Daughter needs a negative test to go back to school... was advised results are 2 weeks out so plan accordingly. 2 weeks out is essentially worthless. DBF’s oldest got tested a couple of weeks ago, as required by the college she will be attending this fall. That made no sense to me. Getting tested a month before they come to campus, even if they test negative, that doesn’t mean they won’t be positive when they arrive a MONTH later.

Well, our governor has upped the precautions here. Masks for everyone, with a couple of exceptions. And, companies are scrambling to figure out how to be in compliance. DH has been required to wear a mask at his place of employment for awhile, so it won't affect him personally.

I was considering going to the CB farmer's market and then we drove by it yesterday on the way to pick up dinner. Yeah no. Not a single person wearing masks, nobody six feet apart and they still got it crammed onto a side street. I could stand in one spot, extend my arms and be able to touch two booths.
Which is stupid because they have AN ENTIRE PUBLIC PARK right there where they could spread out and be six feet apart from each other. If they have permission to use the street I am sure permission could be extended to using the park itself.
Ugh. You know it's sad when even your 10 year old child looks at the situation and goes "Nope" but grown ass adults can't see it.
Might try the Omaha Farmer's Market depending on how hot/humid it is once I stop working Saturdays. They are enforcing six feet apart, masks and they moved the market to one of the parking garage floors so the vendors can be spaced out.
I am getting tired of both states to be honest. Our rugged pioneer spirit and basking in Washington's neon orange glow is not going to get us out of this. I think it's going to be capitalism that gets us out because they can't tell private businesses what policies they are allowed to set.

Her school said that you need to 'quarantine in a non high risk state for two weeks" before coming to campus... but I'm still trying to get confirmation on if that means they need to be IN a non high risk state (we are) or it means we all need to SAH completely for two weeks before she goes?
I do think the university has good plans in place, and its in NY with leadership I trust, but honestly I wish she'd just stay home at this point.

My state is still full of folks insisting that cases are rising because everyone comes back positive (you know the hoax and all) and I also see a few people claiming now that they know people that got in line for a test then left without taking it and got calls weeks later saying they were positive (which I just don't believe is true). These people see no reason to not do whatever they feel like whenever they feel like.
I'm about to make a large grocery run for basics so that I can stay out of stores if schools really do start back up in my county on August 3rd. I'm worried about hospital capacity in Georgia.

Someone told me this doesn't happen in the US when it was happening in NY... Because the hospitals in TX are overrun, they are now sending "too sick" people home to die. COVID-19 patients will be ‘sent home to die’ if deemed too sick, Texas county says "The county has been forced to form what is being compared to a so-called “death panel.” A county health board – which governs Starr Memorial – is set to authorize critical care guidelines Thursday that will help medical workers determine ways to allocate scarce medical resources on patients with the best chance to survive. A committee will deem which COVID-19 patients are likely to die and send them home with family, Jose Vasquez, the county health authority, said during a news conference Tuesday.“The situation is desperate,” Vasquez said. “We cannot continue functioning in the Starr County Memorial Hospital nor in our county in the way that things are going. The numbers are staggering.”" www.star-telegram.com/news/coronavirus/article244443257.html

When I looked into it before, it wasn't true, but now I can't find where I got that information, and it pisses me off that I need to do so much work to fight the misinformation everywhere. Maybe I'm just not as smart as I used to be, because I can't remember all this crap any more.

How is a positive test not a case? Same person. I am clearly not smart enough to be a conservative. People are dying, hospitals are full, and this is what we want to argue about. Idiocracy apparently really was a true movie.

My state Illinois is opening slowly. Some things have turned back although. I hope we do not have to wear masks for a few years? That would be a disappointment.

Well, like yesterday someone was arguing that a stroke in a Covid positive person should be a stroke, not covid as cause of death... I asked what about the fact that Covid can cause heart attacks and strokes due to blood thickening and clots... but that was fake news and I was wrong again.

Just read that my county (Maryland) is now down to 75 cases/day from several hundred. We are rigorously in phase 2. Schools will open virtually to start, with a plan to change that should evidence support it. The gross majority of cases (about 75%) now are Latinx, although the population as a whole is 20% Latinx. The county government is making some changes: distributing CARES funding to prevent evictions; shoring up testing availability which isn't enough and speed of results, which still lag far too much, and enhancing communications across languages and communities.
Me, I'm used to going masked every where and am delighted when I find my King Arthur's flour. We've eaten in a restaurant once in the past few months, where we were one of only two parties in a multi-room establishment. We don't go out, really. DH drives and I run in to do errands where needed. I've stopped expecting much as in when shows, etc. will open.
I still hope to get to Maine maybe in September if they lift the quarantine requirement. I do miss summer breaks and seeing my family. DS is in Manhattan and siblings and their families are in Massachusetts.

We will be wearing a mask for the foreseeable future. We need to understand that. When we get enough doses of an effective vaccine, that will change. If we have to wait for herd immunity, it would be 2 years at leat.

My sister, who tested positive, is convinced she was a false positive. She was being monitored by the county health nurse who told her she was wrong. So she called her doctor's office and they told her she was wrong. She still wonders.....

False negatives are far more common for any test than a false positive. False positives can happen but considering that a false positive in this case means you got off damn lucky and the worst you had to do was stay in your house for two weeks is it really something worth generating conspiracy theories over?

If it is a false positive, it fits the narrative. You are a science person, so you understand the nature of what is going on. People want to believe this is all a hoax, so they can go back to their life, and can continue to think their world view is correct. Being faced with the converse is too difficult, so they refuse to accept what they see and hear. Not until they are directly affected by someone's serious illness or death will they have to face that they are wrong.

And I just need everyone to know that today I made a campaign contribution for Amy McGrath who is running against Mitch McConnel for Kentucky senate. I'm currently unemployed and live in Georgia, but I hate Mitch McConnel that much.
She's a total badass retired Lt. Col Marine fighter pilot that broke a lot of barriers for women in the military.

Unfortunately, they believe it when it is too late to do anything, and have helped add to others suffering. I have run out of empathy for that group though.

If I got a positive result for COVID and then found out it was a false positive I wouldn't be pissed. I'd be out buying stacks of Megaball lottery tickets because holy crap would I be a freaking lucky bug.

It is so sad that something that may have been preventable if people took a modicum of care happens. Her family will feel her loss for some time, espescially if she was not old or sick. I get angry when I hear stories like this as well. Why won't people listen to us. Such a waste
