I had no idea that rosemary got so big. I have thyme seedlings in my foil pans and only planted seeds because it flowers and doesn't get too big. Only wanted it to attract bees and fill in some bare spots after the rest of the flowers are planted.
It's not going to be a very pleasant day today, and there probably won't be any gardening done. Sunny and warmer starting tomorrow with freezing temps tonight and tomorrow. It's not like I'll never get back out there but sure do miss playing in the dirt even for a day or two at a time.

Have a friend who planted an "herb" garden and included rosemary in the mix. Those two plants grew to height of 7 or 8 ft!! And still living - this was a good 20 yrs or so. Needless to say when I visit her (out of town) I always stock up. That is the only thing living in the bed now!

It was 28 when I got up! Eek. It's sunny and already 65, though, so a nice day. It won't be quite as cold tonight so the little "greenhouse" effect from the lids on the foil pans should be enough to protect them.
I puttered this morning pounding in some edging to define a spot where a whole new flower bed is going to be. In about a week or two when the danger of frost is pretty much gone, the little seedlings will get planted. Once they're well-established, the edging will get pulled up.
The lawn wants to be mowed, but I'm tired. Maybe later or not until tomorrow.

DH and I got about 3/4 of the front lawn raked today to remove the dead grass. We'll finish it tomorrow and maybe give the back yard a pass too. Our landscaper is coming to mow on Wednesday which will help get more of the dead stuff out. Thursday DH will fertilize, and then we wait a couple of weeks to spray for weeds. I'm going to hand spray a few selected trouble spots this coming weekend. Normally we use a pre-emergent but the local garden gurus say not to do that this year because the grass is going to very vulnerable as it recovers. We still have to cut down the hibiscus, but all the other stuff is leaving me really sore so that will have to wait for another day. Besides, we still have two 30-gal bags of dead stuff waiting to find space in the trash bin.

Giving starting seedlings indoors a try. I got a couple trays at Walmart and some seeds. We'll see if I can keep them alive long enough to plant outside in several weeks.

Anyone ever grow blueberries? They have some over at Lowes. Thinking if they are easy to grow I might give them a try.

The main issue I have with growing from seeds is making sure they get enough sunlight. Are your kids going to help? Mine always enjoyed growing things when they were young. Pumpkins, popcorn and sunflowers were always fun.

CCL I have that problem when trying to start seeds indoors. My solution this year was to use 9x13 foil pans with the clear plastic lids so that I could put them outside. A couple of times we've had a hard frost at night so they were covered up with a frost blanket. When it's been very warm during the day, they're uncovered so that they don't burn. So far, so good. They look healthy. In another week or two they'll be planted in the garden.

I do that, too, but it's too cold outside at night til at least end of April. I can sometimes put them out during the day (all over my front sidewalk lol) but if I forget to bring them in, they are goners. I bought a light at Lowe's to help. We'll see how it works.

66° now and warmer the next 2 days. Doing some yard cleanup but too early to plant anything. Another month until our frost free date.

Lawn has been mowed. I was moving a wicker love seat where I put the pans with the seedlings and one fell off. It looks like I got them put back and didn't kill any, but won't know for a couple of days I don't want to be a baby killer, especially because they're blue bachelor buttons that were intended for a specific spot in the new flower bed.

Looks like the seedings that got dumped are okay. Whew! oped Yours are looking good. I wish I had window sills for mine. This morning a lot of elbow grease was expended cleaning up the pavers that separate the flower garden from the lawn. Scrub brush and water with dish detergent and a bit of bleach. Whenever I'd step on those things when they were wet, I'dbethisclosetotakingaflyer. I'd have used the pressure washer but don't know how.

I got some sprouts! I need to find a better place to put them so they can get some sun during the day. We'll see if I can keep them alive long enough to get them into my planters once we set them up.

Since I got important stuff done today like fixing my monitor screw-up and writing up minutes of Monday's meeting, I'm rewarding myself tomorrow a.m. with a trip to Lowe's garden center to see what they might have.

Before they were ready for me to pick the birds ate everyone.

I hit up Lowe's garden center this afternoon and found some salvia, pincushion flower, phlox, and dianthus for my pollinator garden, a poblano pepper for my veggie bed, and assorted succulents to rebuild my pots.
Next week I'll circle back to Home Depot for standard liriope, and hit up another nursery that shows giant liriope in their online inventory. And maybe head to some outlying places that have the less common succulents. I can't even talk about "replacing" succulents as I lost 10-year old plants and can only find 2- or 4-inch pots of those varieties which would take years to grow to the size I previously had. It is what it is.

I have even more seedlings today. I may end up having to transfer some to my herb pots on the porch if they get too big before we can safely plant them in the backyard.
So exciting. We have carrots, lettuce, zinnia, sunflowers, morning glories and one pansie. Possibly some spinach trying to come up.

The thyme has been planted, some in the ground and some in a pot. DD had errands to run this morning so I went along just to get out of the house. There's a Lowe's just up the street from her bank, and after she did her banking insisted we go over there "just to look." When she made her bank deposit, she had two 100s that were stuck together and only added in $200 to her deposit instead of $300. When the teller told her, she said just give the "extra" $100 back. When is $100 ever "extra"? Extra? I didn't want stop at Lowe's because I knew I'd see lots of flowers that I'd want and because I knew the senetti would be out. But...but...she said she just wanted to look. Mmhmm. I don't have two cents to rub together until Rocking Chair Money Day on Wednesday or until the stimulus money is deposited, whichever comes first and would rather have gone on Wednesday. Nope. Not Wednesday. According to DD "everything" will be gone by then. She couldn't grasp the "I don't have any money until Wednesday" thing. There were lots of plants, lots of bedding plants, and lots of shrubs, but I only had eyes for the senetti. OMG! They were so beautiful! DD insisted, absolutely insisted, demanded! that I let her buy senetti for me because she had the "extra" $100. After wandering around for a while she wanted to check the discount shelves that are kept at the back of the store. Guess what was on those shelves ?? Senetti! Yup. I got five perfectly healthy but very thirsty plants for $5 each. On our way to the checkout, she saw another one at the full $13 price and plopped it in the cart. They are planted. Blue. Purple. Pink. There are daffodils and hyacinths blooming, too, and all together they make it look very spring-y. Ahhh. Except for admiring it, I'm done in the garden for the day. DST tonight! Woohoo. ETA: There are dianthus blooming, too, and the azaleas have buds

Dug up and transplanted some of the hosta and Chelonia - did I kill them? Have to wait to see. Nervous that I moved them to a spot that was too sunny, but have to keep reminding myself that nothing has grown in that corner of the garden because it’s too shady - once it’s summer, with the sun in a higher arc, the house will shade that spot most of the day. Fingers crossed. If I did kill them, I left part of them behind in their old spot, so I won’t be completely without them.
Nervously put out some grass seed over where they had to dig up the septic tank over Christmas - I know you don’t plant fescue in the spring, but couldn’t find any rye annual seed. DH found some ‘patch’ seed that comes mixed with mulch and fertilizer that promises it will be growing in two weeks - and he’s promised he will water it every day it doesn’t rain (he’s retired, so he doesn’t have much else to do). If we can baby it through until the fall we can over plant with more fescue and hopefully have a somewhat sturdy patch of grass then. It’s unfortunately right in front of the doors to the storage room under the house where all the yard tools/lawnmowers are, so I really don’t want a mud pit there all summer. We’ll see what happens.
willow has it’s catkins out. Daffodils are blooming. My allergies are starting. Spring is near.

A second miniature crape myrtle has leaves! A neighbor told me his fig tree survived, although his loquat trees lost all their buds so he won't have a crop this year. DH found the first bush bean seedling poking it's little bitty head up. I plan another mental health day at a nursery this coming week in search of giant liriope, then I'll circle back to Home Depot for a couple of the large succulents I saw as I was leaving this week. Later in the week might be a road trip to a huge nursery in the county south of us.
