I throw out both PB and jelly and open new jars for next time and on and on. I don’t keep left overs of anything. Can’t finish in one meal out it goes. Fraid of germs also. Food waste (and waste of any kind) makes ma sad. And what does it do to your grocery bill? Couldn't you put some peanut butter and jelly in dishes, eat from those and save the rest? If you don't need the extra money freed up by wasting less food, I bet the local food bank can. I understand the concern about food going bad but most things I prepare last for a week and by then I've eaten them. Condiments practically last forever. I couldn't find the sarcastic emote to put with my post. And just curious as to who would think I was serious. But I don't cook at lot - we have super good restaurants here and I planned my retirement to take care of eating out like having a travel budget - I have both
ETA: I donate to food bank and volunteer to work in one of their "community gardens" but that's a labor of love since I love digging in the dirt!

I couldn't find the sarcastic emote to put with my post. And just curious as to who would think I was serious. I'm glad to know you were joking! My maternal grandparents raised 5 kids in the Great Depression and were a bit too fanatical about not wasting food. I guess some of it rubbed off on me.

DH ate the heels. Along with the rest of the loaf, usually in one sitting. He loved his bread. And peanut butter. Bleah. Me? I just started using the loaf of bread that's been in my freezer since maybe October? I've never had to worry about eating the heels but at least now I have some ideas what to do with them.

I will keep the bread bag with nothing but the ends in there, because I don’t want to waste it. But I don’t want to eat it, either. Eventually using them to make toast with peanut butter when I am really hungry is an acceptable.

If I'm running low on bread, yes. If it's really good homemade bread, yes. Otherwise, no.

PB&J on dark rye or pumpernickel. Strawberry preserves and extra crunchy PB. Weirdo. PBJ goes on white bread only, as well as grilled cheese. Ham on rye.

Eventually using them to make toast with peanut butter when I am really hungry is an acceptable. BF was over for dinner last night and there was one dinner roll left. Since it's basically white bread, which I try to avoid 99% of the time, I didn't want it around. I tore it up into pieces and threw it outside. I've got bird feeders that keep dropping precipitously because there are a ton of hungry birds fattening up for the winter, so I'm sure all the bits are gone by now. I figure that's not wasting it.

there's actually a lot of bread in my house right now, which is not typical. I've got the ends of scala and sourdough loaves (going out with the trash tonight), and a brand new loaf of a tuscan pane that tastes like sourdough. there's also a package of English muffins in the cabinet, and ciabatta rolls in the freezer. white bread for PBJ and grilled cheese, sure. otherwise I want something that tastes good. and, for the last time, it's TONIC

Absolutely! I spread the peanut butter on the back of the end slice and the jam on the second slice of bread. White bread only. Just as God intended.

I have to agree, soda it is. The rest of you are completely bonkers calling it something else Back in my 1950s Catholic grammar school days the nuns called it tonic. Around the early '60s we all started calling it soda though some called it pop.

-soda is carbonated water. as in, the mixer in a "vodka soda" -sweet, fizzy drinks are tonic. -the stuff with quinine in it is tonic water.

You must have been raised by wolves. Coke, pepsi, ginger ale, 7 up and the like are SODA. I have never heard such a level of nonsense by supposedly intelligent people

My grandma was raised in South Carolina, whenever we asked for a “pop” she threatened to pop us in the nose 🙂, but would always be willing to share a soda with us.

We do not eat the heels of store bought loaves, but they do not go to waste. We stick them in the freezer, and when the batch is large enough I run them through the food processor to make breadcrumbs.

Does that make it an undie over combo! As long as it does the job I don’t care. How many of you visit someone and go to bathroom and change the way their toilet paper hangs? Fess up

1. The heels, like I said I love them. Some mentioned about using with grilled cheese sandwiches. Forever, I always used American or Velvetta (fake cheese) for these sandwhiches. The last few year have used cheddar, so much better.
2. Toilet paper under. That's what my parents did. Does anyone here do the opposite of what your parents did?
ETA: Upper Midwest with MPL so it is pop

Regarding the feeding of bread to birds or other wildlife, only my grey squirrels eat bread or associated products and very rarely. The local BBQ place insists on throwing slices of white bread in with our order, so once a week the umpteen squirrels (9 at last count) get 2 slices of bread, maybe a handful of tortilla chips, and another handful of wonton strips. Our section of town is very diverse so even our squirrels enjoy fusion cuisine. Birds, possums, rats and raccoons prefer to dine on our offerings of millet, milo, sunflower seed and peanuts along with the squirrels on no-carb days. I think we have raised avian and mammalian snobs.

I just remember I was thankful my dad had his dental office attached to the house and there was a third bathroom available to be used before work or school began for two adults and four kids.

I thought better of you, NastyWoman. even the patent shows the TP goes over. That schematic proves my point - there is no control mechanism to stop the paper from rolling wildly out of control -> any ligical person knows that it goes UNDER!!!
