After a weeks prescription of Clindamycin (sic) for tooth extraction, fractured root, abcessed, I developed the condition called C - Differential. Not what I expected to get. After the 2 weeks of horrible diarrhea, I was tested positive. I currently have lost 12 lbs. And haven't eaten for 7 days. I'm on the correct treatment and the high fevers have mostly abated. Should be able to eat in a couple more days if the improvement continues, seems very slow. Wasn't expecting the high levels of pain. Just moving in my chair hurts inside. mmhmm if I'm remembering correctly, you worked in the medical field. Do you have anything on this ?

I know C-Diff is highly contagious and hard to get rid of. I think sometimes it goes dormant rather than being eradicated. I am not a Medical Professional - My Dad had a condition similar to ALS, and he had C-Diff 2x. Both times he was in the hospital. Have you been hospitalized? Everyone entering and leaving the room had to put gowns, gloves and booties on.

Not in the hospital. Yet ? I've never been this sick in my whole 62 years, and I'm a cancer survivor. I guess if I get weak enough where I can't get up to do the basics, and it's going to be the hospital for me. I keep drinking water as directed. So far so good. The DW and I have separate bathrooms so we're good to go with germ safety. I keep everything wiped with bleach wipes every time I'm in there.

My sister's boyfriend had this after he was on a couple rounds of antibiotics. He was 22 and, if I remember correctly, he was in the hospital for at least a few days.
I think that's why they tell you to load up on Probiotics while you're on anti-biotics.

How are you getting nutrition/electrolytes replaced? Are you getting outpatient IV's?
I really hope you turn the corner soon. I am glad you are able to stay at home, I am sure it is much more comfortable at home, unless you get too weak and DW would not be able to care for you or you would be at risk of a fall.

I recently had bad reactions to 2 different prescriptions my dentist gave me while I was going through a root canal. You definitely have my sympathy. Wishing you the very best on your recovery!

Hoping you have a speedy recovery going forward, I know a couple of people that have had this and it was a couple of weeks of what you are describing and it sure wasn't pleasant.

I'm able to sip 'ensure' and 'boost', a little at a time, with no really adverse effects. Canned chicken noodle soup, cream of mushroom also.

It sounds terrible. Are you home alone? Do you think that packing a hospital bag would make you feel any more in control of the situation?

The funny thing is when there is nothing at all in my stomach, or passing through, I don't feel that bad.
I spend a lot of time watching TV, along with seeing Sonic and Hardees commercials with pictures of food.
It makes me a little crazy because I'm just so hungry and can't eat anything.

Glad to know that you are not alone. Sad to hear that the bag is already packed. You are most definitely very sick. Have you been given clear guidelines regarding when to seek hospitalization?

That's when the c.diff bacteria proliferates. Ironically, the treatment is more antibiotics. One of the best treatments for it is a fecal transplant. The success rate is over 90%. Has your doctor suggested this course of treatment?

My doctor told me I should be OK with up to losing about another ten pounds. After that I will probably need IV nutrition. He expects that the medication will do it's job before I get to that point. I've been on it for 48 hours at my next pill. 3 days is supposed to be the turning point.

When we were having our holiday lunch at the end of the year he stood up and thanked her in front of the group for it and we all lost it laughing and she turned bright red. No joke though it completely worked when nothing else did.

Did your doctor put you on metronidazole or vancomycin? Metronidozole isn't as effective.

It's in pill form, and is tasteless. It's the route I'd choose first, if I had a choice, instead of more antibiotics and feeling like crap. I'd rather eat the crap. It really does work like magic. You ingest healthy bacteria which sets up colonies in your gut. Antibiotics just keeps killing all bacteria, good and bad. It's a much slower road to recovery.

Gosh, @x, I'm sorry! That stuff (C. difficile) is naaasty and utterly miserable! weltschmerz gave you good information. The clindamycin killed off the good bugs in the colon and let the icky C. diff ones take over. From what you describe, I'd think the best thing to do, at this point, is give it another day, or two before you get too upset. It does take time to treat this stuff and it can be difficult. Are you feeling any better than you were? Are you staying in touch with your doctor and when is your next appointment? Be sure and wash the living HELL out of your hands! Hand sanitizers don't work against C. diff. Strict and thorough hand-washing is best. What medication(s) are you on? Usually, Flagyl (metrondiazole) is the first line of defense. It's an antimicrobial and is usually prescribed for 10 days. It should work well but, if it doesn't do the job completely, a fecal transplant is definitely the answer. That does work! We tend to get the creepy-crawlies at the thought of putting (skuze my French) shit in our mouths; however, this is a special situation and that squeamishness must be put aside. You've got to get the good bugs in there to counteract the bad bugs and that's the best way to do it. Please, keep me informed (by PM, if you'd rather). Also, be sure and take in plenty of fluids. That's important. Sorry I wasn't here earlier to respond to your tag. Took my daughter to the orthopedist and we were there for what seemed like days! Got home with the headache from hell.

About Flagyl. For mild to moderate infection, doctors usually prescribe metronidazole (Flagyl), taken by mouth. Metronidazole is not approved by the FDA for C. difficile infection, but has been shown to be effective in mild to moderate infection. Side effects of metronidazole include nausea and a bitter taste in your mouth. For more severe and recurrent cases, vancomycin (Vancocin), also taken by mouth, may be prescribed. www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/c-difficile/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20351697

Oh, so would I! Antibiotics have so many side effects, whereas the fecal transplant has none that I know of. Easy peasy! Furthermore, our overuse of antibiotics is wreaking havoc. I'd like to see fewer of them prescribed.

I'm under a doctors care. Starting my third day of vancomycin (sic) I'm living on boost and ensure, plus chicken soup. Although it exits 20 minutes after consumption. The fever left after one day of vanc. Is this a fungal problem mixed in at all ? Could be ? I've had a lifetime problem of CA induced prostatitis.

Boy did I have negative flashbacks reading this post.
I had basically the same setup as you. Broke a tooth that had a root canal. Oral surgeon put me on Amoxicillin. I started it on a Tuesday, had the tooth pulled Thursday. I felt fine Friday. Woke up Saturday with terrible stomach pain, nausea and diarrhea. This went on for hours until I took myself to a stand alone ER. They drew blood, gave me fluids and morphine. The doc said my WBC count was high and told me the numbers. I did feel better so they sent me home after about 3 hours with a RX for Flagyl. Went home and then to bed. Woke up a few hours later and felt worse than before...only now I was filling the toilet with bright red blood. I knew I was in trouble so after getting everything in order at my house, I drove myself to the hospital. I waited about an hour but once they took me into a room things started happening very quickly. They took me to CT scan and gave me more morphine. The doc came in to tell me I had severe inflammation in my upper colon ( I think but I was drugged) and that they would be keeping me. The morphine wasn’t really helping the pain so they started me on Dilauded and a couple other pain meds and several different 24 hour IV antibiotics. My IV pole was beeping constantly because something would run out and they would come hang another bag of something else. My WBC had more than doubled in just a few hours. My potassium was rock bottom so I had to take a handful of pills for that. I couldn’t stop shaking. When someone finally realized I had huge amounts of blood coming out of me, they started wearing the hazmat suits and quarantined me.
I was in the hospital for 6 days total. I dont really remember the first 3 days much at all. I was kept on a pretty steady stream of pain meds because it hurt so bad. I couldn’t eat or drink. By the time day 6 rolled around I still didn’t feel great but I had to get out of there. I wanted to be sick in my own home and my own bed. It was probably 6-8 weeks after that whole episode that I felt “normal” again. I had some stomach/colon pain and many foods did not agree with me for a long time. I had to continue with a couple different antibiotics for a few weeks after I got out as well.
I hope you are starting to feel better. It’s a miserable experience and one which made a big enough impression on me that I take probiotics every day now. It took me a long time to feel normal again so just know it may be a while. If you have blood coming out of you...get to the ER. I was shocked at how quickly and how severely I got sick. Hope you are improving.

It's a great pity the right of free speech isn't based on the obligation to say something sensible.

Gosh, @x , I'm sorry! No fungus involved. C. difficile is a bacterium. If you're not noticing progress in a day, or two, best to call the doc and let him/her know. The 10 days of vanc. works for many people. I just hope you're one of 'em! I'm really sorry this nasty stuff got on ya.
