Did she pick Rose Hulman? South Carolina.

It's ABET certified. Prestige names don't mean as much in engineering and she'll have so much money for graduate school now.

Mixed bag for DH's online summer classes, so far in week one. Had a pretty good turnout for live online lessons, but some IT glitches. Today was calling parents of students who were no-shows. One student promptly sent him a message: Leave me alone! Just learned that ALL of the copies of the book they will be reading were delivered to ONE house. Google classroom, though, ugh. Half of his rants are about how it works (or doesn't work), can't find student assignments, can't access those he can find, can't score those he can access, parents want to be in the loop (how did that work in my experience w/ DS5), can you share ...? You think you know how part of it works, but another part works differently (say, docs vs forms for assignments).

I don't know many schools that pay out when awards are above costs, but maybe. I don't understand the list or purpose at all though. Unless it was as an internet experiment. If I have a gifted student who is interested in chemical engineering... that is not the list I would have made of best schools. If I was only interested in the absolute cheapest to me (as apparently was the case) then why even bother with 20 some schools when there is no way that they are going to compete with some of the others in terms of aide? It seemed way more complicated than it had to be.

It seemed way more complicated than it had to be. But how do you KNOW which ones you're going to get the scholarships at without first applying? Except for Princeton they didn't apply to any that they weren't sure there was at least a shot at big merit. South Carolina wasn't even on his original list. A lot were added later by suggestions from other posters. If I remember correctly he gave his daughter the option of any of the schools up to Johns Hopkins. The atmosphere at Rose Hulman did not appeal to her. She did not want the "live and breathe engineering" college experience and was an athlete that wanted to be involved in sports and other things. Miami-Ohio was where she was leaning as well because she could play D1 hockey with them.
From what I gathered from the thread they are paying out the extra, but it will be taxable income to her. I don't remember all the details because it's been a while since I read it. I do know UMN would pay DS 3K to attend this Fall if he chose to stay at home. I verified that with the FA office a few weeks ago when we were mulling it over (actually I was mulling it over...he is set on going, so it's a non-issue). Reason being was cost of attendance included a bunch of non-billable items like personal expenses and travel and if he was at home there was a room and board line item for living at home.

You KNOW that 12 K a year in state South Carolina is going to come in lower than Northeastern.
But fine. If you want to apply to 27 schools go ahead. But you don't HAVE to do that. Its disingenuous to suggest that the whole thing HAS to be this complicated. And honestly if you target schools, and form personal relationships (think his John Hopkins experience) the results can be even better than blasting dozens. But ok. I really don't have enough invested in this to keep arguing. Its not how I would have done it. Whatever they wanted to do, fine with them. It was a lot of work to end up at South Carolina for chemical engineering is all I'm saying. That path could have been much shorter and less complicated.
I will still say every way that it doesn't have to be as complicated as they made it.

He's in CA. South Carolina had a 48K sticker.
Cheapest option without actually applying to find out would be living at home and going to Irvine for 9K/year, but if she's been living away from home for the past 4 years already, she probably wouldn't be really thrilled with living at home for college. The other in-state California schools were coming in at 25-29K/year.

Definitely not efficient, but it sounds like quite a learning process. I was wondering what external factors were coming into consideration and glad she’s giving some thought to what kind of college experience she wants. Baltimore’s not much of a college town (I personally wouldn’t go to Johns Hopkins after the MOOC I just took from there, which may be the smallest bit unfair And when applying to grad school it’s often just as good a gameplan to be the standout student from a less competitive school as an average one from a top echelon school. Frankly I might be more worried about the culture shock of moving from liberal SoCal to deep red South Carolina. Anyway, I have to figure someone with that level of energy and attention to detail has optimized everything she can think of. Best of luck to her.

Well, as if there isn't enough going on, Trump is threatening universities via twitter. (asking the dept of treasury to look at tax exempt status). Because what we all need now is more stress-inducing noise.

Good, take away everyone's tax exempt status, that includes churches. Pretty sure he is unable to do that, and since the Senate has decided their only job s confirming judges, I do not see them taking this up.

RIT finally released their comprehensive plan and I finally got to read it this morning. It does make me feel much better. They have made a lot of improvements. Their mask and distancing rules are comprehensive. They didn't specifically mention special interest housing, but I think based on the rules daughter will not be going into Art House for the time being (only one guest per resident, all masked and distanced, which frankly is going to be a challenge with just residents...)
They are also doing things like wastewater monitoring, and have QR codes around campus and buildings that students have to hit as they move around to aid contact tracing. Every student has to use the daily health screening app to answer questions before they can come onto campus/leave residence halls. etc.
Classes meet in person, blended asynchronous, blended synchronous, or online, depending on class and current stage of potential risk which is designated by 4 color stages...

They do have to get tested before they go back, and now I'm wondering when to do that? You want it to be timely and accurate, but also I've heard there is a significant delay in getting results right now... She's to move back on the 15th, but an affiliate apartment so I don't know if she needs results by that date or by first day of classes which is the 19th.

The only school I know of personally that is requiring testing is staggering move-in over a couple weeks and doing the testing themselves. They're claiming they'll be able to get results in 24 hours or less. If the students aren't the first roommate in their dorm they have to stay off campus or in the isolation dorm for the night until the results come back.

RIT said if you come from a state with a lot of community spread you get a second test when you get there... but that shouldn't be us.

There's been news locally that testing supplies are low again, slowing down results. NY has been doing LOTS of ongoing testing, to maintain required numbers of tests per capita. One member of congress was complaining that the federal govt was diverting our supplies elsewhere. That might interfere with back to school testing (DH and I were speculating about whether that might be a thing).
In other news, the college we both graduated from announced big cuts in staffing due to $ problems: 95 staff, including 26 professors. They were also cutting 6 or 7 9 majors; DS4 laughed when they mentioned Religious Studies (it's a Jesuit institution).

Yup to the cuts.
We've had 5% cut. They are now planing on an additional 12-15% cut. I would expect another round of cuts this FY on top of the 12-15%.

And the gap between the well to do and the middle class will grow larger. The well to do can continue to send their children to private schools, and the good, affordable public’s have to cut programs. God forbid we do anything to help those who aren’t rich. We have forgotten what “made America great”.

DS got his room assignment today. They put him in a suite which kind of surprised me since we didn't request one, but he did request to be in a particular LLC and I guess I just assumed they were all double rooms. For covid spread it's probably better sharing with only 3 others, but I'm also thinking...four 18 year old guys...one bathroom...nobody cleaning it but them.

When my DS was in the dorms, someone would poop in the shower and clog it up so that water backed up. I mentioned it somewhere and apparently that kind of stuff is common - so 4 guys one bathroom is still better than one big bathroom for the whole floor.

When I had a suite like that, there was a cleaning lady. I can't remember how often they came. We touched up in between but she did the heavy scrubbing and mopping.

From what I'm seeing, they have to clean it themselves. So, I guess his packing list needs to include Pine Sol and toilet paper.

False alarm on the dorm. There are two rooms with the same number on that floor, only one, (the suite) has a letter in front of it, that we apparently ignored when looking at the campus floorplan. He's in a regular double right across the hall from a community, janitor serviced bath. I really didn't like the idea of paying more for that set up, so I'm happy. Now we just need to worry about poop in the shower. This is the nerdy dorm though, so maybe we won't get that? It's all science and engineering and nursing students.

My friend just got this: ?? The more last minute changes I hear about the more I worry this is all going to be a shot show. My friend thinks, and has heard others posit, that the university figures the experiment will be over in three weeks and everyone home, so the last groups will never move in?

I'd guess 3 weeks is about right.
There's no way on God's green earth schools will go back and stay open.
