I’m going to bed early and I know I’ll pay the price of waking up at 2 am but I don’t want to watch black and white westerns with DH. My beloved neighbors from El Salvador are playing music next door and I can drift off to my happy sounds

Well, I got a few things crossed off the travel prep checklist. First of which was making a prep checklist! ODS needed a suitcase and I figured I'd better get a new one too because I've been getting lucky all my past trips that the airlines didn't check the size as it's several inches too big for a carry on. So, bought two carry-ons, a puffer jacket for ODS as the one he took last time is now Carrot-sized and new socks and underwear for everyone (so I can pre-pack them). Only big purchases left are new shoes and I need something dressy . ODS probably does too, but I'm taking him shopping next week for work clothes anyhow so we'll figure that out then. It wasn't a super productive day though outside of the shopping trip. Hopefully tomorrow is better.

Random tangent….. Over 20 years ago, my first cousin married a man that was from New Orleans. When his Mom, Miss Jessee, would come to visit, they would host gatherings because Miss Jessee would bring everything she needed with her to cook New Orleans style food. That is when I first started loving how people from New Orleans talked, and appreciating their food. I loved his Mom’s accent and the way she phrased things so differently from what I was use to, including asking a question and answering it herself. Like she would say “You’re going to make groceries today, yes?” “Make groceries” meant go to the grocery store. And she said all our names with her accent and added “bebby” (baby) on it, as a term of endearment. To this day, I sometimes add “bebby” to my cousin’s name when I talk to her. She told us they don’t cook gumbo in the summer, because it will “sporil” (spoil). I guess maybe that was tradition from years ago, before a/c and such was common. One day they had us over for a gathering and she had a huge pot of gumbo simmering. My cousin’s son walked past the pot and said “UGH! Somebody STANKS!” lol. It was the gumbo he was smelling. Everybody raved over the gumbo, but I didn’t eat any, because like my little cousin said, it stinks lol. Everything I ever ate that she cooked though, was deeeeelicious! She is the reason I fell in love with red beans and rice, and all these years later, I’ve still not had any as good as hers Just a trip down memory lane with good memories of family and good food. Miss Jessee sounds like a wonderful woman and great cook. Yesterday at a group lunch, I said I was cooking gumbo tonight and the woman next to me (60-ish, paralegal, Louisiana born) whipped her head around and said "you're making gumbo in the summer?" A bit ago I joined a Cajun and Creole cooking FB group and learned that there as many versions of gumbo as cooks and the question of how to make a roux can get to fighting words fast. DH's mother is probably rolling in her grave because I put okra, chicken, shrimp and sausage in my gumbo. And I make my roux with butter, not oil. In her house, it was only chicken ever, but she would cook shrimp or oysters separate and you could add them to your bowl at the table. Okra never happened in her house, not in any way and it's one of our favorite veggies. People make a roux with OIL? Mais, non! Blasphemy!

I don't know. Your day sounds pretty productive,to me. Oh. You said, outside of the shopping trip. My bad. But now that you've made those purchases, you can move on to other things. Making all those purchases sounds exhausting. To go to various stores, park, look and decide what you want, ect. I hope your trip is fabulous!

I almost fainted over the light bill in Washington. I just checked ours here for the month we were gone $24. We produced 835 kwh and used 707. I didn't see anything about crediting us with the difference though, hum.
That's our bill for the outside light and base connection of $10 something plus we still have to pay the taxes, so $24.
I tried signing in to PSE but it was down for maintenance so likely can tomorrow. I want to see how much we used. Hubs is going to check the ductwork and if its not loose said he is calling an HVAC company to have it checked out when he is up there.
Need to go to bed, it's almost 2 AM.

Funerals are weird. It was certainly a difficult day, but it was also nice to connect with family that is so spread out over the country.
Our Birthday next month will hit me hard. Luckily DH is off of work that weekend. We will be headed to the Orioles game on the 10th, might just stay overnight.

I will preface this story by saying that that part of mom's family is not very diverse, though I have never heard of any of them acting racist. Keep in mind that we are in a very white, very rural, backroad Kentucky area.
My mom's youngest sister, who my parents actually raised, has been living with her SO for 13 years. He is black, and is an amazing man and very good to her, her kids, and her grandkids. I love him to pieces. To say he stuck out in the crowd in a gross understatement. I rode with them yesterday. After a small luncheon at the church we all headed to my Aunt's oldest daughter's house which was close by. It was about a half a mile up a mountain with only 1 other house on the road. He is always joking about something, and on the way up he joked that this had the looks of a lynching. I was in the front seat with him because I get car sick, and told him not to worry I'd be his bodyguard and protect him. He laughed and thanked me and said you notice P (my aunt) didn't say anything. 🤣 He was definitely a bright spot on a difficult day, and I appreciate him very much.

Guess I'll get to packing and head home. DH won't get home from work until about 8 tonight. I will be so glad to see him.
It is about an 8 hour drive, though I'm thinking about a pit stop at the state park not far from where I'm staying that we love for a short hike. It is like a rhododendron forest and should be in full bloom. That will help my ❤️.
Thanks to everyone here for their thoughts.

Good morning, invisible founts of erudition, visiting me in my trusty laptop. Happy Sunday to you. I hope your day is smooth and easy in every respect, and provides respite from pressures of life. Today is The Day to finalize packing up. We leave early Wednesday morning. All the talk of cooking and baking makes me miss my grandmother, my mother's mother, very much. She was an excellent scratch cook with no recipes at all but an uncanny feel for food of every type. My mother was, as well. With 5 kids we went through food very quickly but we always had ingredients. It was New England food: boiled New England dinner; chowders - corn, fish, quahog; Swedish pancakes; chili; spaghetti; lentil soup; Sunday roast with broccoli and mashed potato; muffins and puddings; scalloped potatoes with hot dogs or kielbasa; blueberry teacake; turkey; checken; oatmeal. It's been raining and rainy. Yesterday I got an aptly named fishing boat coming in to harbor, but there was no sun and precious few tiny dinosaurs at the beach.

Up, but wish I wasn't. Did broken sleep instead of taking enough useful stuff in retrospect. Did splurge on mandarins from Morocco that turned out to be very clementine like. Three of them could use help though. But the price had dropped to $4.99 for 3 lbs. So, I got them. Needed onions and bought a bunch of not scallions, but whatever they are called if you let them grow a little longer before pulling them out of the ground and selling them.
I think today I need to hoof it and get bottles of nasal hydration; I think it's just saline in a squeeze bottle, but I'll get a pack of three. One for work in my tote, one for home, and the third for when I run out wherever. Today's goal is finishing the claim form for AAA, my piece which I have started on. Bonus will be trying to tie it together and see if I can figure out if she did solicit and get the body shop estimate. Functional today but not as good as it could be.

In the Shetland Islands today, Letwick to be specific. This morning, we went on a bird tour, to a sanctuary. We had a fabulous, sunny day out and we’re good being out on water (as it was the only way to get there). Excellent tour, great guides. We took a walking tour through downtown Letwick, and all I can say is thank god it was Sunday. There were no less than 3 yarn shops we passed where I could have done some major credit card damage. The yarns I could just see through the window were nothing like you see in the US. We are already seriously out of luggage space.
Off to see Shetland ponies this afternoon.

The puppy doesn't sleep in yet which is probably good. I'm taking tomorrow off to watch field day and need to get things cleaned up today so I'm not stressed about it.

Personally I think the flavor of a butter-based roux is lost in a flavorful dish like gumbo, but my recipe calls for it. It's a bit trickier to control the coloring as the butter is more prone to scorching than oil. Also, oil is much cheaper than butter when you need a cup or three of it

Went to Aldi once I felt human again after last night. I hadn't been to the grocery store in 3 weeks. I spent $190 at freaking Aldi. I still have to finalize my Sam's order. That's not bad for three weeks. We're down to $150 a week (from about $200) and it feels like damned windfall. Yeah, but there's only 2 of us. My kid eats enough for an army.

So I'm guessing last night was fun, if followed by a painful morning It was good. I got to see some people I don't see that often. The outfits were also interesting. I got compliments on mine. Not bad for an old lady.

today is shaping up to be a good day. I slept until I woke up on my own, about 5min before the alarm I set at 9am. not bad for getting home after 130am. my coffee is delicious with some whipped cream and nutmeg, there was a newspaper in the driveway today, and it's bright and sunny already and drying out from last night's torrential rains. my drive home was one of the dicier ones I've had in awhile. I checked in with the group from last night's show, to let them know I got home safely. I was the farthest out and not staying overnight locally.
I got asked by a few people at the pre-show potluck, about this week and the work stuff. got a few leads on remote jobs, and am going to spend a little time with Indeed today before I go pick up the pups. but first, the Sunday newspaper. 😊

Knowing just how much you love shopping for clothes for yourself, this trip, or two, or three, should be interesting.

So I just ordered rubbers, or waterproof shoe covers if you will, for DH. He wears very specially modified shoes for his sugically corrected feet. If they get wet on our cruise that could be an issue. I expect we will be trooping through rain at some point. Hoping the rubbers work out. He could put them on his spare older pair of shoes.

Yep, my waterproof Merrill’s have gotten a workout on this trip. Last night, it poured and TD came back just a lot drenched. He may have finally retired his dad’s shoes. Today, I noticed he had pulled out his new ones. Guessing he was doing some squishing when he walked yesterday, as those shoes are so air conditioned.

We have a meeting with the cruise consultant this evening to determine if getting off the ship in NYC vs Reykjavik is feasible. We will have to move cabins, if we do this.
