Maybe the start time was earlier than normal and I'm just forgetting that aspect. The others started at 8 and were usually until 1030-11. Maybe it started at 7? 🤷🏻♀️ It's coming back this year so if it isn't canceled I can find out. It was supposed to come for a month here, but they have cut it down to a week, so I'm guessing the compressed their whole schedule. It is supposed to be here in September. I do not have high hopes of being able to see it. If they aren't open on Broadway, not sure why they would be safe here. Yea anything in 2020 is likely. Ours is a month in May so there's a chance.

I don't know Billis... let's talk after But. Its a brilliant piece of writing, score, lyrics, progression, differentiation, story... both overt and subtle. And the original performers... also brilliant. I'm so excited I am fully capable of not personally enjoying "a brilliant piece of writing, score, lyrics, progression, differentiation, story... both overt and subtle." As a straight white middle-aged (at the time) rural living male I went with my ex and a gay couple to see Rent and did not enjoy the show. I could understand why others did. I was happy for them to have their experience of seeing a piece of artistry that spoke to them. It just did nothing for me. I did struggle with my earlier post responding to you stating that my personal thoughts on historical themed shows, musicals, and hip-hop wouldn't matter and your suggestions of what i could do to ... what? ... overcome my personal thoughts on such things. Probably shouldn't have responded.

A question: why watch the show? Is it entertainment? Or educational? If it is entertainment, the fact i don't enjoy the format it uses will negatively matter (to me). If it is educational, the fact that I would need to either pre-read or watch it twice negatively illustrates to me why the presentation style matters (to me). It is art. You don't have to participate. This is not a show everyone will appreciate. LMM geared it towards younger people for a specific reason. The fact that some people outside of the target love it helps with profitability. It is definitely cutting edge and modern. That won't appeal to certain people. Spot on! However I will "participate" by watching it on a platform to which I already subscribe. While "cutting edge and modern" does not generally "appeal" to me these days, I still like to experience things. Kinda like that Mom thing of taking a bite before you say you don't like it.

Probably shouldn't have responded. I was actually thinking that the show would overcome your existing preferences, not that you had to do anything It may not. We shall see. When will you watch it, because I'm excited for you to see it now too. The lyric suggestion I think sprung from thinking that you might miss something on just one run through and I don't want you to miss anything, I like some musicals. I liked Wicked. Honestly I rarely listen to any music, no hip hop or rap artists (although Hamilton is R&B and Jazz too...)... I listen to books. I am ok with the Waitress soundtrack and actually am also excited for LMM In the Heights, but if my daughter wasn't into musicals I might never listen to one. Historical 'hollywood shows'... like war movies... gag, or long epic dramas... nope, not me. So see, those aren't all my favorite things either. But Hamilton. I do love good writing, no matter where its found. I love when a story builds on theme and cycles around and pulls it all together. And this one lets me get loud a little too. (A civics lesson from a slaver, hey neighbor... your debts are paid cause you don't pay for labor...... you don't have the votes, you don't have the votes... you're gonna need congressional approval and you don't have the votes..) ... yes sometimes I have conversations in which I interject Hamilton. I also sometime cue up a song when I'm tutoring social studies. Sigh. I'm going to stop now. Just... its ok if you don't like it. But talk to me after, there may be some bits you manage to like.

I've actually changed my stance on musicals after seeing so many with my season passes. I do much prefer straight plays and am endlessly disappointed they don't tour as much (maybe there's not as many).
But I also haven't seen a lot of the heavier ones. I saw the sequel to phantom and was like this is why I don't like musicals. But escape to margaritaville was just a fun ol time mostly about nothing. I love American in Paris, though it was also partially cuz it had songs I loved that I didn't know were from it.
I honestly have no idea where I'm going with this. Probably just withdrawls since I haven't seen a live show since January (was too sick to go to the feb show and the March was at the end of the month and came) and thinking January will be the earliest I'll see one again. The arts are going to have such a hard time bouncing back from this.

I must be the only theater lover on the planet that did not care for Wicked.
I'm going to get Disney+ for this. Hamilton came to Omaha last year but the tickets were crazy expensive. This is a chance to see it for a lot cheaper.
I've lost track of how many musicals I've been to over the years. If the ticket price is right I'll give anything a go.

The sequel to Phantom is BAD. That was clearly a cash grab.
A review I read called it the worst type of fanfic since 50 shades of grey. I died laughing.

I'm generally pretty meh about theater.
I loved Book of Mormon, Menopause the Musical, and what I've seen of Hamilton. I want peppy music and humor. I've also recently decided I like rap.

The Australian performance that was aired was one of the two.

Love never dies: the phantom returns had an entire Broadway across America season. As I was scrolling through old plays to find the name (saw it back in 2017) - come from away is another amazing musical imo.

Ok, just got done watching Hamilton. Wow, awesome production. I so want to see it live now. I was fortunate in the early 90's to see a live production of "Jesus Christ, Supestar" The cast included some from the original film (Ted Neely as Jesus, Carl Anderson as Judas) and Irene Cara as Mary Magdelene (Fame cast), Dennis DeYoung at Pontius Pilot (STYX lead singer) Great production Was funny tough, I was sitting next to two older ladies and after Ted Neely sang the song in the Garden of Gethsemane (powerful song but definitely 70's hard rock) i was practically crying and the lady next to me said "my that was loud." lol

Oh the Come from Away soundtrack was good. Daughter saw that one live. She got to meet the pilot it’s based on. I guess I do like musicals, just not all musicals.

Snort. That's basically what I had to admit too. The way I describe I tend like musicals where the music adds to it but isn't so woven in that without the music there's no story. ie not the ones that burst into song to have every conversation even when it makes no sense to sing and dance at that moment. Though there's exceptions cuz I don't think escape to margaritaville would be that entertaining without Jimmy buffets songs, but the songs are why you go.
As for seeing Hamilton live - I saw the first or second tour group doing it. We had some people that opened the Chicago version on our tour. They were great and after watching the original cast I honestly can't pick out much differences. I think our king George danced a bit more lol Based on what I saw I'm guessing LMM was making sure that those that didn't get to NYC are seeing practically the same thing.

We were supposed to see Come From Away in the West End in London in May. Needless to say, that didn't happen. Although they say were getting our money back, we haven't seen it yet.

It's so worth it to see. Probably the epitome of you'll laugh, you'll cry. 100% would go see again if I had a chance.

I generally am not a modern broadway musical loving kind of girl. I love all sorts of music. (blues, R&B, funk, etc.) I rather like older hip hop and have waded into "rap". I love poetry (and Shakespeare) and slang/usage of language. I tend to prefer Opera if people are gonna sing a story.
I was skeptical about Hamilton. All the hype (from my theater kids friends and their now HS aged kids). And then I got a ticket due to someone else's misfortune. I went. It was AMAZING. The quick witty lyrics. The way the different styles are used (rather operatic as each scene or character has a "style"). It was so f&$King fast I had a hard time keeping up. The electricity in the house was AMAZING. I had a wonderful time. I wished I had taken the advice of a friend who loved the show and listened to the songs on Amazon before going to the show. I learned all the words after seeing it. When I went a second time 2 years after seeing the first time - I sang along with the rest of the audience. Hamilton has a lot of layers and it seems to work for a lot of people with different backgrounds and tastes.
It's entertainment with alot of "history". For those seeing it the first time - I'd recommend taking a listen to the soundtrack - even if you just kind of skim over the songs.... It will help get your brain on the right wavelength to follow along.
Damn... now I'm singing Dear Theadosia... damn.. go ahead and find it on youtube...
here try this: Helpless

Posted earlier on the wrong thread, but we subscribed to Disney+ last night and watched it. I had tried to get tickets to see it with the original cast on Broadway and the cheap seats then on Stub Hub were $750 each. 😫
We LOVED it!!! Quick, witty, intelligent, funny, informative, historical but current...
Now I’ll have to buy the soundtrack. And now I’m in love with Leslie Odom, Jr.
I should add that we do enjoy musicals and have seen a few over the years: Jesus Christ Superstar (several times since the 70s), Godspell, Phantom of the Opera, Into the Woods, A Little Night Music, Aspects of Love, Les Miserables, and more that escape me since I’m not yet caffeinated. Just before the pandemic hit, I was actively searching for tickets to see Jesus Christ Superstar at the Kennedy Center in the middle of April since the kids haven’t seen it yet (but are very familiar with the soundtrack).

I will give it a go for the sake of cultural literacy but: 1) not fond of Broadway/Hollywood "historical" shows 2) not fond of musicals 3) hip-hop isn't a style of music I enjoy Regarding #3, neither is my husband, but he enjoyed seeing it. However, he enjoys musicals as whole.

I think if it was my first time hearing it, I might turn on the captions. The lyrics are brilliant, but often very fast and hard to catch all the nuances on first listening. We’ve started watching most shows with the captions on. It’s odd how much easier it makes it!

If you have an unlimited plan on Verizon Wireless, you can sign up for a year of Disney+ for free.
