All of the public school staff in our district have to be fully vaxxed in a month. It will be interesting to see how this will exacerbate the labor shortage we already have.

The vaccines for younger kids are coming soon. I am hoping that Pfizer submits to the FDA in the next couple of weeks and then if FDA takes the usual 4 weeks to approve, your son could get the first shot in early November and the second one before Thanksgiving. I know that every day feels like it's super long, I've been there waiting for all the previous approvals. But, at least there are precautions taken at his school, and the high vaccination rate and low cases in your community will keep him safer. Hang in there! Definitely keeping a close eye on the approval process. Buzz is Pfizer will submit for EUA within the week, I think I posted upthread that Fauci thought the FDA might push it through in 3 weeks (also that I think he’s probably over optimistic). I’m much more familiar with the drug development process that takes 12-16 years to bring a new drug to market, so it is dizzying and amazing to see what was accomplished in 12-16 months. We are very, very fortunate to live where we do. Apologies for whining. I am waiting anxiously for the child approvals. My kids are 2 and 4 and I want them vaccinated like yesterday! One issue I can see if Pfizer’s gets approved is where will the shots be given? Most vaccines for the bitty kids are done in pediatrician offices. Will those offices have the required freezers/logistics needed to store those vaccines? If not, will the pharmacies and such that do have the freezers be willing to do vaccines on very small children? Most pharmacies don’t do vaccines on really small children so I could see it being an issue if the places that can support the vaccine don’t have staff that can do the vaccines on kids

Got a cryptic robocall at work: read the email we sent you. Ok, sent to which email address? Nothing on any work emails. The robot voice badly garbled the name it was from, but had some connection to the school system. Checked their website, zilch. Finally got a call from DH; he'd gotten the same terse call, and got the email. It was from the BOCES program DS5 is in - on two days (9/16, 9/17) at least 1-2 people who'd tested positive had been in the facility. Yeah, ten/eleven days ago, real useful info now. Did they tell the kids going daily (from at least 8 different districts)? No; DS5 and another BOCES student had no knowledge of it, and asked which program (also not in the email). Was it on the school district website? No. Oh, yeah - BOCES open house is Thursday evening. To reduce risks, how about if A-L people come in the first hour, and M-Z people come in the second hour? But if that doesn't work for you, just do whatever. (I'm paraphrasing from the invite, but really?)

The timing of notifications you are describing is what is happening at the few schools in Iowa who are notifying parents of positive cases. Too much time lag to do any good.
My niece scheduled booster shots for her parents as soon as my sister gets home.

I am eagerly awaiting to see if the mandate goes into affect for companies of 100+ employees. Our site is not but out company is and they have sent out forms requiring you report your vaccination status. Here in lovely Omaha Nebraska we have some freaking die hard anti-vaxxer AND anti-masker combos. Considering they are losing employees left and right in the last few months this could pose a real threat. THen there would be the problem of finding new people willing to get vaccinated to hire. I don't have to worry about being screwed back here we're one of the few departments 100% vaccinated. I just hope they don't expect us to "cross train" like they did before people were forced to wear masks around here and someone managed to knock out 80% of the front. This is your own stupidity you own it while I sit and eat popcorn.

Pediatricians likely don’t have -80 freezers but there are Dewar-style cooling devices for transportation as necessary and the Pfizer vaccine can be stored at more attainable temperatures for short term (and Moderna and JNJ are less demanding). It’s not like it has to be at -80 C right up to the point it goes into your arm. Worst case your pedi might schedule vaccine clinic days like ours does for flu shots. I do want to clarify that to the best of my knowledge the coming EUA will only cover 5-11. The 6 months and up study is in progress but not finished, not sure how long the delay will be.

I wouldn't think storage would be too much of an issue either. Many childhood vaccines require being at a specific temperature for storage as well. They may not have a -80 in the pediatric office but there is likely several elsewhere in the building that can be used and then a temporary means once they arrive to the office. We're going to Walgreens or Wal-mart. We were able to get Abby's flu shot that way we just had to have the pediatrician send a "scrip" for it. Likely COVID shots will be the same way.

I work at a global pharmaceutical corporation (many thousands of employees), and my company is requiring that the 1st dose of a vaccine must be taken by Nov 1. If you don’t have a valid reason (medical/religious), then you will find yourself unemployed. I have two friends working in another massive pharma company and they received the same mandate - except their 1st shot date is 10/4.

Curious about the religious exemption - what religion? None of the major world religions object to vaccines. Subsets of them do for various reasons. Evangelical Christians have hung their hat on anti-vaccination as a way to gain political clout. UNMC and the hospital tried that once with the flu shot and they quickly repealed it because too many people were refusing to vaccinate due to "religion". I seriously doubt the majority of them were actually religious in any capacity they just latched onto an out for getting the flu shot. Documented medical excemptions and that was it. For the COVID shot they have a panel of qualified doctors reviewing medical exemptions on a case by case basis. None of this my ciropracter says I can't get it bull crap.

Is it Jehovahs Witnesses that refuse blood transfusions? Not sure how many Christian Scientists there are left. I remember the measles outbreaks in Orthodox Jewish communities in new york a few years ago, so I am wondering whether they refuse vaccinations as well. which is to say, I don’t know enough about any of these religions to say whether they would have a valid claim or inclination to religious objections, but I could see some fairly major splinter sections issuing exemptions. I also wondered whether the guy in Quebec who beat up a nurse for having vaccinated his wife was from a misogynist religious background or culture or just controlling and abusive all on his own.
I hate religion as an excuse for shitty behavior.
Pfizer has transferred initial data on 5 to 11 yo to FDA, which is apparently separate from asking for an EUA. Fauci still hopeful for shots starting by end of October. There are two separate other trials covering 2 to 4yo and 6mo to not quite 2yo, data expected by the end of the year.

Yes, the Jehovah's witnesses refuse blood transfusions. They are quite respectful about that, and do not put anyone else's' health at risk, and you can refuse treatments. The bigger issue is when it comes to minors.
The Orthodox Jewish communities in NY have abysmal vaccination rates, and have had recurrent outbreaks of measles. No mainstream religion is against vaccination, so this excuse is just a red herring.

Damn that was easy. I was still going back and forth on the 6 or 8 months gap for a booster shot. But then I remembered how hard it was to find an appointment in February (that is really just a short while ago but it seems so much longer) and that the under 12 crowd may soon get a chance too so I looked for an appointment - next week Monday I will be "boosted". I had a choice of where and when

My sister in law got what I call a BS religious exemption. It's based on supposedly the mRNA vaccines started from aborted fetus cells. Except even the Pope said the pandemic outweighed that. But that's the grounds upon which she applied and was granted it. She is also 100% remote.
We have until Nov 22nd to be fully vaccinated. I am waiting to see if my brother in law gets the dang vaccine or gambles. Or if he applies for an exemption. The exemptions for us were phrased as reasonable accommodation instead of exemption. All requests go through that office. So I assume it to include objections on religious grounds.

Those I suppose those were adults of a non Christian denomination so that is different than potential unborn fetus cells.

NomoreDramaQ1015 she does paperwork for grants for medical research for a huge hospital/research institution. She has to know. She didn't want the vaccine so that was a convenient out.

StL is back under a mask mandate but church and school have decided to maintain their optional status. I'm so, so tired of following the rules while everyone else pisses in the wind.

I don't "follow the rules". I think it is a smart move to wear a mask when I am in enclosed public spaces and act accordingly.

I was talking to my uncle R last weekend and he told me my uncle G is not vaccinated and refuses to mask. I knew he was far right, but so is my dad and he is vaccinated and masks only when mandated. Guess I won't be going near my uncle G for the foreseeable future. I don't really care for him anyway, so I haven't seen him in several months at least.

A very large chunk of primary drug research is done on fetal cells……only because they have not usually been infected by viruses, which can sometimes confound results but they have longevity in culture. Normal adult cells used in cultures are a pain in the ass to work with, as the cells go through a natural senescence and screw up results (BTDT). I imagine that if you go through 100% of the research process to get a drug from the lab to the pharmacy, there WILL be a time where fetal cells have been used. So where do you draw the line?

Not only that but some of our most detailed medical knowledge on certain things came from Nazi experiments in concentration camps. If you are so pro life that you refuse to get the COVID shot then any treatments brought on by past human suffering should be off limits. What makes the suffering of concentration camp prisoners more acceptable than fetal cells? What about past experiments on prisoners, the mentally ill and minorities? This information is not hard to find if you are "doing your research". Why is the COVID shot the line? And I am not knocking the real moral and ethical discussions we should be and are having about all of this in the medical and research communities. I am calling out Karen who "did her research'" on Facebook and righteously refuses to get the COVID shot because she's such an outstanding good moral Christian.

I am enjoying Toronto because no one I have run in to indoors has not been wearing a mask.
It's also a building rule that only two unrelated people can be in an elevator.
Every time someone gets on with me, they ask if it's okay with me. Each person stands in a corner.
Signs all over the building about distancing, footprints on the floor.
It's a good feeling.

Our school is masks optional, but the kids must wear masks when passing thru the hallways or interacting with other class groups. Apparently this wasn't lenient enough, two 3rd graders showed up with doctors' notes excusing them from this policy. That was a fun conversation with my 3rd grader last night. What do you mean some doctors will write notes about masks?

Why do I feel like all these doctors notes are a form of abelism?
I'm sure parents of kids who have sensory disorders and other types of issues that may have made mask compliance difficult were working with the doctors and therapists to figure out how to protect their kids. O they went to home school/online. I know that's what several people I talked to last year did with their special needs kids.
What a slap in the face because it's difficult enough to get help for those kids but now they are probably all considered Karens thanks to the real Karens getting notes from the Chiropractor saying Johnny is excused from wearing a mask because he can't breath.

DD13 said it's awfully convenient that two different kids in the same class got notes 6 weeks after school started. She also said that one of them has a little brother who also had a note. Fortunately, she said it after DD9 had moved along. Too hard to explain the nuance of hypocrisy to DD9, but I applauded DD13 for her critical thinking skills (pun intended).
Frustrating that both of these families are new to the private school; coming from public school to 'escape' masking. They knew our limited rules when they joined.
8th grade teacher tested positive this week and another teacher went to get tested yesterday. 6th grader tested positive Mon, but no one else has to quarantine including his sports team buddies who have practiced together unmasked all week.
Also got to explain to DD13 that the mask 'debate' is heating up again as StL went back under mask mandate. Fun explaining that our church and school have decided they don't have to comply. She cried, I cried.

My son is in a public school district, and the superintendent wrote a strongly worded email to everyone in the district saying in no uncertain terms that masks in any and all school buildings are mandatory regardless of vaccination status. Actually, the state has mandated that masks are required in every government building regardless of status.

Actually, the state has mandated that masks are required in every government building regardless of status. Atlanta's suburban counties have been all over the news as they vacillate between optional and mandatory masks. The two in-town districts have been mandatory from the beginning and that includes indoor sports. My 13 year old has been playing volleyball while masked. I haven't heard one complaint from her, her teammates, or the other district teams. Meanwhile this woman was on TV with her 3rd and 1st grade daughters who were saying it was too difficult to breath while wearing a mask at their desks...
