I realized today that I am hoarding frozen food! Not really, but there wasn't an inch of room left in my freezer. I reorganized it somewhat and discovered some stuff I didn't remember I had. I put down a couple of things to defrost. I can't believe how FAST I'm going through my stored food. My food used to last a long time because I went out to eat a lot. Grabbed a falafel here, a shish taouk or souvlaki there, suppers at restaurants, etc. I thought I had a lot of food at home. I don't. This has surprised me too. We just went to Costco Thursday and the fridge was packed. It is still packed, but by the end of today it won’t be because we are having leftovers for lunch dinner today. That will take care of the 2 serving containers of soup, and the ribs and mac and cheese.

As of right now MD, VA and DC have all issued stay at home orders... But people see grocery shopping as an escape. So whole stores are not jammed packed, we are still getting enough traffic to meet regular sales goals (so really Nothing has changed).
Had this weekend off because we were supposed to go to a party in Long Island that has been canceled (duh) so spent the weekend getting some well needed sleep.
Found out today that the regional Vice President told all specialist to work from home and they don’t want them in the stores. So they get to work from home while we have to drag ourselves to the stores everyday? Another associate said something that stuck with me: we are part of the 100,000 people they are ok with losing.
Shows how valuable we are!

Same here. I understand they can't build me a lab in my garage and they can't build a manufacturing plant in people's backyards but don't think we all don't notice how much effort is being made to keep the office people safe while we are expected to be here no matter what.

Shows how valuable we are! I'd been thinking much along the same lines. Last night I was barred from working or entering the store for 72 hours due to a cough (30+ years of smoking) and shortness of breath (possibly panic or too much time at home, smoking). My g** that was a relief.
I don't worry as much about getting the disease as I worry about spreading it to others or sucking up medical resources during the surge. I don't want to be around people now and I am not impressed by the protective equipment and supplies that my employer has provided to staff. There's a lot of wipe-down theater but our social distancing is weak, weak, weak.

As I explained to my coworker, even if she still has to come into the office (which she wanted to do anyway), the fewer other people that also come in, the safer it is for her to come in. That doesn't help Carl at all, unfortunately. Thinking of you, Carl! Stay healthy!

And I imagine many soldiers, particularly those who were drafted during the Viet Nam War, feel exactly the same way.

Winning! Went to a grocery store yesterday with DD and found a few boxes of old-fashioned rolled oats for sale. We eat the steel-cut oats but I use the old-fashioned version for baking. I'dbeen looking for 3 weeks before I found these, standing alone on empty shelves where all the hot cereals should have been. I'm catching up on this thread now, I know I'm late to the party. lol... I have a canister of the old-fashioned rolled oats in my cabinet, I'm not even sure why I grabbed it. can you post some recipes you use them in? either PM, or any of the recipe spots on this board. thanks!

I need to make more of an effort to get out and support the local restaurants providing curbside service. I've decided we will have take out once a week. (We used to eat out maybe twice a month). Last night I picked up my order from a local restaurant. When I called, I paid with a CC. When I got there, four people were ahead of me, standing 6' apart. When it was my turn, I went to a window (nearly closed) gave my name and waited. When they called me name, I went inside where my order had been left on a table. I actually ordered enough for last night and tonight. They have a "Family style heat and serve" menu. Last night was Italian lentil soup with cheesy bread and tonight is pot roast with potatoes and vegetables. I'm out of fresh produce, so no salad, but will have a side of canned green beans. The food was really very good and I felt safe due to the way the restaurant set up the takeout.

Oat meal for breakfast:
Twice as much water as oats. Boil water. add oats, turn heat to medium and cook for 5 minutes. Take off of heat, cover, let sit for about 5 minutes.
You can add raisins, cranberries while cooking
Add cinnamon and sweetener, milk if you wish

I went into the office for a bit to do payroll. All grocery stores I passed were still packed, but on the way home I noticed the Target parking lot had very few cars. With so few people I decided to stop in and see what they might have in stock. I was actually pleasantly surprised. They still had some frozen strawberries, oatmeal, milk, and a few other items I needed.
I ordered take out yesterday from a local seafood place. The set up was really nice. They had a drive up area. The person stayed 6 feet way from the car and asked my name. She brought out the bag and put it in the back set on the passenger's side. She never got close to me. I will continue to order take out at least twice a week.

We are getting takeout once a week from a little restaurant and wine shop we want to support. Call in the order (food and a nice bottle of wine) and they will bring it out to your car when you show up. Waiting to see if they are still doing it this week.

What kind of oats do you use for no-bake cookies? I love those things, but never made them myself.

What kind of oats do you use for no-bake cookies? I love those things, but never made them myself. I use old-fashioned rolled oats for all cookie-, candy- and other making/baking, including oatmeal cookies, no-bake cookies, fruit crisp, granola. Granola: Stir together 1/2 c vegetable oil, 2/3 c brown sugar, 1 Tblsp vanilla, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp cinnamon. Pour over 5-6 cups oatmeal. Optionally, add shaved or shredded coconut and plain nuts of any type (I like almonds or pecans in this.) Mix well. Press mixture into cookie sheet and bake at 325 degrees for 35 minutes. Let cool, then break into chunks. Add dried fruit: cherries, raisins, craisins, blueberries, whatever. Keeps very well in airtight container. Good with yogurt or ice cream.

I found 1 lb bags of yeast today at a local market. Bought one for $5 with the idea of cancelling my $20 option from Amazon. Came home to find out it just shipped. Dang, now I will have 10 years worth of yeast. The only thing still missing here is toilet paper.

Add a 100 pound bag of flour, a 50 pound bag of sugar, 20 pounds of butter, and a couple of dozen laying hens and you’ve got an in home bakery. I’m partial to sugar cookies and cinnamon rolls

I have never ordered online to pickup but I did today.
It was a rather slow process. I cannot believe how much stuff Sams was out of, so much I also had to order from Kroger. My Sams delivery is to be ready in the morning. I pick it up between 9 and 10.
Kroger indicated all the items I ordered they have. However, at the bottom it said they can substitute but you didn't have to take it if you didn't want it. And they couldn't give me a pickup slot till Friday, wow! But that Krogers also delivers, not this far I don't imagine, would be a nice service for $10 if they did.
Our one tenant family I'm going to share things with her. At first she said well what do you mean by share. I said Sam's quantities are so large I can't use them all, she said we don't have much money. I told her its ok, we have enough stuff in the food we are buying for them too. Hubs is more worried about us washing all the packages off with bleach and water before bringing them in. So far they are the only family in poor shape. I knew they would be, so much of his money goes for child support, its hard for them to live. It's ok, we will help more if they need it. Hubs wants to help the other single mom we have with reduced rent this month, its fine with me. This is a time to help others in need if you can.
I just saw where Indianapolis is called out as one of the hot spots. I was surprised by that. I suppose of the airport there? We just had another case in our county today, almost all of them except a couple around us have sick folks. But people were all out running around not listening so it was expected. I hope they start to listen now.

My husband has started to panic over toilet paper. We have 5 rolls in the cabinet which should last us a few weeks. We also have several boxes of Kleenex, while not the same, will do in a pinch. But he can't stop talking about. First he is asking me repeatedly if now is when I would buy more anyway. My answer is kinda no. I don't make a trip until we have 2 rolls. If I am out and about and have 4, I will pick up a pack. But the storage space I have for TP is kinda limited. After answering that 12 times, he started reminding me that we should check to see if the store has any. I am not going to the store, what store does he want me to check? Does he want to go specifically to a store just to check? Then he started planning for different stores he could check. Dude, calm down. We have like 3 weeks to find a roll of toilet paper.

Word of advice: don’t wait till you absolutely NEED one. We are getting toilet paper in and paper towels but they are gone within the first 2-3 hours of the store opening; and we have a limit of 1 package per person.

I was just in Price Chopper to get some produce.
They are completely out of TP, and had about 4 packages of paper towels. I wasn't looking, but I just went up that aisle to the checkout because there was nobody in it.

I went thru something similar with DH at the start of this. "do we have tp? maybe we should get some? are we shopping on sat this weekend?" I knew we had an untouched 18 pack but he didn't. Even though it was in it's usual spot - the floor of the small bathroom. I did pick up another pack the following week. It's TP, we'll use it. We tend to average 1 roll a day as it is. We're about 1/2 way thru the first one and I'll probably pick up another one in a couple of weeks. We do have some TP, gloves and hand sanitizer in our camper, parked 30 miles away from us. I think DH has forgotten about that. The gloves and sanitizer are mainly used by him after he deals with the black tanks so I'd rather not empty that supply right now. Besides, there's not much there anyway. We didn't resupply at the end of the season last year.

When I checked the other day, Amazon had toilet paper again. That is awesome because when I tried to order from them like a week ago it was unavailable. Anyway I think I have enough toilet paper to last the 5 of us ~2 months and enough paper towel for ~3/4 months. The Gov Of VA just declared a stay at home order till June 10th and my wife job informed her she may be working from home till July/August: So thinking about this for the long haul!

The medical experts seem to say we have to social distance until everyone is tested and/or a vaccine is developed in 18 months-2 years. I still have a hard time believing the supply chain and food producers can sustain that. It hasn't internationally. I also have a feeling all those "stimulus" payments are going to empty the shelves everywhere since food is pretty much the only option to spend it on because everything else is closed. Today Amazon and others have workers "striking" because they are unsafe at work and people are getting sick. I don't have a ton of faith Amazon will remain a viable option for groceries. My son works as a stocker for WalMart and said they do nothing about their employees potentially getting sick. I guess they figure if their staff get sick they are easily replaceable since so many people are getting desperate for money. He said customers are bumping into him all the time and yelling at them when they can't find what they want. I continue to shop for basics and every time I shop I buy extra food to put into the pantry. I'm not "hoarding" or taking food that's in short supply so others go without, but I am also trying to get to a point where if the virus shows up here or groceries get more scarce I have the option of not shopping for months. We might have some weird meals, but we would be safe and not starve.

I had a recurring Amazon order for like an 18 pack of Cottonelle of the smaller rolls, b/c they are hard to find. I was using them in the main bathroom, but when DH changed the bathroom countertop, I mentioned it to him, and he told me that since he cut into the side of the vanity to add an outlet, he would install a newer TP holder to hold the larger rolls, and fill the existing screw holes. After he did that I changed my recurring order to every other month (still like the smaller rolls for DH's office). Since TP got so hard to find, I was able to change it back to monthly. I tried to add an order for Paper Towels, but it either would not let me, or it would not let me specify a brand and I am a brand snob
I should get a delivery of TP from Amazon on the 6th if everything goes ok. I have a good 18-20 rolls on the shelf, and there is a 9 pack of Charmin Mega rolls by the front door. DH was obsessing he did not have enough TP at his office, so I gave him that one, and he left it sitting by the front door. I guess he is fine as long as he knows it is there. I found Store Brand Paper towels at the grocery store yesterday. I have about 6 rolls of bounty on the shelf, but we are going through it faster than normal, and it is impossible to find. If I really need Paper Towels though, the package I sent to the office about a month ago was Huge, so I could always have DH bring some home. I have 3 bathrooms with a supply of TP in each bathroom, so if I run out in one bathroom, there is still probably plenty of TP in the house.

I don't post locally about my stash, might have the house stormed, LOL! I always keep 2 cases of TP back, and a case of paper towels. I added a case of 60 rolls in Feb when we heard this could be a huge problem. Like hubs said this virus was only a plane ride away. So I stocked in Feb, didn't cause a shortage as there was plenty back then. So I think I'm good for some time.
When I went to UPS, I was laughing because people were mailing TP. He said the last couple of weeks had been one of the most shipped items. I still couldn't believe it.
I don't know if its true but heard a trucker on a call in show. He said there are 2 big plants that make TP in the US. That 85% of TP is made in this country, he said the one up by Seattle had workers that had gotten sick and was closed down. I don't know if has since reopened. I haven't looked up to see if this is true, but would explain a lot of what is going on if it is.

If they can prove recovered patients are immune, those people could go back into the community. www.cbsnews.com/video/antibodies-from-recovered-covid-19-patients-could-be-key-to-fighting-virus/I am also pretty sure that a vaccine is the highest priority and we may well see one in a year... Maybe

That 85% of TP is made in this country, he said the one up by Seattle had workers that had gotten sick and was closed down. I don't know if has since reopened. I haven't looked up to see if this is true, but would explain a lot of what is going on if it is. Funny, I offered to mail a pack to my mom when she couldn't find any locally. I also told her I'd told my DS the other night I could send her a case from Amazon for Mother's Day instead of flowers.

My trip to Sam's is not what I expected. I found when I got there I still had to go in to get my order. Went to one place, she sent me to another in front of the registers. There I showed my paperwork and they gave me the flatbed to push out. I asked for someone to load and waited. Finally gave up and was done except for a heavy box of detergent and someone finally helped. Apparently they do not have concierge service. I had a mask on and gloves, noone at the store did. These folks are on the front lines all day long shouldn't Walmart equip them with the protection they need too? And people going in with no face coverings. No wonder its spreading. I'm going to go wipe down the packages before I bring them in. I'm just trying to keep us safe.
And we got word last night Indianapolis is now considered one of the hotspots in the US. It's only 100 miles from us and in between I noticed the cases are building.
I'm going to try and keep groceries and supplies topped off once a week with pickup which should lesson my exposure. I believe Kroger you can pick up outside, I will find out Friday. If so will shift my ordering to them. It showed only the first 3 pick orders are free then you pay. It is what it is and will do it.
