I watered thoroughly this morning even though there was a 90% chance of heavy rain. We 10 percented almost all day except for a thimbleful of raindrops mid-afternoon.
I'm really tired of summer. Can the flowers just please keep blooming without any attention from me? And about the weeds. How about if they just die on their own.

Sunflowers and one dahlia from my cutting beds. We’re in our fifth wheel right now, and I usually bring flowers with me. I was nice and left some sunflowers at home with my daughter.

I lit a fire under myself and blew leaves and mowed the lawn and deadheaded some cannas. I feel kinda bad because nothing except the mowing and blowing really needed me. Everybody likes to be needed.
Speaking of lighting a fire under myself reminded me of years ago when my boys were at the age where they learned from friends to light farts. Ah, yes. Those were the days.

I deadeheaded and weeded a lot this week, getting ready to plant a new round of crops most places except where the tomatoes and peppers are growing. I like spring and fall gardening but I hate hot weather gardening... I'm hoping we don't have too many more weeks of this.

Pretty, pretty, pretty. I love gaura! I've got these in pink, red, white in my garden. The bottom one looks like rudbeckia. Perennial is my middle name

Thought the black snake visiting our yard equipment storage room under the house was gone. Found his snakeskin hanging from the tool pegboard. Never going in there again.
Also, whacked myself in the face with a wild blackberry branch (very thorny) I was trying to remove from the shrubbery bed while trying to not succumb to heat stroke.
Researching condos.

No yard equipment storage room needed so no snakes there. No wild blackberry bushes there, either.

I spread another 10 sacks of garden soil this morning in the spot that used to be a pine island in the front yard and planted a couple of hundred iris bulbs. There are about a hundred left to go, but I got tired so I'll finish in the morning. When they're all planted, they'll get covered with black mulch. I'm tired just thinking about planting the rest of the bulbs, emptying out and spreading all those sacks of mulch.
As soon as there are daffodil bulbs available, those will get planted in the former pine island, too. I'm tired again.
If all the bulbs sprout and bloom, it'll be pretty in the spring, right? Right?

Actually, right now the flowers are looking a tad bedraggled. Getting toward the end of summer, heat, bugs, fungus. The view from my teeny, tiny patio is tolerable but not as pretty as earlier in the summer. Tennesseer sent me instructions about posting pix. I'm going to spend the winter figgering out how to do it so y'all can see the flower explosions in the spring. Be patient with me because it's really hard to teach old dogs (or old ladies) new tricks

The iris bulbs have been put to bed where they will sleep peacefully until spring. They've been pampered and prayed over and mulched. Now it's up to Mother Nature. In a couple of weeks when daffodil bulbs are available, those will get planted, too. Now I don't care if the rain starts up again. I'm tired. Nap time. ETA: I worked and slaved over the bed for the iris yesterday and today, and it just occurred to me that...I forgot to use the bulb starter. Deliver me. When it quits raining, I guess I'll just go out there and sprinkle it to cover the whole bed and rake it in or something. A job well thought over is half done. A job not well thought over is simply not done.

I watered this morning. Plan to do a lot of weeding and planting this weekend but today is still stuck inside most of the day on cleaning/organizing.

I'm having a crisis. Planting the bulbs without bulb food makes me feel like I put my kids to bed without supper I had a bright idea about just sprinkling the bulb food over the entire bed, but remembered that it's already been covered with 3-4" of mulch. There is much hand-wringing and teeth gnashing going on in my little pea brain.

It will wash in I think.
I might have started 50 broccoli/cabbage/Brussel sprout plants for fall. They are in ground now. Also weeded up all the beds ready for beets and lettuce and spinach tomorrow.
We were walking around talking about trees today. Husband is not going to get as much of what he wants but ah ... he got most of the house and garage he wanted.

I dunno...through that much mulch? Maybe I'll just wait until I put the daffodils in and do it then. Do you know how hard it is to type "much mulch"? What's even harder is to say it.

They will sprout next year using the energy they stored THIS year!! But hold on to the bulb food and do feed them next year after they have bloomed.

They won't punish me by refusing to bloom?

oped Whaaaat? You neglected your flowers? I can't even... Come to think of it, all my flowers could probably use a dose of benign neglect, but I don't have anything else to fuss over

Headed to local garden store tomorrow for more insect killer, weed killer, bird seed and seeds for fall garden. Hopefully will get to plant the seeds next weekend if not blown away by Laura.

Curious what you’ll find for garden seeds. Here in Massachusetts seeds are sold out everywhere and Fall seeds (presumably from this Summer’s crops) are ordered but not arriving. 😳

Just pulled seeds for beets, lettuce, spinach, some herbs I wouldn’t mind another round of if they make it, peas and radishes.
Also pulled the seeds to stratify.

I'm only looking for greens like turnips, collards, Swiss Chard etc. so maybe I'll get lucky.

I throw my banana peels on the garden to add phosphorus for the bulbs.
