I doubt that only people with symptoms are getting tested. Nursing home staff must be tested twice a week in NY. Those that were informed they'd been exposed to a newly identified case should get tested (contact tracing). People going for elective medical procedures get pretested. All sorts of reasons a person without symptoms might get tested. Given most don't expect to be positive (workers, medical procedures, etc), the positivity rate should be low, or you are sniffing out cases in the community. Cuomo just announced guidelines for reopening NY schools in September. They want rates under 5% for a 14 day average sometime in the August 1-7 week. After that, looking at 7 day averages. If at any time it gets to 9%, hard stop. Our current rates in the region fluctuate daily from 0.9 to 1.9%. Interesting. NJ nursing staff has to be tested once a week, although the very first round was twice in one week. I think Cuomo is sensitive about the nursing home deaths due to his order to send covid patients back to the nursing homes (since changed). He said he wanted staff tested more frequently than once per week, due to lag time, so they wouldn't be working a week or more before a positive test result came back.

Thing is, without a NATIONAL plan, we have people traveling all over the place and spreading their germs.
Disney World opened. During a pandemic...
People can't wear masks in church? Because they are too special?
It's insanity.

Our results currently come back now in a day or two. I was just looking at worldometer on testing rates. There's some serious variability. Rhode Island is just above NY for the top spot. Louisiana is actually third per capita. Arizona is roughly half of NY's rate. Arizona may not be regularly testing medical workers.

Mayor just announced Houston positivity rate at 26.8%. You have no idea how much I truly wish that I could believe this was a lie, a hoax, a political game, as so many in my community are saying. But I don't believe it is any of those; my brain and my personal observances say it's true. pulmonarymd , you said it first and said it best, Texas is screwed. And people are having covid parties to try and "prove" it is a hoax. Someone in San Antonio just died from attending one. I don't know how we stop people from just flat out being dumb asses, which seems to be where many cases are coming from. I am hoping with the mask mandate that at least the blatant idiots will not pass it on to unsuspecting people. The other big problem are churches. They do not fall under the mask mandate...just stupid. Both the church where I currently worship, and the one where we formerly attended, have been online only for many weeks. They did offer in-person worship for 1 or 2 week, reservation only and mask required, but shut down again

NY has set up a dashboard with all sorts of graphs and metrics, by region or by county, lots to explore. Forward NY Dashboard

In my county, over the past two weeks, 3% of the positive cases have occurred in kids 0-9. Kids 10-19 had a 9% positive rate.

What's really bothered me in my area is that it's hard to find historical data. I have to get on the site I use daily and make my own graphs. And, as I noted before, it's one thing to tout the 5.6 total rate for all tests to date. The picture changes when you see weekly %positive rates decrease to as low as 1.8%, then start to increase again, currently up to 9.5%.

I was poking around all the different options, exploring, and realized I couldn't find the historical death count data, daily graphs. I'm always confused when Cuomo proudly says only 7 people died today, the lowest since March x, and then on Worldometers the count is 43! Over and over. Obviously Worldometers is adding data from somewhere else, but ?!? The NY Forward site had death data, but it wasn't daily, it was on the totals, and broke it down by ethnicity, by age, by comorbidity, etc. The comorbidity was interesting: 90% of deaths had at least one comorbidity.

I've been keeping an eye on what happens to FPUC since it will end for me at the end of next week. I've read articles that confirmed what I already knew. Trump and certain Governors, like GA gov Kemp, are forcing the economy to stay open because they are about to run out of unemployment funds. When I applied for benefits in mid May I qualified for 26 weeks. I just read that folks applying now only qualify for 18. But the article stated there was something like a couple hundred thousand folks in GA that have already been unemployed more than 27 weeks. The labor commissioner said they will have to cut benefits either the length of time qualifying or the amount you can get. The maximum is already a piddly 365 a week. I don't know how they think people will survive. There is already a level of unrest in Georgia, and this will not make things better.

Wonder what the rate of those comorbidities (high BP obesity, etc.) is in the general population. Probably not 90%, though. I have none of the comorbidities but I'm still nervous over what I read about the lingering health effects for some survivors. Death isn't the only bad outcome.

My niece who is surgical nurse was exposed again by one of the patients. Don't know if it was emergency surgery or if they tested positive after surgery. Before my procedure, I had to be tested and be negative.
So she was almost to the end of 14 days from her exposure to her mother. So she has another 14 days to go now.
I am still surprised that a hospital is letting her work and telling her to check her temperature twice a day. She was told as long as she has no symptoms to keep coming to work. We keep getting told that this county has a lot of asymptomatic people who have tested positive.

If every healthcare worker who is exposed has to quarantine, you wind up in a situation like NYC, where you start to run out of qualified bodies. It is quite the problem for us. We are screened daily, and can usually be trusted to do the right thing. But the guidelines for healthcare workers changed after the disaster in NYC

So that is why she is getting screened and her dad was not allowed to return to H & R Block this season because of his exposure?
After the exposure to her mother, she and BIL were the only ones who did not get tested. The county health nurse told my sister to assume he has it.

The reporting from the hospitals could be lagging. They report to the state several days late but it is reported on that day as a total. So, that particular day there were 7 people but the hospitals reported another 36 (43-7) that actually happened over the previous several weeks. It can only be seen when you can see historical daily counts after it is distributed to the actual date.

Oregon has reported deaths of people in their 20s-40s with no preexisting conditions.

I don't know how they think people will survive. There is already a level of unrest in Georgia, and this will not make things better. I applied for UI in OR in March. Every month or so I get an e-mail from them letting me know my application is still in the queue and not to contact them. It's the middle of July. That's 4 months and still no action. My son's GF applied at the same time. They denied her since she moved from CA to OR and had 2018 income in CA. They told her to apply in CA and CA has not yet processed her claim. She had no income at all until her business re-opened, but it's at risk of a new closure. If it closes, she still has no access to UI after 4 months of BS. The Feds could issue stimulus so people could pay their bills and stay home safely. They want to force people to work so they don't have to pay UI, regardless of if it's safe, which it's not. www.kgw.com/article/news/local/many-self-employed-oregonians-still-waiting-on-unemployment-benefits-months-into-the-pandemic/283-e29f324e-7dae-41d6-ad10-1ea8c29e9a88

My state has had free testing since April. Everybody I know who is had so much as a sniffle has gotten tested and had the results within 1 to 2 days.. Both the state and county government have websites that show number of tests, the number of positives, number of hospitalizations the number of deaths by day. They also show case rate and hospitalization rate by age group and demographics. Next year, they’re gonna be spending more on education than they did this year, because they can dip into a rather large rainy day fund. And I’m getting all of this while paying a fraction of the local taxes that would be paying on the East Coast. This is what happens when you have competent local government.
When I look at the tragedy unfolding in places that had just as much time to prepare as we did, I just shake my head. No wonder they are fixating on with the feds are doing. It never occurred to them to think that the locals can handle this.

Iowa now a deeply red state and there are TONS of people around here who think it is a hoax. I am in the minority when I go to stores wearing a mask. Omaha is the same way and Nebraska is as red as blood. Both states are deep up Trump's ass. They refuse to mandate masks and never actually ordered a state wide shut down. They parrot his lines of logic as to why they couldn't possibly do all those things and the only reason we have so many more cases is because they have done more testing. So yeah I don't think red states get a prize for handling the virus. I think we got "lucky" in the fact that so much of both states are rural it took the virus more time to build up steam compared to more densely populated states. That has since quickly changed. A friend of mine joked that Iowa and Nebraska will never see a second wave because we won't exit the first one.

When Tweety Amin sides with game show hosts instead of scientists and doctors, saying "It's no big deal, it's only going up because of increased testing, and it's going to disappear like magic"....
you're screwed. Bigly.

How do people follow Trump and hang on his every word (lie) knowing who he is?
How do they watch State (Faux) TV and choose to believe everything they say?
I'd guess the people living in Nazi Germany probably said the same thing. Specifically the Jewish people...
When will the response change? I don't really have a ton of faith that it will. If Trump wins in November, then "change" is simply more of our population 6 feet under.

If you think that incompetent government or an ignorant, self-destructive population or a red state thing, you really need to get out more. You’re right that there are certain advantages to having a pandemic response handled by a competent federal government. But that’s going to mean giving a lot more power to the feds, and whatever Yahoo happens to be sitting in the oval office. States, counties, and cities won’t have the option of dragging their feet when the Feds say to shut down or deciding when they’re ready to open up. If the feds are going to be responsible for doling out PPE and other equipment, then they’re gonna need to have the power to prevent certain local governments from gobbling it all up. That could mean making it illegal for a state to buy more than X number of Y products. Are you going to be OK with this?

States, counties, and cities won’t have the option of dragging their feet when the Feds say to shut down or deciding when they’re ready to open up. If the feds are going to be responsible for doling out PPE and other equipment, then they’re gonna need to have the power to prevent certain local governments from gobbling it all up. That could mean making it illegal for a state to buy more than X number of Y products. Are you going to be OK with this? You have seen what an incompetent federal response has led too. Look at our curve compared to the curve in the EU. I know which one I prefer. And you continue to seem to believe that just because your area has handled this well that you are safe from the disaster. You aren't, because unless neighboring areas suppress it too, all it takes is one family to have a party, the sick person go to church, and you are now facing a disaster.

Then there's those of us in seriously Red areas that still think this is a hoax and no worse than the flu and the local government balks at the Governor's mandates and refuses to back them. In some areas, no, the local's can't be trusted to handle this. There should be Federal mandates. Especially since people travel freely in this country. We have several mayors that are trying to handle issues in Georgia responsibly and the governor is starting twitter wars and saying that no one can enforce more restrictive guidelines than what he has put out. At the beginning of this he was saying that he would not force masks or other restrictions because what applied in one place might not in another so they wanted more local decisions to be made. But he's taken all that back now right when everything is going to h3ll and cases are spiking all over the place. All the governor is worried about is republicans being re-elected, and that this turned out not to be the hoax they claimed it was and the bad decisions he made in the beginning are coming back to bite him. I just pray that the soccer moms remember this at election time.

DH and I were just talking...I suppose the best we can do is try to find trusted sources of information and make decisions that we are comfortable with.
