Still resurfacing that road to hell...there are zinnias that need to be moved, dianthus that need to be moved, sunpatiens that need to be planted. Maybe tomorrow? It was just too darned cold to work outside today. Our high temp was 60. 60! What's up with that? It's May 20 not March 20.

There is a rumor we are getting frost again tonight... a full 6 days past our normal frost free date... which I've planted weeks ahead of for years with no problem...
Today wasn't my favorite day. I have a headache. I should be in bed.

At this rate, I'm thinking my peas won't get burnt up. No frost in forecast but it's usually a lot warmer by memorial day here. I need to go water my pansies.

Peas don’t mind a little frost. They are cool weather plants. I’m trying to be grateful that this cooler weather gives my broc/cab/bs time to grow in a bit.

I just finished planting 16 marigolds, when the neighbor's TruGreen service shows up. He is going to spray lawn weeds. He does come over to talk to me. I ask for a 10 minute head start to cover my new plants and my clematis. I got 5. Luckily he had 15 minutes to smoke his cigarettes in the truck after he doused 2,4 D on the lawn. My neighbors were not home. Her pots likely got some drift too.
To quote my friend Rocky, "It's hard to keep shit nice".
The clematis was looking really good too. Hopefully I am whining for nothing. I often do that!

Today DBF and I went to one of the nurseries Tennesseer mentioned earlier. I’ve been there before and today it was just as overwhelming as the 1st time I visited. We weren’t looking for anything in particular. The flower beds along the front of our house are mostly filled with a row of shrubs that I don’t like. I don’t see us digging them up this year, but it’s never too early to start researching and formulating a plan.

If it is, it's always a good idea to see what comes up and grows during the spring, summer, and fall growing seasons. Then you know what you did like and want to keep and what you didn't like and what needs to go.

I bought two more yellow knockout roses today from a local grower. I was pleasantly surprised to find them less expensive than the big box store and they’re not only bigger but they look nicer too. It started raining soI won’t get to plant them today.

If it is, it's always a good idea to see what comes up and grows during the spring, summer, and fall growing seasons. Then you know what you did like and want to keep and what you didn't like and what needs to go. Yes, I moved here last summer. So far, I’ve only seen a couple of things I’d like to keep. One is a bush near the mailbox that was colorful in late winter/early spring. I have no idea what it is. The other is a purple bush near the front door. This house screams for symmetry around the front door, but the 1 purple bush is a loner, and idek what it is. We have a couple of crepe myrtles on a corner of the house and in the flowerbed at the mailbox. They still look dead at this point. Some kind of holly in a flowerbed on the back, but it’s not full and looking healthy. All that to say, most of what’s here, I can do without. Except I’d like a mate for the purple bush in the front. I have 4 flower beds, the one spanning the width of the front of the house and the one around the mailbox are the most prominent. The ones along the front of the house have the kind of shrubs that look like a solid mass that people just trim and square off, with a couple of random trees and the purple bush near the door. Trust me, it’s all ugly. DBF is already looking crazy because of the deck project, I don’t think it’ll be in my best interest to start on the flowerbeds anytime soon. Besides, even if we started digging stuff up tomorrow, I don’t have a plan yet. One of the beds on the back of the house has already been cleared of the half dead shrubs that were in it. DBF thinks we might need to shovel all the soil out of that one since we don’t know what killed the shrubs and maybe whatever it is, is in the soil there. That makes sense to me, but does it really make sense? Should we get rid of the dirt that’s in there and replace it?

@pinkcshmere - regarding the crepe myrtles; they should be well leafed out at this point. Try scratching the surface a little bit of the bark of one of the myrtles. If you see green under the bark, the tree is alive. No green, not alive.
Try in several locations on the crepe myrtle just to make sure.

While DD shopped for groceries at Walmart this afternoon, I visited their garden department. When I'm in there, I head first to the clearance shelves. Today there was a big pot of bright pink phlox that was gasping for water. Poor thing. She was marked down to $5. She followed us home, and I gave her a drink. It ran right through the pot because the soil was so dry, so I poured it back through. Twice. In less than an hour she had recovered. She's happy and grateful to have a home where she'll be loved and cared for and never be thirsty again.
At the crack of dawn tomorrow, I'm going to Home Depot's garden department to visit the flora. There could be some there that want to follow me home like the phlox from Walmart did today.
The garden is very big so there's plenty of room to adopt more flowers.
A little while ago I noticed that there are two Stella d'Oro lilies in bloom.

I get all kinds of stuff there. From $1.00 to $3.00 mostly. I’m sure there are plants that will follow you home. They jump in my cart at times!

NoNamePerson When I go to Lowe's I always start at the back to see what "Clarence" has to offer! DD bought a miniature rose bush there the first summer I lived here 11 years ago. She paid 50 cents for it. It's now about four feet wide and blooms nonstop from early spring until late in the fall. A couple of weeks ago we visited Clarence at the back of the store, and she found a huge pot of mini petunias and verbena. $5. All it wanted was some water. There weren't any flowers on it and no tag so we had no idea what it was going to be. It's in full bloom now with tiny yellow and purple petunias and bright pink verbena. Sometimes the plants back there are in such good shape that we snatch them up and race to the checkout before somebody decides it's a mistake and moves them back with the rest of the plants. Love their "Clarence" department and wish Home Depot would do that, too.

You can buy sprays called Critter Ridder or Ridz All. They both stink to high heaven, but they're effective.

Rainy day today, going to be hot tomorrow and the next day, so I'm going to go and cut some peonies for a vase in the dining room. That way they won't be wasted in the mud and they'll go nicely with some carnations I'll also harvest.

azucena Sure! Clarence won't mind a bit. He has an ego as big as all outdoors. He didn't have anything for me this morning. Jerk. All Lowe's had was fungicide that I need for my lawn. However, Phyllis Phlox from Walmart's Clarence shelf yesterday got planted this morning. Some impatiens that were in a spot that has very poor drainage got moved, a few of the lavender plants were shuffled to give them more room, a few other things got done, and a bunch of cuss words were directed toward the magnolia trees. I like them a lot, but they are so messy and a PITA to clean up after. Three red hot poker plants were put in weeks ago...so far nothing. Grrrr. I might just buy some in pots. I came in because it just got too darned hot. The magnolia leaves will still be there tomorrow.

Planted lavender. Watered. Dug in Epsom salt around the impatiens. Puttered. I'm done for the day. What does the Epsom salt do for flowers?

DH is threatening to shoot the raccoon that visits every other night and destroys our ponds. Totally illegal to do so. Not sure what we are going to do.

Hmm. Interesting. I was going to ask if it was for slugs. I use lava rock in beds to discourage slugs. Use it like mulch. On top of soil. Kinda pricy but worth it for me. Seems to work.

Interesting. There is a recipe for weed killer using vinegar, Epsom salt, and a couple of other things. It didn't work. Maybe this is why.
