Do you eat the end on a loaf of bread (heel), yes or no?
I do not, never have, I feel it’s only there to feed the birds 🙂

It's my favorite part of the loaf.

I love it for mopping up sauce/stews. those slices are always a little sturdier than the middle slices.

It's my favorite part of the loaf. Especially on homemade bread.
If it's store bought, sometimes the end is super thin and not great. I'm about 50/50 eating and throwing to the chickens with those.

Absolutely not. I'm not a complete savage. Well, yes I am. I'm still not eating the heel of the bread.

No. They are too dry for a sandwich and I don't like the texture. Yuck.

Nope. Never have. And I sometimes don't eat the slice of bread right after the heel too.

Yup, love the heel toasted with a poached egg on it.
Also untoasted with almond butter on it.

If I'm running low on bread, yes. If it's really good homemade bread, yes. Otherwise, no.

I thought it existed to keep the rest of the slices fresh! J/k, but I only eat it as a last resort, and I rarely finish a loaf of bread.

I always want the end cut - of banana bread, of homemade bread, of roast beef, of pound cake...
But as many pointed out, the heel of factory bread is not great for making sandwiches, so I skip it for that. If it's not super thin it's ok for toast, but those Swiss cheese slices are only good for breadcrumbs.

And here I thought the question was going to be “does your chewing gum lose it’s flavor on the bedpost overnight.”
I rarely eat end pieces of bread but save and use to make bread crumbs.

No, we never eat it. Half the time we don't finish the loaf anyway.

I thought it existed to keep the rest of the slices fresh! J/k, but I only eat it as a last resort, and I rarely finish a loaf of bread. When I open a new loaf of store-bought bread, and while I don't eat the heel, neither do I throw it out. As you wrote, even if just kidding, I think keeping the heel does indeed keep the slices below it fresh a little bit longer.

I don't use the heel for sandwiches, but like Chiver, great for sopping up stews or using with soups. My favorite use though is toasting it - then putting tons of butter on it

Always. Back in the dark ages, my mother bought bread from an actual bakery, and on the way home, she would eat the ends of the bread. For years, I was always puzzled as to why store bread had ends and the loaves she got from the bakery didn't. Miss you, Mom.

They make great croutons. Otherwise, not unless it is bakery (or my) bread. Then we fight over who gets the heel.

I don't eat the heel. DH can't stand that I won't eat it, so he eats it. He hates to throw away food.

It depends on a lot of things:
If I have a loaf of regular old bread shaped bread (for sandwiches and toast) be it white or 100% wheat or other varieties I will: use the ends as a 'bun' if I've got a homemade hamburger on hand this is done out of nostalgia. use the ends as toast and make a Tiny Style pepper and egg sandwich (which looks nothing like a traditional egg and pepper sandwich and might have some other stuff snuck in like onions or mushrooms or spinach) use the ends if I'm out of bread/buns and I've got lunch meat for one more sandwich (typically toasted and with a sauce/salad dressing/fancy mayo applied - don't typically do that).
If I have a loaf of "more sturdy" bread: use the ends as the base for bruschetta (I will usually use the last couple of slices of the bread as well). use the ends making French Toast (usually with the last couple of slices of the bread) use the ends to make croutons (usually with the last couple of slices of the bread) to go on top of soup. use the ends toasted and then buttered and some garlic powder applied as Tiny Style Garlic Bread done 100% out of nostalgia (not cause it's really good).
If it's fall and/or holiday time: I will use any kind of remaining bread (or buns/bagels/english muffins - what ever is 'bread' and not getting eaten) and any bread ends to make Tiny Style Dressing to go with whatever I've got on the menu plan (ham, chicken, turkey, turkey soup)
If none of the above things are on the menu plan (or I don't have the ability to whip up something to go with it quickly) I will tear up the ends and toss them out for the squirrels and birds.
Read the thread - and I don't typically get a 'swiss cheese' piece of bread heel. I would put such a thing out for the yard critters.

Depends on the bread. A sliced loaf purchased at the grocery for sandwiches, no. Rye bread and some small loaves served at restaurants, yes, slathered with butter.

Sorry, tractor. That isn't the most important topic ever. A more important one is whether the tp should be placed to unroll over or under. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it! The answer is, of course, over. You're welcome.

If it’s homemade bread yes, if it’s store bought, no. I have a favorite bakery that makes the best multigrain bread and I do eat the end of that loaf with butter or toasted.

Yes. I save it until the end, then toast it and put peanut butter.

I was compelled to ask because my kids thought I was weird and couldn’t figure out why I wouldn’t eat it. Apparently they do (must have been raised by wolves). I think the majority opinion proves my point. The heel isn’t worthy of eating, unless you can disguise it in stew, bread crumbs, or under poached eggs.
I was referring to only store bought bread, that homemade or bakery bread is something I have only had a few times in my life, I still live on POW (plain old white) bread from the grocery store.

Now that that’s resolved, what beads do you have in the house?
Right now, we have hamburger rolls, pita, tortillas and a loaf of oat nut bread. In the freezer, I have ciabatta rolls and naan (Costco purchases).

I typically buy whatever is on sale. I don't eat a lot of bread.
