jerseygirl I wish I could post pix, too. People keep telling me it's beautiful, but when I sit outside and put my critical eye on it...meh. Separately, all the flowers are beautiful, but all together it doesn't pass muster. At least not my muster. And the offer of weeding is accepted!

I’ve spent so much time this season expanding my veggie garden and getting it going that I have seriously neglected the various perennial beds. I spent a couple hours this morning weeding, feeding, and mulching a hosta bed outside my family room. One hosta is so unusually big this year a small family could live underneath it. Still need to work in the rock gardens in the front yard (😱), a strip on one side of the front yard, and one front corner before the neighbors file a complaint against me. 🙄
On a related note, something ate all my little strawberries. They were just turning pink the other day. 😡

Okay. I'm done now. An hour this morning watering. An hour around noon fiddling around. An hour this afternoon pinching back cosmos so they will bloom and pinching back daisies so they won't grow so tall. Tomorrow I'll pinch back the chrysanthemums because the darned things not only have buds but already have a few flowers. Too soon. They're a fall flower and just about the only thing left when we get gloomy weather in November and December. I need flowers then.

Lightning bugs have arrived. I miss seeing lots of lightening bugs. I live on the corner of walk and don’t walk so don’t see them very much in the city. But brings back fond memories of childhood

Well, I pulled up the last of the pea vines. We got enough peas from the 3 rows for a few meals, but they take up too much room fo too little yield. I don’t think I’ll plant them next year. Now I need to get out and plant some green beans.

Saw a coyote in my backyard today! I live in a rural area but within a subdivision with a ton of silly dogs that bark at the slightest thing but apparently none of them noticed the coyote.
At least I know he won’t mess with the tomato plants.

DH and I worked our butts off outside this weekend but didn’t get as much done as I’d hoped. The blueberries are fenced and mulched. Just need to cover them from the birds and chipmunks. The trellis is in for the zucchini. We weeded, weeded, and weeded. I am really good at growing bittersweet and Virginia Creeper. 🙄. Got the corner bed weeded. I just need to amend the soil and then I can plant a short euonymus and a short juniper there. Got one rock garden mostly weeded. Washed the outside of the windows in the family room before I mulched the bed outside them, so that ate up a chunk of time. I’ve got to water this morning then might just do indoor housework, although it’s going to be a glorious day weather-wise.

I still haven't planted my zucchini. That's on my list for this week. Finally put the peas in. Have to double-check the area and make sure the effing rabbit can't get in again. I have vegetable land fenced off because of them. I have 2 other beds I had to fence too. I like rabbits but not when they eat my morning glories. Little fuckers. On the plus side, the stupid groundhog has been hanging out in the yard across the street. I think it finds his shed much more hospitable. Either that or it remembers me chasing it when it ate my sunflowers. Damn it! I forgot sunflower seeds.

It's New England, so, of course, while today is sunny, in the low 70s, with no humidity, it is going to be in the 90s by Thursday. My zucchini is bushy, but the coming heat should really get it going, so I figured I might as well get ready for it. The damn chipmunks and squirrels keep digging up my sunflower seeds. This last try, I coated them in chilli pepper and garlic as I planted them.

My neighborhood has tons of rabbits. The backyard is fenced. I assume they could wiggle their little butts underneath if they wanted. However, I have multiple loud dogs on either side of me. I assume this is keeping them out of my backyard.
Next year the vegetables are going in the big built in planter box up on the deck. The deck needs redone so we didn't use it this year.
My squash sprouted quickly. The peas were staked and are slowly getting the hanging of climbing the stakes.

I got the hibiscus and orange tree fertilized and watered this morning. The weather forecaster said the humidity would be back and she was right-it's 88 degrees and 53% humidity now.

My garden is weeded, I set the timer for the soakers and dusted the cabbages again, never seen the worms eat it that bad, some have escaped, guess I should have done it before now.
I filled up a trash can and tub with water and went out to the fence row and watered my roses and plants out there, it is VERY dry. Maybe some rain on the weekend, maybe. Also did some at the end of the front porch and my smoke tree. Thinned hostas away from my little fir tree.
We need to pull out the 2 euonymus and a fir, they are in sad shape and replace them, not sure when we will get it done. I need to weed the landscaping across the front of the house.

I looked at the apple trees and peach, they are all loaded, going to buy spray again this week and get hubs to treat them again, the peach is much better then it was but needs another treatment. Then will I beat the squirrels to them or not.

When we lived in Virginia Beach my DD accidentally planted a peach pit when she was a toddler. By the time we moved away five years later that peach tree was bearing buckets of the sweetest yellow peaches. I was amazed.

We had a tornado flatten our woods 11 years ago and standing in our two acre lot looking at the woods that have grown up around it I realized there’s a lot of mimosa trees that have established themselves along the edges. They are considered invasive exotics and only live 10 to 20 years but they are beautiful right now, with big pink pompon flowers.

I got out early and attacked the west corner of my property which my neighbor oh-so-unkindly plows his snow on or has had his landscaper rip out perfectly good and pretty annuals. I weeded, amended the soil, planted 3 shrubs, and watered them in. Tonight I'll mulch the entire corner. I'm considering buying a section of corner fencing, but it might look weird being the only piece of fencing in the front yard. Or, I'll find some rocks and build a rock wall.

I took a long walk yesterday, and came across something I've never seen before. Yellow peonies.

Was out early again to mulch the new shrubs in the far corner. Then I weeded the stretch along the side street. Then I planted 2 small arbor vitae in urns. Then I didn’t like the planter I had a bunch of geraniums in so I transplanted those into a different planter. Then I planted some more lettuce in a partly shady area to hopefully thwart bolting in the heat. Then I swept the back porch. And now I’m exhausted and ready to WFH. 😆

A neighbor gave me some newly sprouted milkweed seeds. I put them in a small pot and will put them in the ground once they grow up a little more. I hope they grow up and give me more seeds to plant next year. I really want to plant more to help the monarch butterflies.

I have milkweed seeds to stratify. And butterfly weed. I think I’m too late for fall planting so might wait to be ready for spring...

I'm exhausted but I weeded my grandma's big flower bed that stretches the front of the house and around the side. Should have done it early, I got too hot. Happy father's day to my dad and uncle that it's done and they don't have to do it.

Its too wet to weed. I am so excited that I should have zuch and yellow squash within a week. Lots of little ones. I got one little yellow this week, lots of lettuce and spinach, but I'm ready for veggies... I have a feeling my beets will all be ready at once! The earliest and next planting seem to be coming in about the same. I need to plant some flower seeds and next batch lettuce and spinach (which may not work due to heat but its been a weird year so I'm going to go with it). Everything seems to be growing well. Yay. Even my perennial starters are filling in and flowering more than I would have thought for their first year.

The tomatoes are done for the year and it's too hot to plant anything else yet. We had some really great rain today with more expected tomorrow and next week.
Oped, I don't know your zone but Malabar spinach is a warm weather variety that thrives in zones 8-9-10. DH prefers it to classic spinach because it doesn't get mushy/stringy when cooked.
