.

January 1st they were eliminated. He's getting unpaid time off up to 3 days, then they are unexcused unless he gets a doctors note saying he's too sick to come in...which he is not.

Last night a good friend who works tirelessly in the non-profit sector shared an email she received from someone angry that their application for their kiddo to participate in a summer program was rejected. Bear in mind, there were 29 available slots and they received over 170 applications. Submission deadline was May 31, the program is restricted to low-income residents of this county, and applications must be signed by a custodial parent. The applicant claimed her application (received on June 19) was denied because she is Hispanic and a lesbian. Hmmm, no info on ethnicity or sexual orientation is requested on the form. She says she doesn't have one single scrap of paper showing her address (utility bill, drivers license, apt. lease, EBT benefit statement) or her income. And she doesn't have a birth certificate for the child, nor any knowledge of the father's location. But she's gonna get a lawyer to sue by God, 'cause she's sure she's being discriminated against I usually just let those people wear themselves out and move on. Nothing ever really comes out of it other than they Karen for a little bit and then move on.

I assume you mean that your employer doesn't pay for the isolation days anymore because the CDC still recommends quarantine time. That's pretty shitty of the employer. It still doesn't change the fact that he's contagious and someone could die from exposure to him. It's the decent thing to do to quarantine in an effort to limit the exposure to others.

This is what the CDC says.
It has been 5 days since symptoms began and I don't think he has had a fever at all (although AFAIK he only temped himself on Saturday and Sunday). He didn't test until Sunday morning but he was getting a sore throat/cough Thursday night before we left. He was also packed like sardines in a shuttle/plane/van with up to 13 family members all day Friday and nobody else got sick and would wear a mask to work.

Consider how you and he would feel if he gave it to someone at work who gives it to someone to someone with an immune disorder or is elderly and they died. That's on him. He needs to go to the doctor and get the doctor's note for the 5 day isolation.

We thought the salt and pepper grinders on the ship were attractive and functional. Guess what Amazon shipped today The salt air might have affected DH's brain. He's actually doing stuff without repeated prodding. So far, on his own, he re-scheduled his dental appointment and got an appointment TOMORROW for an eye exam. I offered to set him up with a mammo to but he declined. He tried to give me that "you never had a prostate exam" crap and I pointed out I'd been internally examined since I was 14 so he could stuff it.

How is your air quality, minnesotapaintlady? Ours turned quickly to bad around lunchtime today. Yes, the smoke from the wildfires in Canada is back today, "bigly". After such a long Winter, I'm not happy that I'm spending so much time indoors during what should be the best time of the year.

I'm also making pasta tonight, definitely comfort food. chicken broccoli alfredo, with farfalle. I'm going to roast a broccoli crown, and there's chicken marinating in the last packet of my favorite Weber marinade. end of an era right there, it's been discontinued.

I'll be okay haha

Covid is when I really loosened my sick day rules because any symptom and the kids had to stay home until the test came back negative even when they were 100% not sick. Ds missed 20 days of school the first half of 6th grade not because he was ever very ill and I allowed screen time on those days but he mostly did school work from home anyway.

I have a council meeting tonight so I just roasted a piece of salmon and some red skin potatoes. Tomorrow I'm putting in a little more dinner effort and making bucatini with jalapeno almond pesto. It's a favorite from the late, great Amis in Philly and I've been thinking about it over the weekend.

We save the ingredients list on stuff like that and try to replicate. It has led to some very tasty concoctions. We started when we couldn't find the "limited edition" Old Bay hot sauce a couple of years ago. We've done that with some sauces from a local food truck that we love.
