Regarding paint, I discovered IKEA lists the paint brand and color used in their display rooms under the details. There is a color here called “lipgloss” by Dulux that had just a tiny of dusky pink to it in a living room display. I took a picture of it for future inspiration. I’ve tried a few times with IKEA, but I just do NOT like being in their store at all. One of my many, many quirks is always knowing where the exits are and how to get out of wherever I am, and I do not do well with how I lose all sense of direction and get lost in IKEA. Even if for some crazy reason I was lost in some woods, if I could calm down enough to try to think, I could mayyyybe figure out how to move in a specific direction instead of going in circles. If not for all the other living creatures in the woods, I’d almost rather be lost in the woods than go in an IKEA store again.

They know you will get lost, that is why they have a cafe and restaurant, so you can replenish yourself as you make your way through their village! I will be spending some time in IKEA because it looks like no where else in town has anything in stock. So if it is a NEED, I choose from what ikea has in stock. I got a mattress from there. It’s very comfortable, and it was in stock. The mattress stores in town had a minimum of 3 weeks for anything besides floor stock. I can wait 3 weeks for a couch, but not a mattress.

I strongly support your strategy, @pinkcshmere . Pick the pieces that are most important to you and choose them for beauty, comfort and quality, which does mean they'll cost. With furniture you really do get rewarded for choosing well. Years from now you'll be much happier. Yes! If you aren’t planning to move anytime soon, get what lasts and what you love! Not that you can’t move with your pieces, just that moves can be expensive and tough on furniture. Besides, some pieces are special because of the home they are chosen for, they just “fit”. Go ahead and make it yours. I would prefer to be able to live here, with Mister, for the rest of my life. I am becoming concerned about crime in the area though, so it is possible that we will move somewhere else. I will move if I need or really want to, for whatever reason, but I’d prefer this be the forever home it was intended to be for me. So for now, I will do exactly what you said and do what fits this house while I make it mine.

I’m not knocking IKEA at all. I’ll still buy their stuff (and have), I just have to order online lol. That’s better for my pocketbook anyway. I only go on their website to see what they have when I’m looking for a specific item. Since I can’t handle the stores, I don’t get distracted and buy stuff I just happened to see along the way.

Hubs bought 2 X 4's for the end walls in the room in the basement, we are not talking a lot of them. He said they were $11 EACH!!!, He spent $800 for the boards and 2 interior doors, unbelievable, no wonder not many houses are being built. He has a couple of sheets of drywall, said he will get it after he gets the ends up. We are thinking we may not insulate the outside wall and drywall it like the rest, may just paint it, because of the expense. He said we are going to have $4k in the bathroom, walls, and ceiling down there, even with him doing it. Crazy high prices!!
Not that long ago they were $3 plus each. One of the reasons we quit buying and remodeling houses, can't afford to do so.

I just looked up 2 x 4 x 8s in my area. Home Depot and Lowes both show them on their websites for $7 a piece. They may even have cheaper, lesser-grade wood in the stores since they call these "appearance grade" and "select."
That $11 is about 57% higher than what lumber costs in Indianapolis. If someone needed a lot, they could save some money by driving to and purchasing in Indy.
They are building plenty of new houses around here.
If what you really want is drywall and insulation, then go for it. A couple thousand dollars isn't that much money if it makes you happy and more comfortable in your home.

Contractor just left. He was as surprised as the designer at the size of my tub. It is a 6 foot tub. The designer told me and his that I had measured wrong. No, I did not measure wrong.
He will not schedule the job until everything is in. Next step is having his tile sub contractor come out and do his measurements.
The contractor serves as the general contractor. He buys what I picked out at the bath and kitchen store for wholesale and sells to me at wholesale. He makes him money in the labor. I can't do it and I need a tub and not a shower.
He says the demolition and building it up for tiling should take a day. He says once things are in, it should take 7 to 10 days. He assured me they clean up every night. We shall see.
I also need to pick out a paint color.
My question is what kind of paint do I put in a bathroom? I know it isn't the kind of paint that goes in the living room.
I am ready to do this and start using my handicapped accessible tub.
I thought the ceramic tile would be destroyed during the demolition. Since I want to keep it, he said it will not be destroyed.

TheOtherMe, water- and mildew-resistant paint is for sale, specifically for bathroom use. Just pick a color and the shop will mix it in the right base for this application.

Thank you finnime I have a good idea of the color I want. Contractor did suggest not putting a dark color in a bathroom with no window.

Thank you all for the suggestions on the paint, I ended up getting a sample in satin as he couldn't mix it up in eggshell and I painted a big block on the wall. I like the way it looks and it doesn't look too shiny at all.

I love the tile that has bits of glitter mixed in it, must be the three year old in me coming out!

I love the tile that has bits of glitter mixed in it, must be the three year old in me coming out! Despite my efforts to try to learn the “rules” to help me furnish and decorate my home in a way that looks good, I’m also good with breaking the “rules” to do whatever is pleasing to me or the general “you”. I don’t really know what would really please me as far as decor, I just have an idea of what “looks” appeal to me, and I research to try to figure out how and if I can make those looks work for me in my home. If I already knew I like shiny and glittery objects in my home, that is what I would include in my decor. Unless I’m preparing a property to sell, I want my home to be what I like and what makes me feel happy to be at home, whether it’s in or out of style and regardless of what people that don’t live with me think. So I suggest you let your inner 3yo fly free with your decor if that’s what makes you happy and your DW is okay with it.

I was just glancing at house listings nearby and thought about Pink Cashmere. About half of the pictures of the house were lighting fixtures! And they were not all that impressive. Meanwhile, my current home obsession is doorknobs. I hate the interior doorknobs in my house. They are probably original late 80s. There are 15 in my house, all except 3rd bedroom has newer ones. Now I just have to figure out what I want and convince DH how bad they are.

Here is a picture of my ugly doorknobs. This one is not bad. Some of the others are worn from use.

TheOtherMe redoing your bathroom sounds exciting. Maybe not so exciting when you’re the one living there while it’s happening, but the end result. I hope you LOVE it when it’s done.

I’m not thrilled with the door handles throughout my house either. I’ve never seen any like them, so I do like that they are different, but I kinda don’t like the actual handles themselves. I’m not in a big hurry to change them though. I think there are 13. 3 of the bedrooms have glass knobs on the closet doors. alabamagal I hope you show us what you find that you like.

Yes and when I told him I had already picked out three different kinds of tile, he was going there to see what I am doing so he has a better idea of what I want.

We switched all the knobs in our house to handles when we moved in. Handles are easier for older hands to grasp and use to open a door. We also have grab bars in our shower. It was all meant for my folks, but that didn't work out. DH and I are happy to have done it though as it will help us age in place.

Mister’s dog quickly learned how to jump on our bedroom door and make it open so she can get in. Her busting in our bedroom has scared the crap out of me many times in the middle of the night.

One of many reasons I am having the tile shower done. There will be grab bars in it. Since I live alone, I never use the door knobs except to open the doors in and out of the house. Someday I may go to handles on the door knobs.

My house has the original 1945 glass knobs on every interior door. I really like them. They dress up the place.

Tile guy has just left. I can now see in my mind what the shower will look like. It's going to be beautiful, absolutely beautiful.
He's going to give it some pop with the tiles I picked out. He said I picked out beautiful tile. I wonder how expensive the tile is that I picked out. I had given her my budget and she said we were within budget including installation.
Since it's a 6 foot tub, I'm going to have a nice wide seat. There will be a ledge the entire length of the shower and, of course, grab bars.
Gave me a timeline of how he works and recommended a color of paint. Like the contractor, he said don't go with a dark color.

Handyman should be coming today to work on the bathroom. Medicine cabinet and lights (hopefully today). Then still need to do the vanity and flooring. The mess will be today with the medicine cabinet. Hoping we aren't without that bathroom much if at all and that it's done soon. I'm ready to get the boxes out of there and get it put together.

Tile guy said since I am not replacing the toilet there will be no need to turn off the water to the toilet. I only wanted it to be available during the evening while they are working and he said that should be fine and they would be willing to leave while I used it. I can go downstairs.
He said he wasn't sure if I had another bathroom. I don't know what I would do without a shower for two weeks.

My friend had a nightmare bathroom rehab. She only had one bathroom, so spent over 2 months at her boyfriends apartment while she had no water. She had to take that contractor to court and hired another contractor. While that one worked for a few weeks, she didn’t want to wear out her welcome at her boyfriends so she used the toilet and took showers on the roof, using the pool bathroom. If anyone caught her she just acted like she had taken a swim and was rinsing off!

With the references I have seen, I hope that does not happen to me. I don't know if I would undertake this if I only had one bathroom.
Even with apartment living, it's been a long time since I've had one bathroom in any place I have lived.
When I rented a tiny house in the mountains of Colorado, my pipes froze and burst. It was about -40 and northerly winds hitting the pipes in walls with little insulation.
I did stay with friends for a few days while that got fixed.

I'm glad we have a 2nd bathroom because everything takes longer than expected. The floor should be a 1 day job, but I need to finish the stones behind the vanity after current one is moved so just like everything, it will take longer than I think it should.
