“The US response will be studied for generations as a textbook example of a disastrous, failed effort,” Ron Klain, who spearheaded the fight against Ebola in 2014, told a Georgetown university panel recently. “What’s happened in Washington has been a fiasco of incredible proportions.” Jeremy Konyndyk, who led the US government’s response to international disasters at USAid from 2013 to 2017, frames the past six weeks in strikingly similar terms. He told the Guardian: “We are witnessing in the United States one of the greatest failures of basic governance and basic leadership in modern times.”
In Konyndyk’s analysis, the White House had all the information it needed by the end of January to act decisively. Instead, Trump repeatedly played down the severity of the threat, blaming China for what he called the “Chinese virus” and insisting falsely that his partial travel bans on China and Europe were all it would take to contain the crisis.

Our first known case was in January. Cases didn't start exploding until March. We had two months to put things in place. And we didn't.
This supposedly effects mostly older but we've already had an infant die. We've had more than one under 18 die. We've had several under 50 die.
We've quickly moved to the exponential part of the curve because people think it's a hoax, that it's not that serious, that this is America so I don't have to listen to you.
Honestly at this point all I've got is I gotta have faith in Darwin.

I thought that W was the worst president since Harding.
before this crisis i have said that i think this president was competing with Harding for the lower rungs.
now, i think he has the lowest rung fairly well secured. he will have to improve to beat the likes of Harrison.

Have to agree. I must of been remembering W. Poor ol' W. He wasn't, to me, presidential material either but he had some endearing qualities. He's the kind of guy you can see yourself enjoying a beer with. Trump doesn't have that charm as I see it.

He was CEO of a national medical company, so it was a good fit on him. He (Trump) would make the perfect HR administrator, everyone is a profit number. No small reason He was casted for that reality show.

You seem to be saying the CEO sees the employees as "expenses" and then HR (Trump like people) sees them that way too and works with the CEO to squeeze as much as possible out of the employees. I'm guessing this kind of relationship would mean HR spends alot of time and effort watching out for/preventing lawsuits and filling positions (as I'm guessing most positions are a revolving door) I would think HR administrators need some empathy and knowledge of the law and to form a bridge between those driving the business and the employees. (Have you never seen the movie Metropolis?) OK, I guess if the employer's workforce is mostly low wage/low skilled workers Trump as a HR admin would work... no one cares about the workers if it's a revolving door type of employer. But, if the employers workforce is higher skilled workers - I would think the employer would want to attract and keep talent - in which case HR needs walk that line between keeping the employees happy AND keeping those running the business happy. And I would say Trump is NOT capable of doing that.

Maybe he is just weird and cold, but the way he runs the place and the way he treats people, I don't think he gives a single shit about workers. He will ask for useless stuff by text on a Saturday night. He rolled his eyes at the shelter in place and pressured everyone to continue to come to the office. He talks over people and is completely dismissive. I know other leaders are the same, but they learned to pretend a little better.

I tuned in to tonight's episode of word salad. I dont know what the average American thinks, or how the eff his approval rating is what it is right now for how badly he has fucked this up, but well, there's my opinion. for how egregiously he ignored doctors and scientists who actually understand epidemiology and medicine, he should be charged with murder for the volume of lives that will be lost.
I'll go catch up on this thread now.

Apparently the photos of the body bags in Queens AND a friend having covid19 in the hospital are what's helping to change 45s mind on this. It's driving it close to home for 45.
ETA - I read about the friend going from a mild case to hospital this morning but now I can't find it.

As a former owner of a defense contracting/design/primary fabrication company with an average employee count of 1500, I don't have a clue for how you got your ideas on how companies operate.

Not making excuses for anyone, especially Trump, but it's human nature to think that these things always happen somewhere else. There's 200,000 people in the air today, over the U.S. The only place it really seems to be hitting close to home, is New York City. Sorry to hear your friend has this, was it a test positive ?

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question (in my defense I have not lived here for the majority of my life) but who is GWB? I thought that was the "Shrub*" but then you use W separately?

Geo. W. Bush...referred to as GWB or W or a few other things. His father was Geo.H.W. Bush.

trump said that he was "distracted" from the coronavirus because of impeachment. What? He wasn't too distracted to hold more rallies, and it didn't keep him from golfing.
And pence is blaming (1) China for not alerting the world earlier and (2) the CDC. Y'all remember the CDC, the same CDC that trump gutted of employees and funds.
Trump has also said that if we "only" have 100,000 deaths he'll have done a good job? What's he going to call it if (when) there are more than that?

President Donald Trump tried Tuesday to cast himself as the wise leader who rejected the advice of a "group" of people who had portrayed the coronavirus as a mere flu and had argued that life should go on as normal. He did not mention that he had been the most powerful member of that group. Trump's marathon coronavirus press conference included the usual barrage of specific false claims. But it was more notable for the dishonesty of the broad story he was telling -- an audacious attempt to erase the memory of his relentless efforts to suggest the coronavirus was not a crisis. www.cnn.com/2020/03/31/politics/fact-check-trump-coronavirus-march-31/index.html

He wasn't REALLY a part of that group. He was just saying those things to ferret out the real conspiracy. And look how well it worked, you're all posting about it!
Did I get that right? Does that reserve my spot on the spaceship after I drink my kool aid?
