I think a lot of people of our parent's generation are racist, homophobic, etc. More than we realize.

It’s a bad look for a guy who basically made a living off culturally black music.

Yes it is. I learned this several months ago.
I will not be listening to his music again and I attended several of his concerts in the years when I was attending concerts 3 or 4 nights a week.

It’s a bad look for a guy who basically made a living off culturally black music. One of my most influential mentors has made her living working with at risk populations...not only trying to give kids some skills so that they can see a path to a middle class lifestyle, but also making sure that culturally black, hispanic, latino music is treated the same as dead white men music.
I mean, sure she's not famous like Eric Clapton. But she's probably touched the lives of thousands. I'm really not kidding. And I have to say, my work with her has fundamentally changed me in a way that famous people never have.
She is the one who taught me that "ghetto" had multiple meanings. She just can't say "Susie, the administrative staff person behind the counter at 4pm." She has to say "Susie, the rather large woman"
I'm also pretty sure she got shoved out of one of the last groups she started...because she can't with keeping up with how society is change.. And then rather than just nod and move along, she complains loudly about it. She doesn't like to admit that using "ghetto" as an adjective to describe a POC is racist. She doesn't see it like that. She just sees using "ghetto" as a very economical way to converse with someone. She could explain herself in 5 sentences, or she could use ghetto and move on.
She has an amazing heart. She's offered her place as a safe refuge for kids who couldn't find one (of course this was 50 years ago). She's hired folks she's knows are financially in trouble to help her to offer some stability. Then there's spending your life trying to show kids a different path so they can get out of generational poverty. It's not just in the classroom lessons. It's also with the one-on-one time she spends with these kids, just talking to them and helping them figure things out. So the kid can come to their own conclusion that if they keep up their path, they will end up just like their mom (and not in a good way.) She, like most people, is human and flawed.

He's a brilliant guitarist .... but he should never speak.
Just another, none-too-bright drug addled junkie. and this abusive tirade was undoubtedly his lowest point.

Interesting that Clapton’s comments were made 45 years ago. One would hope that he has become a little more enlightened over the past half century.

Interesting that Clapton’s comments were made 45 years ago. One would hope that he has become a little more enlightened over the past half century. From what I read in the linked article, he’s never expressed any remorse for what he said though. At best, he pretends he doesn’t know why he said that, and speaks of how many Black friends he has. Sometimes, he’s said it was funny. I’ve come to believe that a drunken mind speaks a sober truth. So I believe he meant what he said. He was under the influence just enough to say what he really thought. And nowhere in the linked article (I didn’t care enough to go searching beyond that) do I get the impression that he’s ever felt like it was a big deal after the fact. It’s “funny”.

I believe it. Jason Aldean (country music) has come out as anti-mask and anti-Biden. I was never a big fan of his, but I'll be sure that none of my money flows his way, either.

Alcohol 'unfilters' people, which is why we say dumb and nonsensical things when we're drunk. When people start spewing hatred it's because that's what they really think or feel deep down and they keep it suppressed when they're sober. I remember when Mel Gibson got arrested for drunk driving and started demanding/complaining that the arresting officer was Jewish (no idea if he was or not) and then went to rehab because it was the alcohol talking. I said to my husband that it was strange that "turning into a bigot" wasn't listed as one of the side-effects of on the bottle of wine we were drinking...

Is it? I figured that whole thing was so crazy and nonsensical that his brain was mushing together random things. (I should look for a study on this.)
ETA: thinking of the many drinkers in my life/family, and considering those that become jolly/affectionate/caring while drinking, but were not like that sober. Should I have ignored how they acted the rest of the time? (Anyway, considering these type of scenarios, I try to turn to the opposite scenario and see how that compares.) I think my sister even had alcoholic dementia.

So an artist who disagrees with your political views and vaccination beliefs is scratched off your list of entertainers. If that were the case the Hollywood crowd and most current singers that are popular should be boycotted by all anti vaxxers, and rightwing Republicans. Be part of the solution not part of the problem. I never backed the nationally known anti war and anti government recording artists of the 60's and 70's but I certainly went to some of their concerts when they toured in my area and bought their albums. Entertainment is entertainment in my book. The world has changed for us, and not sure for the better. Liberals are now similar to the hardcore Democrats who worked to hold down the minorities in the 50's and 60's in the south.

Comparing liberals who boycott celebrities to those who held down minorities is such a twisted stretch it made me LOL.
I'd like my entertainment without politics thank you very much. I'd very much like it without hate speech and pseudo-science. That's not cancel culture - that's what we used to call common sense.

You support the companies who treat employees right, and avoid buying products from companies who don't. Quite simple, really. Entertainers should entertain. Period. If they're announcing their toxic views, then they deserve to have fans walk away. Clapton, Aldean, or whoever, go ahead & be "proud" of your beliefs, but don't be surprised when you lose fans because of it.

I remember watching on TV as someone steamrolled over their CDs while crowds cheered. Also would like to point out the insanity of "Freedom Fries" Republicans were on the cancel culture train all the way back in the early 00's. Refusing to support someone who spouts racist ideas is quite different from changing the name of French Fries because you're pissed France won't back us up in a totally unnessecary war.

Clapton has screamed loudly recently because of not being able to have concerts in the UK and other places. He will never get a dime of my money.
I don't pay money for country music so Aldean doesn't need to worry about my money.
Politics have been part of my music since the 60's and 70's. I definitely do not pay money to artists I don't agree with. I will gladly pay money for artists I agree with.
Musicians that were doing political songs back then are still doing political music. It's needed. Sometimes it helps get the point across that what this country is doing is f*cked.
If a fan attends one of their concerts and expects there will be no politics, that's on the fan.

I was disappointed to hear all those things about Jason Aldean, because I do like his music. but country music, its stars and fans generally tend to skew a bit more conservative than I do. so I can't say I was all that surprised to hear *an* artist in that genre has these views. another very public example was made of Morgan Wallen this past year - going toward what gs11rmb said about alcohol "unfiltering" people. he was blackballed across the industry to make a point, his music was pulled from the radio/XM/etc, he was banned from appearing at awards shows and removed from eligibility, and nobody booked him anywhere. he's slowly starting to re-emerge. and re: cancel culture - for absolute real, no Republican or conservative person that ever had $#!t to say about the Dixie Chicks has any right to complain they are being cancelled for their opinions. sit down and shut up, sweetie.

He is free to say whatever he wants. There may be professional consequences for what he says. Seems like your hero Trump had plenty to say about the NFL, including things about boycotts. If I make a private decision about how to spend my discretionary income is a problem, them maybe you should let us know how you spend yours. I will decide privately whether to support these musicians.

Most of the old white people around here are racist. Many have not been out of the state and aren't exposed to new people or ideas. They have their stereotypes and that won't change. I know locally we now have a few black kids, Indian, chinese, and mexican, all American citizens I'm sure. So they are slowly being dragged into the here and now because their kids are friends with them. Most kids start out color blind. I can only hope this helps, but I still hear it. You can bet when they say lazy it means people of color, same with welfare queens. they need to look around all these doing that here are white.
And anti vaxxers, oh yes, not telling those slugs what to do. I wish we were gone from here, got into it on facebook again today. I'm not on it much anymore, need to be even less.

Jason Aldean was onstage when the Las Vegas shooter shot and killed 60 people, wounding more than 400 more, from his Mandalay Bay hotel room.
He is a proud gun owner and the little I have read about what he thinks about guns has been very wishy washy because he didn't want to alienate fans. I guess he must feel his fans are largely anti-mask and anti-Biden and those who aren't are worth alienating.
I prefer the music and politics of Bruce Springsteen.

I agree with this. I like to watch and listen to talented musicians ..... but when it comes to politics, I'm smart enough to make my own mind up... as is all our right.
I don't want to be preached at by someone who has been paid money to sing/play guitar.
One of the reasons no-one watches award ceremonies anymore
too much sermonising by the unqualified.

Travis Tritt doesn't believe in vaccines because freedom. He just cancelled 4 concerts that required proof of vaccines or negative tests. However, people pulled up the seating charts from TM before he cancelled and hardly any tickets had been sold, so probably dollars.

He's currently blocking all sorts of people on Twitter, including people who have nothing to do with him/don't follow him or anything. It's a whole different world there, so I'm not sure what this strategy is supposed to accomplish.
