The sun finally came out this afternoon after all week of rain. It’s hot and humid here and will be in the 80’s tomorrow. I planted some hosta and geraniums this afternoon but still have a few more to plant. I have three more roses to plant and the two oldest DGS’s will be here Sunday to weed and help plant.

I sprinkled hot pepper flakes over all the flower pots on my deck hoping to stop squirrels digging in pots. Raining tonight and tomorrow so maybe hit pepper flakes will keep them away

Raining tonight and tomorrow so maybe hit pepper flakes will keep them away I used aquarium gravel in pots on patio. A friend suggested it long ago. I thought what the heck and what do I have to lose? I bought a small really bright shiny colored gravel bag of the stuff and put in two pots for a test run. Squirrels left those two pots along and still messed with the other pots. So I put it in all the pots and no more squirrels digging around. Just a thought.

I puttered around in the shady part of the garden but gave up after about an hour because the heat doesn't care if I'm in the shade. Heat + humidity = stay indoors in the a/c! I'll try again in the morning before it gets hot.

So morning got here, and I tried again while it was cool and mostly shady. I did stuff and was merrily puttering around when I felt sort of funny. Turned out it was noon already and 85. I gave it up for the day. The weeds will still be there tomorrow.

I hand hoed a little yesterday. Wanted to scatter a little seed today but haven’t gotten there yet...

The garden centers are picked clean. Nary a twig of rosemary, a stalk of basil, or a strand of chive to be had. I had hoped to plant herbs in my window box today.

Two of my grandkids came over today to help weed my flower beds in the front of the house. They put mulch down too and it looks really nice. I have a few more plants to get in the ground, but that will have to wait a day or two.

(Smile as the emojis seem to not be working.)

I got going early while it was still cool, watered everything thoroughly, and gave the burning bushes and the camellia haircuts, trimmed some branches on the river birch because they hang too low and get me when I walk under them with the mower. Besides that, ticks. Ticks will leap onto warm-blooded animals. I'm one of those. I don't like ticks.
For days and days we've been promised pop-up thunderstorms, but they aren't popping up here, dammit. Oh, well. No rain, no lawn fungus.
The heat dissolves all the starch outta me so now it's nap time. The garden will still be there tomorrow.

Knocked power out for 22 hours. Finally came back on yesterday around 5 or so. With 90 degree weather, was never so glad to have air kick on in a long time.
Supposed to have another round today. Can I send them your way?

I can't find potted herbs anywhere. I think I'll try the Atwater farmer's market tomorrow.

I got a rosemary delivered from the local community garden. Didn’t mind 5$ for one plant... they take a long time to grow... but, lol Most of my peppers that came up are hot, so I ordered some red bells and thought I was ordering 4 packs... they were 3$ which is twice what the Amish place charges for a 4 pack but I figured, support the garden... but they were single pepper plants? And no bigger than would be in a multiples pack... I laughed.

My rosemary is huge. It’s up against the back wall of the house and faces east. It was just a title stick with a couple of branches when I got it. It’s now taken over the whole bed. I need to cut it back.
Planted the rest of the knockout roses yesterday and today with help of two DGS’s. We also weeded the front flower beds and put down fresh mulch. It looks really nice. If I knew how to post pictures, I’d do so, but I’m a Luddite still.

Hubs is going to fix a barrel or something for my trailer on the mower and a sprayer. I have some plants way out in the yard I want to water and dragging a hose way out there is a challenge. I usually have a plastic lawn bin I put in the back and fill but this will work better. I would like to add a few knock out roses in my fence row but Walmart doesn't have any this year. About 4 more would work.
I think I said this, he got my 3 fruit trees sprayed, hope it stops the stuff on the leaves. It kind of looks like yellow blisters.

Finished garden between and during rainstorms. Green beans, peas, lettuces, zucchini, watermelon.
Also planted more zinnias, vincas, and coleus.
Need about 3 more bags of mulch to finish everything off.

We moved my little plants off the deck when we started trying to strip it. We out them in the steps at the back door and next to the steps. And since we rarely use that door, I forgot all about them, out of sight, out of mind. Oops! I think it will take something like a miracle to bring them back,

One thing I learned last summer is that you have to cut bAck leggy petunias. That may mean cutting blossoms off. it makes a real difference.

Yeah water them. Even if the current leaves don’t make it the roots might send up new growth.

It might take a bit. I planted some parsley last week that promptly wilted and flattened itself against the ground dead... and kept watering it, and I noticed new shoots coming up this morning. There were 2 lettuces I planted the same way... all the old leaves went plllbt. but the center is holding and growing up now. Plants are sturdy buggers and we tend to forget but the leaves, while they serve a necessary function, are not the core of the plant...

I once threw the core of romaine lettuce into the garden as a lazy person's idea of composting. Soon saw the romaine core sprouting new leaves.

Well. I was all set to sort of rearrange a flower bed into a long border at the edge of the garden after giving it a lot of thought, figuring out what would look good together, would require the same amount of sun and shade and water.
A job well thought over is half done.
The weather has a different idea. It's been raining on and off all morning and not looking good for this afternoon, either. Besides, I have a dentist appointment at 4. It's a PITA to get to their office, and I have to leave at 3.
Tomorrow is another day except that it's DD's birthday, I have to pick up her birthday cake in the morning, and we're doing birthday lunch at noon straight up. I do my best work in the morning. After lunch it will be too hot to work outside.
Drat.

Picked the first of my peas today. It was just a handful, but with all the rain we’ve had, I expect to get a lot more. Got all my plants planted and even found some solar garden stakes at Harbor Freight. They come 3 to a pack for $7.99 which is a lot cheaper than I’ve seen anywhere else. Tomatoes are shooting up and I need to this out all the volunteer ones that we don’t want.

I loved eating raw peas right out of the pod. It took a long, long time to shell enough peas to cook--shell some, eat some, shell some, eat some... Thanks for that little trip down memory lane, Anne. I can feel the feel of sitting on the back steps, colander in my lap, shelling peas.
