Took arms against the tree line today. Every year the wild blackberry bushes and honeysuckle vine creeps from the empty wooded lot behind us and into our yard. Took a rake and a a long handled branch clipper (to stay as far from those thorny blackberry bastards) and battled for a couple hours, getting a depressingly small section of tree line.
Taking a week off for vacation in a couple weeks and since I still can’t go anywhere guess I get to battle more then.

There won't be anything done in the garden today for sure. It's raining. It's gonna rain all day and probably tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow ad infinitum

It rained all weekend and half of my backyard is flooded. Not working out there today. Well I may cut the Butterfly bush back.

Never mind the "for sure" stuff about not doing anything in the garden. There's been a short break in the rain so I went out intending to scoop Mollydog poop and ended up doing that and then pulled a big weed. Spied another one and another one and sort of kept on going until a bunch of weeding got done By the time the rain is gone and the sun comes out again some day, the darned things will have just sprouted again somewhere else. Stupid things. I pull them up by the roots except that the root grow underground for what seems like miles. Sigh.

@missrigby Pokeweed? I had a big crop that got to 8'. Big underground roots and tubers. Impossible to dig out. Finally had a garden guy cut it all back and I would spray Roundup on the shoots as they emerged. Kept it down last year, so no berries/seeds. Will continue that probably for years.

ken a.k.a OMK Not pokeweed. I don't know what it's called; "nuisance" would be a good name

I've been out and done poop-scooping duty, and while I was out pulled a few weeds and cut the expired daffodils. Expired. That is, they died after being cheery for a few weeks. I think they were waiting for more to bloom. Heaven knows there are dozens of them with their little daffodil faces turned up and looking for the sun. They probably won't see it today but maybe tomorrow.
While I was doing a turn around the south 40, I noticed a lot of perennials poking up through the ground and some sprouting new leaves from the stalks that were cut back last fall.
18 days until spring! 12 more until DST. Woohoo.

I have some kind of grass that invades the flower beds by underground rhizomes. Cuts through the strongest most leg paper and shoves aside the phlox and other ground cover I use to tru to keep it out. I got a special herbicide that is supposed to kill it but not the other plants, but I’m worried it might kill you he ornamental pink mully grass, which I love. Might try a bit this year on the part that’s far away from the ornamentals.

The sun is out! The sun is out! I can't begin to explain how excited and happy I feel when I wake up and the sun is shining. Of course in 11 days, it will still be darkish when I get up, but I'll know that the sun will be up if the sky is clear. And in just 17 more days it will officially be spring. Spring, y'all!
Coffee on the patio was a tad chilly because it's only 37. Our high temp today will only be 60, but that will feel positively tropical compared to yesterday's 49.
All the little sprouts in the foil pans are coming along nicely. There are more daffodils in bloom this morning.

Transplanted the rest of the early seedlings. Well I left a few for a few more days to see if anything happens but I’m guessing not. I got very little swamp milkweed, just a lot of common milkweed. Might try a few more on the next go around. We’ll see. I also messed up somewhere last time because I swear I transplanted at John wart and pennyroyal last time but all their spaces were full so I guess some things must be mislabel, sigh.
Out to clean up a few beds this afternoon if it keeps getting warm and sunny.

I'm done for the day. Dug up a lot of weeds and lots of monkey grass that wants to spread. I don't want the monkey grass to spread and don't understand what part of "don't spread" it doesn't get.
My peonies haven't sprouted yet. I'm sure they usually poke through the dirt by now. Hope they didn't die. And some lilies that I transplanted last fall aren't sprouting, either. Maybe I'm just overanxious and dis-remembering how early I see sprouts.

More flowers are sprouting! I’m not sure what they are, but I guess I’ll find out soon.

Gardening duty (pulling weeds) is done for the day because I started earlier than usual and have already put in about three hours. Tomorrow's another sunny day. Not as warm but sunny. ETA: Omigosh! Just checked the NOAA site and if they're to be believed, there's no rain in sight for a week. Woohoo and stuff. And still no sign of peonies

It looks to me like the peonies have abandoned ship. Breaks my heart but if they left maybe it's because our winter was so rainy. I do have a bumper crop of weeds, though.

Amaryllis bulbs are definitely toast, or actually mush. This hurts b/c that variety is $20.95/bulb Oh well, maybe try to find something else for those pots. Or not. Tomorrow is the day I'll move the empty pots to the back of the property, DH will remove and relocate a lot of stones bordering a long bed to the back of the property, and I'll get the bags of soil and whack down the dead hibiscus. Lather, rinse, repeat for Saturday and Sunday.

My son just told me today that I can’t try with the herb plants again this year because the ones I had last year died “horrible deaths”. What part of “You’re not the boss of me” does he not understand?!

We are getting a "hard freeze" tonight. I just learned that is 4 or more consecutive hours of 28° or below.

What part of “You’re not the boss of me” does he not understand?! Tell him you practice Darwin gardening. That’s what I do. Only the strong survive my gardening attempts. The strong and the weeds. And sometimes I just let the weeds remain- my front flowerbed is full of wild violets that I pass off as ground cover.

Darwin gardening! That's it, by Jove. I knew there was a name for it. I, too, practice Darwin gardening.
Not feeling like myself today so no gardening. I don't know who I feel like, but not myself. Maybe later.

Finished clearing out the former lantana bed and both veggie beds, plus miscellaneous dead plant pulling. I went to the local garden center and got 5 bags of bed soil. DH came along and bought a new pair of branch trimmers (we call them long loppers) and, of course, chose the Swiss-made ones for $105.99 plus tax. Dang, even the wooden handled ones by Corona were $66.99. We are putting the Swiss trimmers in our will.
The Mexican plum tree has more blooms on it today so I'm hoping for a good production. Not edible by humans, but beloved by birds and critters.
Tomorrow is drench the roses with an organic liquid and spread the dirt. Sunday is plant the bush beans.
I'm going to post my leftover organic citrus, tomato and hibiscus fertilizers on Nextdoor for free.

We may get frost tonight. Or not. It's cloudy with no rain expected so I don't think it's gonna get cold enough for frost, but the babies are covered anyway.
Tomorrow night and Sunday night? Another story. I'll be surprised if we don't get a hard frost. And yes, the babies will be under their frost blanket.

Not all crops start in the fields as seeds.

The first batch died because I moved them off the deck when we called ourselves refinishing the deck. I put them near the back door, which we rarely use, and they were literally out of sight from all the places I usually am when outside. Notice I said “the first batch”. DS took me to buy some replacements, I’m pleading memory issues regarding why those died. I did manage to keep the Rosemary healthy and pretty, Mister killed it, trying to take care of it lol. If nothing else, I will replace that one. It was nice snipping a piece off to cook with fresh rosemary sometimes.

It got to 4 X 6 size so I decided to devote that footprint to something else. DH had to dig up the rootball; the trunk at ground was the size of my wrist. I used it for chicken and lamb, but not enough to justify the space it occupied. It was a huge draw for bees so I'm looking to replace it with another pollinator plant.
