On top of the fridge? Seriously, it's nice and warm up there. Duh. Why didn't I think of that? A great big thank you!

oped Wow...that's a lot of green things growing. Are they all veggies, all flowers, or a combo? My gomphrena and thyme are doing nicely, and it looks like the blue fescue (an ornamental grass) is about ready to poke through the dirt. It was sunny yesterday so I put them outside for a couple of hours. The seed store send me an email saying that I could order the baptisia seeds, and the globe thistle will be shipped separately as soon as it's available at no extra shipping charge. Yay. They also said that they don't think gas plant is going to be available at all this year. Not yay I still have lots of seed packets and need to get more foil pans to plant them but have no idea where to put them. Right now the two that have already been seeded sit on the kitchen floor. When the covers are ready to come off, I dunno where they'll go because there's just no room and can't be left uncovered on the floor or Maggiecat will surely be digging in them. Twenty-six days until spring! Twenty days until DST! Life is good I never heard of a gas plant so I had to look it up. Very pretty. But I have to ask - did you ever go outside and strike a match right over it to see if you could ignite the volatiles? I assume that’s why it’s called gas plant?

happyhoix I've never tried it but understand that there's a strong fragrance that can be ignited.

It's going to b warm (70) and sunny today so I'm going to try to light a fire under my como se llama and work in the garden. I think one of the reasons I can do so little anymore is because I do so little. That is, moving around more makes me more around more...energy begets energy? My little seedlings are thriving. Yay. If DD needs to go out today, I'm going to ask to go along and stop at the dollar store for more foil pans for planting. And put them on top of the fridge like stillmovingforward suggested. ETA: It just occurred to me that what I was thinking of is "a body in motion stays in motion" and "a body at rest stays at rest." Maybe I really did learn something in physics class?

After a daytime high of 16 degrees last Tuesday, today's high temperature will be 66 degrees. Record high temperature for today's date is 79 degrees (2015).

Okay, then. Seeds for two kinds of zinnias and two kinds of bachelor buttons planted in the foil pans I got this morning.
I had a genius idea when I remembered that a few years ago I bought a frost blanket for protecting seedlings in the ground. Why not put a couple of thicknesses on the wicker love seat with enough to lay over the top at night? Of course! So I did. Pretty sure it will work. When it rains or if we have a truly cold spell with ice and/or sNOw, I'll have to move them to the top of the fridge. In the meantime...
Did some weeding, but that got boring real quick. Ugh. And put a second coat of stain on the park bench that's in DD's front yard.

Let us then be up and doing with a heart for any fate! Look alive! The sun's out, and it's gonna be 73 here today. This is yo-yo season. Warm and sunny for a couple of days, then cool and overcast for a couple of days, throw in a few days of downright cold and rain... There's more weeding to be done today after we get home from the vaccine appointments. Wouldn't it be great if our flowers and veggies grew as well and as fast as weeds do? The blue fescue that I planted last week is starting to sprout. The seeds that were planted yesterday aren't. Maybe it's too soon? As soon as the sun moves enough to shine on the four new pans of seeds, the insulating blanket will come off for the day. ETA: Okay, the seed trays have had the insulating blanket removed and are waiting to sprout and turn their little faces up to the sun. The seed trays that have already sprouted are happily sunbathing on a patio table. I love warm weather. Not hot. Warm. Twenty-four days until spring!

It was very warm and sunny today, and what did I do? Absoeffinglutely nothing. I'm ashamed. Do I look ashamed? How about now? Most of the morning was spent getting the vaccine. Then DD insisted that I go with her to our favorite antique shop when she dropped DGD off to meet her latest new BF. Two hours. What? I did enjoy poking around in the shop, though. By the time we got back home it was already 4. Tomorrow is another day and while it won't be as warm as today, it'll still be 70 and sunny for most of the day. I will do productive things tomorrow. All the new seed trays seem to be happy in the sunshine. Right now they're tucked up for the night.

I read my fav gardening guru's blog on helping St. Augustine grass recover. It's going to take a lot of $$ and a lot of physical effort. That's okay. A neighbor keeps demanding I trim my roses TODAY. They are not floribunda, I can trim them any time of the year. Why would I trim something that is very likely root dead and will have to be dug out? DH and I are fighting over a new vision for the yard; I'm definitely leaning to even lower maintenance than what we have but not toward his sterile rock-scape and boring shrubs. Besides, we are at max non-permeable surface and the city will fine us if we add more rock.

If the lord's willing and the creeks don't rise, like we used to say in Texas, I'll get out and do stuff in the garden. Right now I'm trying to make my Self wake up.

We spent a warm and even somewhat sweaty hour pulling up and cutting back. Roses are fine-dead leaves are dropping off and new ones emerging already. DH found healthy tubers down in the soil after he trimmed off the dead fronds so it will be back. I pulled up all the mushy succulents. I'm leaving the amaryllis bulbs for a few days based on a local garden guru, but the squish and the smell says they are rotted. Cut down the collards, I'll get the shovel tomorrow to dig out the roots. I still can't get over the delicate looking thyme in a pot being happy as a clam at 13 degrees. Nature is strange sometimes.

I didn't post yesterday because...once again I did absolutely nothing in the garden on Thursday when it was sunny and 77. Yesterday was overcast, rainy and cold so nothing got done then, either. Today and tomorrow are supposed to be overcast and very warm before turning cold again next week. Can we say it's yo-yo season?
If my Self can light a fire under me, some prep work might get done for the new beds that I want to create for all the seeds that are planted in the foil pans.

Even if you don't accomplish anything, I'm ordering you to sit in the 🌞 for at least 20 mins each day. It's the same order I've given myself as I can feel the depression creeping in during this impossible pandemic. You have the advantage of warm temps while stl is flipping between 30 and 50.

Yay me. My Self did get a fire lit under me, and one new and large flower bed is prepped. This one ties together two others that had a big space of ground cover between. It was a lot of work but now ready for planting when the seedlings are big enough and the temps allow. I want a positive riot of color out there so this is the beginning.
Also finally weeded a flower bed that's in a circle around a river birch tree.
We don't have sun today, dammit. There's still plenty of benefit to being outdoors, though, so I took advantage of the warm day and feel much better than when I got up.

Thought about going outside to weed and cut back some ornamental grass but we had some much rain in the last 24 hours I just can’t. Don’t want to squelch around and kneel in the cold mud. Next weekend maybe.
Hoping to get the Kennebec potatoes soon, got the potato pots ready.

I double checked the hibiscus-it's definitely dead so it goes on my cut down list. I'll have to pay our landscaper to dig out the root ball because it's beyond our ability.
I dug out the collard roots and will soon hoe the weeds in the raised beds so I can plant. I cut down and DH dug out the rosemary which I simply don't want anymore because it takes up too much real estate for the amount of times I used it. Started cutting back the lantana, got about 1/4 of the huge bed done before my back died. DH bagged up the trimmings which we will have to in the trash can one or two per week. When we eventually finish with the lantana in a week or so, we'll have to dig out the roots which are massive. Then I'll start planning new plantings in the area for pollinator attracting plants.
I picked up 3 packets of bush bean seeds at the local garden place, and a bottle of some organic joy juice they suggested I drench my roses with to help them recover.
Soon I'll haul all the empty pots to the storage area behind the shop. Then I can shop for succulents and other pretty things to fill in the gaps a bit.

Should my strawberry plants begin greening up yet? Sure hope they aren't dead as this would be their 4th year and the berries were just starting to get big last yr.

I need to do a lot of trimming. I had feet troubles last fall and got nothing cleaned or trimmed back. Tomorrow is to be 63 and rain, then in the 40's against so too cold them. Maybe be able to at least trim my roses back tomorrow before new growth comes out.
My garden all needs cleaned out. Hubs and I got the tomato cages out and hubs covered the strawberries anxious to see how they did. But we did not get all the old plants out and it started raining and that was the end of doing anything.
Lots to do out there.

My crocus and grape hyacinth are up. No flowers yet, but there should be some in the next few days. I need to get out and clean out the raised beds and get them ready for planting.

There are about a dozen more daffodils blooming this morning! I love spring, and there are only 20 more days until it's official here.
DST starts two weeks from today. Woohoo and stuff.
ETA: Okay. Dressed, bed made, litter box cleaned, trash emptied. No more excuses for sitting on my duff. The garden and its maintenance are waiting on me. As soon as I win the lottery, a gardener will be hired.

I did some online research and have a list of plants for my large circular bed that I consider my pollinator garden. Previously it's been 100% lantana but that requires a lot of trimming and DH whines about its unruly habits. This year I'm going to try a mix of plants - salvia, calendula, verbena, borage, scabiosa, pentas and buddleia.

I got the fungicide spread. Now understand that the lawn in the back yard is very small, maybe 25' x 70' or so. Using a spreader is NBD, just empty the fungicide into the spreader, walk the spreader back and forth to cover the lawn. It took about five minutes. When I was done, I was just exhausted. Like sit down and rest for 15 minutes exhausted. Now the sun is making its appearance intermittently, and it's 70, and I wanna play in the dirt, but I'm too tired.
My little seeds have sprouted and are beyond cute. In a few weeks when they're big enough, I hope I'm rested enough to get them planted.
I bought my Mega Millions ticket. The numbers are called on Tuesday night. On Wednesday morning, as soon as I collect the check for my winning numbers, I'm hiring a gardener.
