Question for this group (and not trying to brag - I know the ridiculously fortunate position we are in - both DH and I come from parents with very modest means, so not something anyone in our family can give helpful advice on). We have contributed the max to each kid's 529 account that we will get a state tax deduction on ($6k/kid). C is a 5th grader and has $39.5k in his account (was $46k a couple of months ago, but stock market), and M is a 1st grader and has $27.4k in her account. We plan to keep contributing the max we can get the state tax deduction on until they graduate, and as they get closer to graduation, will move the money into more conservative investments in the 529. In our shoes, would you go ahead and add more to the 529 (especially right now since stocks are "on sale"), or just keep adding to the brokerage account and use that/cash flow anything the 529 doesn't cover?
FWIW, DH went to a nearby state university and I went private, but planning to send our kids to state university unless they have enough in scholarships and 529s to cover private as we should be able to cover state. I was able to get out of private school with minimal student loans because neither of my parents had a 4-year degree, lower income so I got a ton of grants, and scholarships. My kids will almost certainly not be eligible for any grants (which I don't have an issue with, just making it clear).
It feels like adding to our brokerage account is probably the right move, but wasn't sure if there was something I may be missing.

tcu2003 - I agree with you. I wouldn't contribute more than what you get the tax break on to the 529s. That's still going to end up being a good chunk of change and I'm assuming you could probably cash flow quite a bit too. I know some people are unconcerned with overfunding the 529 since they just plan to keep it for potential grad school or grandkids, but unless you specifically want to do that, I don't see the point of restricting money if you don't have to.

It does seem like you are on track to have evereything prepaid with 529 money, but if you draw from taxable, there will be LTCG taxes whereas the 529 money if used for education is not taxable for the gains. But since you already look to have all you plan to spend in the 529, likely a moot point.

But I do really hate the eroding milestones.....Will I lose the 1,400k milestone next time?? Yeah, that's getting a little old! I can take another 18 months to two years of FLAT, but I'm definitely ready for the 6+% return drops a month to stop!

But it sure doesn't feel like much of a party. At least we are still investing...hopefully that will work out well for us eventually!

This is the hard part for me since we STOPPED investing in January...investments down 20%, only our cash and Ibonds have increased. Hanging on for the ride down but hoping it ends soon!

Ah well.....tomorrow is another day. There is a bit of fudge in here, and I may update tomorrow. My ibond interest, and I haven't actually checked the hsa balances in a while, so I might do those if I have time, plus the updated numbers on mutual funds. Most of my stuff is individual stocks, so I know at market close. I wouldn't expect to be off by more than 1-3k so not alot.

Here is my October 2022 update:
ASSETS: Checking/Savings: $213,309 House: $512,700 Retirement: $1,568,973 Brokerage: $30,564 529s: $70,383
DEBTS: $0
Total NW: $2,395,929
As usual, the list above excludes our cars, which are worth around $30k combined, but I leave them out because we're unlikely to sell, and need them to get to/from work, kids schools, etc. in the land of suburbia.
Yay for moving back in the positive direction again!

Nice! My large tesla holding is pulling my results down, looks like everyone else is seeing positive movement this month. I still have faith. Me and George Michael. Will wait.....

Sold another property to farmer for $80k, no realtor involved. Since he is paying us cash for it, very little closing costs. We sent the property description today, writing up a simple contract to sell. He has farmed the 8 acres for 30 years I suppose and the house isn't worth much, so $80k is fair.
Still haven't finalized the other one, approx $55 net I think, realtor involved in it. Gave $30k for it, no work done till now to sell and rented for 6 years.
Getting ready to start work on another after Christmas. I have to research a bit, will net between $60 to $80k I think. Had to put in a new furnace/AC when we bought it, nothing more. Time for us to start selling at our age as hubs does all his own work.
Last year could have sold for more but weren't ready yet. We still won't lose anything.

A side note from this exercise. I really need to get a binder and start printing out statements and account info. Pretty much everything I have is online and if I died nobody would have a clue. I'd known that was going to be an issue for awhile, but it really hit home today when I realized I had forgotten about a couple accounts myself! Nothing big. I started an AK 529 plan for Carrot earlier this year that just has a few hundred in it, and I started a Roth IRA for older son when Fidelity was giving out the $100 bonus. That one is his obviously and not something I'd include in my NW, but forgetting about it before he even knows about it isn't good either! I tried accessing it just now and can't remember what the username or password is or if I set it up with his email or mine. I think the login info is saved on my home computer, so I'll check it out tonight.

I am trying to consolidate monies too as we are aging and I forget all kinds of stuff. Once in awhile I forget an account too so I know exactly what you are saying MPL. Also wanting to make things easier for us to track while we are still with it, LOL! But a good problem to have.

I think the login info is saved on my home computer, so I'll check it out tonight. yeah - I need to get my act together on this stuff too. I have some documentation, will go over with the offspring over christmas holidays. I had already prepped them their would be a "money day", going to watch netflix get smart with money, discuss stuff, maybe play monopoly afterwards
