I've been having a problem finding bran flakes- I add them to yogurt to give it texture and extra fiber. It doesn't help that bulk food bins are no longer available in stores due to health hazards but I'm wondering if people are using bran in breads and muffins. Have you tried grape nuts? They are great for adding texture to yogurt. I like adding Kashi go-lean crunch cereal.

Hey, I don't want to worry you all, but did you catch the article that Smithfield foods has shut down their South Dakota location after 80 employees tested positive for coronavirus? Guess which brand of hams is on sale at our local grocer? Smithfield! Um, no thanks...

Guess we'll be doing extra hand-washing.

Several packing plants in my state have employees with COVID-19. The plants made no changes to their procedures so it was just a matter of time.

Most hams were processed and packaged weeks ago then kept in cold storage. The contents will be safe. I’d be more afraid of more recent Covid-19 exposure from grocery store staff and other shoppers on the outside wrapper. But even then, the virus only lasts a few days on plastic.

Not only that, viruses can only exist in a very short temperature range....which is why your body gets a fever, to help fight it off. If you stick the ham in the oven to heat it up, it will kill the virus.

I should have doused it with the Lysol spray.

They were able to find virus on the cruise ship after 17 days. I would hazard a guess that the moisture from fruit and veggies would be sufficient to keep the virus viable for 2 days if they could find it on hard surfaces on the ship.

Not trying for sterility! just hoping to reduce any viral load. And I do wash fruits or veggies if possible, all are prepackaged when ordering online Do you do anything to reduce virus on groceries? Or don’t bother? My husband is very high risk so I’m trying as much as possible to decrease exposure

Viruses do not replicate unless they have cells, so the same viral load is still going to be on the veggies after 2 days in the garage as it was when you bought it.

Actually forgot to mention that I also wash these groceries after leaving in garage. Just no hurry as there is with needing to refrigerate or put in freezer Also there is the study that found after 24 hrs on cardboard no (little?) virus was detected. Although as you mention found after much longer time in some studies. I do know very well that virus doesn’t replicate without cells So what do you do???

I saw a recommendation somewhere that you could dunk things like lettuce in Very dilute bleach, then rinse. Don’t have a link handy but maybe worth a quick google to validate? Don’t try on berries or porous things...the rec was from someone who lived on a foreign base where there was a risk of infectious agents (e.g plasmodium something or other) on the produce.
If you’re willing to take the extra step you can also wash things like apples in warm soapy water.
I might go to heads of iceberg where you can peel off and discard the outer layers instead of packaged salads.

The risk is other people, staying away from them is what is important. All these other things being done may feel good, but are not going to decrease your risks dramatically.

Now I feel better about my lack of sanitation of groceries and packaging... I figure they are the least of my worries.

People are the problem, avoiding them is the solution. Plus handwashing. The rest pale in comparison.

I wipe things down coming in the house for my own hyper vigilant state of mind, recognizing that it is likely unnecessary, but still feeling better to do so.

I give packaged products, other than frozen, a wipe-off with a rag and Lysol spray before storing. Veggies and fruits are always washed here, period, and always have been.

Haitian, this is for your and your store employees, it was shared to my facebook:
Roy Allen Stagg
April 7 at 2:43 PM
From a grocery store manager:
I manage a grocery store.
Here's some things everyone should know:
1. I don't have toilet paper
2. I don't have sanitizer
3. I run out of milk, eggs and meat daily
4. I promise if it's out on the shelf ... it's not in a hidden corner of our back room
Those are the predictable ones, now for the real stuff
5. I have been doing this for 25 years I did not forget how to order product
6. I did not cause the warehouse to be out of product
7. I schedule as much help as I have, including many TMs working TONS of overtime to help YOU
8. I am sorry there are lines at the check out lanes
Now for the really important stuff
9. My team puts themselves in harm's way everyday so you can buy groceries
10. My team works tirelessly to get product on the floor for you to buy
11. My team is exhausted
12. My team is scared of getting sick
13. My team is human and do not possess an antivirus... they are in just as much danger as you are. (Arguably more) But they show up to work everyday just so you can buy groceries
14. My team is tired
15. My team is very under appreciated
16. My team is exposed to more people who are potentially infected in one hour than most of you will in a week (medical community excluded, thank you for all that you do!)
17. My team is abused all day by customers who have no idea how ignorant they are
18. My team disinfects every surface possible, everyday, just so you can come in grab a wipe from the dispenser, wipe the handle and throw the used wipe in the cart or on the ground and leave it there... so my team can throw it in the trash for you later
19. My team wonders if you wash your re-usable bags, that you force us to touch, that are clearly dirty and have more germs on them than our shopping carts do
20. My team more than earns their breaks, lunches and days off. And if that means you wait longer I am sorry.
The last thing I will say is this
The next time you are in a grocery store, please pause and think about what you are saying and how you are treating the people you encounter. They are the reason you are able to buy toilet paper, sanitizer, milk, eggs and meat.
If the store you go to is out of an item.. maybe find the neighbor or friend that bought enough for a year ... there are hundreds of them... and ask them to spare 1 or 2. They caused the problem to begin with...
And lastly, please THANK the people who helped you. They don't have to come to work!

We're going to have to find some different ways of provisioning ourselves because this state of affairs is too dangerous. We cannot continue doing this for a year, eighteen months, or two years, without putting many, many more distancing and containment measures in place. We may be poor and desperate, but what we are being asked to do puts you at risk.

We cannot continue doing this for a year, eighteen months, or two years, without putting many, many more distancing and containment measures in place. We may be poor and desperate, but what we are being asked to do puts you at risk. I've said since this started that I can see a time where it may be online-only for getting groceries or any other supplies. Either that or some sort of military distribution door to door. I don't think people will starve. But I think choices may be limited. In this area, they already are for various products. I do think it makes sense to have some things you want to eat/drink put back just in case. I can't live without french pressed coffee. And, I'm picky. So, I ordered a pile of it. I can eat whatever, but coffee is a sacrifice too far. Putting limits on purchases forces people with larger families or dietary restrictions to shop more frequently which also puts everyone else at higher risk. If everyone could shop for an entire month, that's a whole lot less risk for grocery workers and other shoppers. Only having a few stores open ensures the entire town all visit the same place. Same for those of us in towns without postal delivery. That doesn't help either. Amazon is struggling with stock, but I've managed to get a few things from them recently that were previously unavailable. And, while they are listing long delays for shipping, my Pantry order showed up 15 days early. I think when people start getting their stimulus and large UI checks you might see another run on stores.

It is nuts but I have been craving potato chips for a week. When I took the masks to town I went in a convenience store, I was the only customer and their clerk. Mask in plastic, plastic shield in front of clerk, sanitizer on both sides.
I took the 2 bags to the car, wiped them down with sanitizer and cleaned off the bags, did the hands. Would not let DD touch them till I did. Hubs said you mean you put your life on the line for chips. Sadly, I guess I did.
I am sitting here eating out of one. He and DD had been eating on the Kool Ranch chips.

I went to the grocery store today (the regular one, where we buy mass amounts of groceries, not the 'upscale' store that we visit often, but rarely get more than ingredients to make dinner. It has been quite a while since we have been to the store. We bought $235 of groceries. They had milk, but it expires in 3 days and was 99 cents. They had eggs, but they had very little easter candy - guess I am too late for that. I got paper towels, but they had no other paper products. I took the last hand soap. No rice.
They had a limit on how many people could be in the store, and the aisle were one way, which made us spend more time in the store, because we needed something on all the northbound aisles, but had to go down all the southbound aisles too.

Try a hardware store. We had good luck there when no one else had TP.

Office supply store, building store, stores that supply cleaning products to business offices? You might have to buy industrial sized, but it won’t go bad! Also, try hitting grocery stores when they open. Both the local FM and Costco had TP last visits. I was there when the store opened.
