My mom’s sister never learned these lessons…..and she was fired from really good jobs because she never learned lessons 1,2,3 and 5. It’s hard to watch in a 40+ year old adult who never learned these, and even my 15 year old self understood where she went wrong. However, TBH I’m not sure handing her this list at 16 would have helped. In her case, it was more her personality that exacerbated this list. I my sister’s case, she was the golden child in the family. Mom thought she could do no wrong, and everything sister did was remarkable. (So why did sister maintain a C average in HS if she was so remarkable? ) When you grow up that way, every time a boss or coworker tries to give you feedback on your job performance it seems like a personal verbal assault, which sends you sobbing into the bathroom. Which makes you continually changing jobs. My aunt didn’t go this route. She thought she knew everything, and would double down…..even when wrong. She ALWAYS knew more than her bosses, they were idiots who knew nothing. Only problem is she rarely lasted a year in her position. She’d override her boss, they’d get pissed off and fire her. I got a taste of it playing Scrabble with her. I even remember the word I argued with her over (wily). Apparent Merriam-Webster was incorrect too, as she went ballistic over this. She got her degree in English Lit and it trumped my biology degree. I had just started college, and I remember thinking how much this interaction explained her frequent loss of job. My mom used to say her sister was her own worst enemy. She was. |

Your aunt never heard of Wile E Coyote? That was where I got it from! In fact, I used that as an example and she tried to tell me it was a name, I couldn’t use it! Even though this happened 40+ years ago, I remember this happening like it was yesterday. It was one of those ‘ah ha’ moments when I realized why she was where she was in life. |
