I also think athletic department is way too much when compared to what is spent on academics. Supposedly college exists for academics, not athletics. You don't see professors making millions of dollars. Professors probably aren't generating the kind of money that big time programs do. They can, but right now, colleges don't use them properly for the visibility they could get. For example, Monmouth University is a community college in Monmouth County. It also is the home of their relatively well known and respected political poll.

I can see this issue becoming a factor in college recruitment. "Does this 17 year old top recruit have the maturity to be a team player in an environment where self promotion (and stat padding?) could mean big bucks" will be a question they will have to consider. But it's not as if this is introducing the idea of self promotion and stat padding to team games - it just had a longer end game to it monetarily before now. True. But adding "NOW" with "teenaged freshman/sophomore" I think will bump it up a notch. For example: Jalen Suggs played his one year of college hoops at Gonzaga University, a top notch basketball program and he will be a top 5 pick in the draft. He could have played at UCLA and been a top 5 draft pick. If he was a year younger and choosing where to market himself for that year, hmmm, LA or Spokane, WA?

An Iowa men's basketball player's website went life last night at 12:01 AM. His shoe sold out in minutes. 9 He's doing his first appearance for $$$ today. He had said he would not return to college hoops for his 6th year (one injury year and the extra year of eligibility for covid), without the NIL. Jordan Bohannon? I found the below linked article and this quote stood out along with the general content of the article. Academically, Bohannon must finish the semester strong to be eligible next season. link There is just a little too much ego there for me to be impressed. I support student-athletes not being exploited while in college but this guy seems to be all about himself. JoBo is not all about himself at all. Iowa had a player die in a car accident on the way home from a team dinner many winters ago. His name was Chris Street. Street had the school record of consecutive free throws at 34. JoBo intentionally missed a free throw so he would not break the record. Coach said it was his own decision. I think now it's an unwritten rule with the players that the record will never be broken. He's cocky as they come but is a good team player on the court. He let Luke Garza have all the glory the last two seasons. The crowd comes to life when he is on the court. Like many 3 point shooters, he's streaky. At the free point line, he's the best on the team. He's going to be a crippled old man after his hip injuries and surgeries and he knows it. He has played in a lot of pain until he couldn't gut it out any more. Nothing wrong with making the most of what you have. He must be academically eligible because he's been going to "voluntary" workouts all summer. He has also made it clear to kids who aspire to collegiate basketball that those "voluntary" workouts are NOT voluntary. If you don't go and do the work, you will not play.

Some conferences are hoping this brings them better players because the P5 conferences can give them more opportunity to monetize themselves.
People at Colorado are saying it's about time the distance runners and skiers make some money. Those are the only two teams that have brought home national championships since 1990. Yes, they go to the Olympics and the elite ones get full rides, but those are not sports that draw crowds. Colorado is the only team in the Pac to have a skiing team.
One of the distance runners completed her eligibility in May and made the Olympic team. She has had no sponsor so professional runners have given her training gear and lots of advice. It worked and she's going to Tokyo.
Gymnasts and swimmers just might get college degrees with this.
These kids need agents now or very smart parents.
