That looks like a tulip tree. I got up early and attacked some housekeeping jobs in the garden. Or would those be gardenkeeping jobs? Anyway. I wondered why the gladiolus at the back of the garden had buds but wouldn't bloom so went up there and did an inspection. Bugs. The bugs got them! Well. I'm smarter than the bugs and Sevin spray is meaner. Bugs gone but glads had to be cut back. There are others that are just now setting their spikes. Maybe the bugs didn't get to them yet or maybe the Sevin will act in time. That's what I did until it got too hot to stay outside. I even cleaned up my mess and hosed off the patio. There's more to do tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow... It's a magnolia. ![](https://www.pepinierepierrefonds.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/Magnolia-1.jpg) It’s one variety of magnolia tree. Known as tulip tree or saucer magnolia also. In my neck of the woods we call it tulip magnolia. Others refer to it as a tulip tree! ![](https://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff155/JiminiChristmas/ymamsmiles/tongue2.png) Some call it saucer tree.

I have so much to do, I don't know where to start, I get a bit of this done and a bit of that. But today DD and I basically just ran around.

Four tomato plants were purchased and planted. I grabbed a basil plant too. I think I should have taken it out of the pot it came in but I followed the instructions.
I redid two pots of pansies. I'll see if they snap out of it. The other two look fabulous. I've figured out what to do with the peas. And I'm going to plant some squash.
I found a watering can today. I think I'm all set now.

When my daddy was deciding how to get a job done, he'd say he was hatching a plot. I must be an optimist because I'm hatching plot for how the garden should look next year.

Let me see if I can find the website address. This shirt showed up in my Facebook feed and I thought of Miss Rigby.

I like it, but don’t wear sleeves that short. More and more I wear men’s shirts because the sleeves are longer and hit almost at the elbow.

I often wear lightweight long sleeve shirts (UV protective) with a t-shirt over it. Arm problem solved!

Depending on the t-shirt and length of sleeve, I add a small row of cotton lace on sleeve and row on bottom of shirt to match. ![](https://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff155/JiminiChristmas/ymamsmiles/tongue2.png) Your solution is a good one but way to hot in my neck of the woods to layer anything. Heck I hate wearing shirt over bra but decency laws kick in not to mention scaring little kids and little ole ladies!!

NoNamePerson Lace? Do I look like a person who would have lace on anything except maybe my unders (and probably not those, either)? Do I? Look at me. Just look. My idea of dressed up is wearing shoes. My idea of formal is clean tshirt/jeans and shoes. Now suggest lace again I started pulling up iris. Holy cow, I had no idea how much they'd multiplied. They multiply faster than rabbits. And while I was out there, minding my own business, a wasp came along and bit my hand right through my glove. The nerve! Anyway it got too hot to work and the smell of rain is getting stronger so that's it for today. There's still about 2/3 that need to be pulled up. A gardener's work is never done.

I once had a big fight with my mom over magnolias. She grew up in the north and this was the only magnolia she knew. When came down here she saw some of the massive southern magnolias (which are not at all similar to the tulip type) and flatly refused to believe me when I told her they were southern magnolias. Sure, right, I’m lying to you about trees because whatever.

happyhoix A big LOL. I never knew there was any other kind of magnolia until I checked Mr. Google and had no idea what we call tulip trees were also magnolias. I'm reminded of phlox. DSIL's mother was visiting a couple of years ago and wandering around in the garden asking what this flower or that flower was. When she came to the tall garden phlox and asked I told her they were phlox. Nope. According to her, not phlox. She knew what phlox looked like... not phlox. She'd only ever known creeping phlox, therefore, tall garden phlox weren't phlox.

[br Part of the problem was I wasn’t interested much in gardening as a kid, it’s something I picked up later, so my mom always assumed I was a gardening idiot. Once, at age 45 or so, I offered to help weed her beds, and she wanted to come watch what I weeded so I wouldn’t mistake her gladiolus for weeds. I told her she could either trust that I knew what a glad was or I wasn’t going to weed for her - no back seat weeding. She reluctantly let me do it by myself and I think I impressed her a tiny bit when I told her I found her primroses and didn’t weed them.

The river birch got a haircut today because (1) I was tired of the branches tickling me every time I walked under it with the mower and because the threat of ticks got to me. Those things will land on any warm-blooded animal. I'm a warm-blooded animal. And (2) because the lawn under it doesn't get enough sun and that encourages the fungus when it can't dry out between rains. Most of the branches got chopped up small enough to fit in the trash can. The rest of them will get chopped up more and stuffed into the big plastic mulch sacks that I save when I use up the mulch. That's the sum total of what happened in the garden today. I trucked on over to Home Depot and Lowe's looking for the fertilizer stuff for the tomatoes. Nope. We have one tomato. One. The plants both blossom but the blossoms dry up without producing tomatoes. My mama would say I'm not holding my mouth right. Also wanted to get a sickle or a scythe, but couldn't find one of those, either. I was hoping to find yarrow and asters. Nope. An hour of my life that I can't get back

I'm off today as far as gardening goes. It rained last night so no watering and nothing is close to harvesting and I'm not weeding today because its humid and I don't want to ![](https://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff155/JiminiChristmas/ymamsmiles/smile.gif) I need to clean out the 'pool' because i drained it yesterday and new water comes tomorrow.

It's hard to believe for us as modern people, that an evil look coming from an envious person could damage and even kill a plant, but some sure believe it, or they choose to believe it davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/5172 My mother strongly believed in envious people killing plants with merely a look. The solution was to spit three times in the direction of the plants. Yeah.

I have threatened plants with pulling them up if they don't shape up and do their thing as intended.

I've spent two three! days eating an elephant. That is, pulling up overgrown iris, cutting off the foliage, and saving the bulbs. There are more to do, maybe a hundred, but I got tired. There must be an easier way.
Now I've got to clean up the pine island in front, prep the ground, dig in topsoil and garden soil, and plant the damn things for next spring.
Shoot, I'll probably be a crispy critter by next spring and won't even get to enjoy them.

Was weeding potatoes, strawberries, peppers, and celery. the celery is looking good, says 60 to 90 days to maturity. I tried last year they died. My leeks are in a pot by the house, looking good too, may transplant where I'm pulling onions.
Then started on onions, quit for a bit its hot. Ate one wonderful, sweet strawberry, many blooms, picked one pepper, 2 more are almost ready and tons of buds getting ready to start peppers. Pulled 6 onions, the aroma is awesome, for tacos tonight.
For some reason the last 2 days I'm tired. Didn't make it over to help hubs. So decided to do some weeding. Going to have to dust my cabbages again, man the worms ravaged them, want to get any I missed. I have onions left to weed. would like to finish planting the one row in flowers if I have more seeds. With all the landscape fabric down, its pretty quick and easy weeding. Sure like doing it that way.
I need to go in the front of the house and pull weeds out of the mulch, easy to do. Really need to water my 2 raised flower beds, its very dry out.
