Tomorrow I plan to completely reorganize my closet, sort out clothes, and get rid of any excess. Easier said than done but I'm making this a goal for this month so that should help.

Just finished going through two totes of Christmas things. My sister is taking all of the ribbons and bows, so they are in a bag to go to her on Thursday.
I tossed a few things and need to clean out the one tote.
The other tote contained boxed Hallmark Christmas ornaments. The ornaments are all in very good condition. Some of the boxes are and some are not. I'm not always a neat freak when I put things back in boxes. If my mom had put the ornaments back in the boxes, they would look like new.
I am going to get photos taken and start listing them on garage sale sites and eBay. In my experience, Craig's List hasn't done well in this area. It did when I lived in Colorado.
I'm happy I found the Christmas ornaments now so I can get them sold before Christmas. What doesn't sell the first time will be donated.
I did find some empty boxes. I have no idea where the ornaments are, so they are in the recycle bin.

Taped up and labeled 6 boxes for donation.
Set aside 1 box of books suitable for donation to the local library.
Found a notice from the county recycling department from last year about the "annual" October free shredding days. Will definitely be watching for a similar notice for this year. I've been piling up lots of shredding and have been dreading having to do it all myself. On the one hand, it's kind of soothing, mindless busywork. On the other hand, no matter how careful I am, I still end up making a big mess with bits of shredded paper everywhere.
The UPS store takes shredding from individuals once a week but charges a dollar a pound. That could add up fast. I'm told the library and my credit union also have free shredding days, but they are in the spring after tax season. Now that I've gotten the shredding sorted and bagged, I don't want it sitting around that long. Do you all have a local place you can take large amounts of shredding to be done free?

Dannylion - I usually work on my shredding a little at a time, going until it fills up or overheats but I don’t have more than a few pounds of paper at a time. It has helped me to look through and just trash those things I don’t need to shred like blank envelopes and long, boring disclaimers from the bank or credit card offers. If it has my name it’ll go through the shredder. Some communities also have large scale recycling and shredding, google might turn something up!
Today I’ve been packing like crazy and have another 3 boxes for the office ready to fill. The kitchen is feeling emptier even though I have dishes, Tupperware and cookware still out. I’m slowly filling up a donation box and recycling box and at some point soon I need to tackle the 30+ magazines in my dresser.
I predict that by the end of packing I’ll have 200-250 boxes which I don’t think is absurd for the size of my house and book collection... I think it’ll all fit in a 12’ truck or container and it’s the irregularly sized stuff that I’m more worried about.
While I know that, in context, 6 weeks isn’t a lot of time to have a house on the market, I’m up against some deadlines for finding a new place and moving before winter hits. Houses priced well in California tend to sell quickly so I’m not willing to wait around for months just to make an extra $2,000.

There's a place out near BWI I believe. You have to pay but it's reasonable. Several coworkers have been happy with it. I can ask for the information if you'd like. They even give you a certificate of destruction.

A place that is regularly available would certainly be more convenient than having to keep watch for announcements about once- or twice-a-year shredding events.

I went through my master bathroom. Threw out a lot of really old makeup. I also found my old TI-83 calculator. My boyfriend just bought one because I thought I must have given mine to good will after I couldn't find it in the office. So this was a good reminder that I need to get everything organized again. I brought a lot of office stuff downstairs to the office, and decided I need to get a shoe cabinet to hold shoes downstairs. I bought entry way shelves with the intent to hold 3-4 pairs and now the downstairs always has about 10 pairs scattered around. I'd like to just have all my in season shoes stored downstairs. I don't mind shoes being worn in a house, I am just more comfortable barefoot so I take them off at some point while I am still downstairs.
I plan to give away some old towels and curtains too. Still have some stuff in my trunk to go to good will. If they are open tomorrow I'll take care of it then. I may go down into the room that is getting junked up in the basement and take some things.

I spent a little time yesterday, in between rain sprinkles doing some yard work. One flower bed ready for Fall. Went through our joint e-mail account, cleaned out a couple hundred old e-mails. Un-subscribed DH from I think six that he doesn't read. I'll find out if he misses them.....Put some digital pictures in folders.
Still have a couple of files to go through for shred event next week. One box ready to go. Last day of a three day weekend. Have to prep some breakfasts and lunches. Laundry is caught up. Just have to choose clothes for Tuesday.
Happy Labor Day.

Today was my first full day back at work (on Labor Day lol). This is the crazy week with too many people visiting. Good news, I found out that my Job 2 Fri meeting is also happening on Thursday, and I can make it. So now I'm free to see my sister on Fri without rushing from Job 2. This week- create 5 online class spaces/Mon- pharmacy (DH)/Mon - Quickbooks for DH/Mon
- drinks w J/Tues - see E/Wed

I've been managing pretty well with current documents, but I was not always so diligent, so what I have is quite a bit of stuff I had sorted for shredding then stored away and forgot about some time ago and a lot of investment account and tax records that belonged to my dad. Once I get that out of the way, keeping up will be easier, for sure. Isn't is amazing how much shredding can pile up over just a short time if we let it?

dannylion I don't have a shredder, but I burn everything. I am just suggesting that in case you have a fireplace.

dannylion I don't have a shredder, but I burn everything. I am just suggesting that in case you have a fireplace. That sounds like a good solution if you use your fireplace regularly. I do have a fireplace, but I've never used it. I used the fireplace in my previous house, but the romance quickly wore off once I'd cleared the ashes out a few times. Hence the unused fireplace in this house. Also, there might be a squirrel living in the chimney. Once it leaves, I need to get someone to come out and install a new critter screen. I don't actually mind doing the shredding, but I always end up with a lot of stray bits of shredded paper on the floor that has to be cleaned up.

True, dannylion, we use our fireplace a lot. We have to get it "swept" professionally every year for our home insurance policy, so it always works well.

Well, the best laid plans... always get screwed up!
I intended to spend the week packing most everything that I could, stacking the boxes in the garage, then cleaning up by Friday and going to the Bay Area next weekend for the next round of Open Houses.
Except my Mom ended up at the hospital last night (back pain). My brother and his wife are with her now until my dad arrives this afternoon but dad has a planned surgery on Thursday and Mom can't drive 6+ hours. She's on pain killers and said they would just cancel it. Instead, I may need to get everything done here by Tuesday and then do the cab service for his surgery on Thursday.
I've got to be prepared for a showing anytime I leave and right now the house is a disaster with boxes everywhere and things pulled out as I pack. Putting on my running shoes and starting the clean up now.
To Do List:
Clean out my car - mostly done
Tape up all the boxes I have in the closet to fill Move finished boxes to the garage - started Really scrub kitchen floor (I spilled juice all over the floor)
Spread grass seed in backyard Cut back roses in backyard Pack up paperwork in office - mostly done Pack 50% of my dresser / hanging clothes - maybe 25% done Pack 50% of kitchen - also 25% done
Post on Craigslist:
-Shoe organizers (2) -Ikea bookshelves (3) -Red organizer
-White bookshelf -brown nightstand

thanks finnime, we can't even have showings or an Open House until my dad signs the paperwork that he ignored over the weekend. Now that he's taking care of mom I get to nag him about it.
The house is looking a little better since I decided to move boxes out to the garage and get a jump start on my laundry. Two more boxes to fill and seal tonight and then it'll just be tidying up Tuesday and Wednesday.
I assume that I'll be on dad duty Wed/Thurs/Fri so I need to leave the house clean in case I don't make it back before showings next weekend. I threw out about 20 items today so I'll update my total with that + items I've sold. Tomorrow I should be able to sell the red drawer unit and the short white bookshelf.

TheOtherMe- normally we wouldn’t need paperwork but when we signed the contract with the realtor my dad insisted on making it 60 days only. So now she has to have an extension signed before doing any work and once again my dad is making everything difficult.
I’m still stressed and frustrated and need to be disentangled here because he keeps making my life more difficult.

I understand. 60 days is not a very long contract even if there had been an acceptable offer on the first day. Sometimes loans take that long to process.
I totally understand your stress and frustration. You do need to be disentangled from him on this house.

All my framed art has been removed from the walls in preparation for being wrapped for storage. The move is only weeks away.

I'm proud of myself this morning. I stopped myself from responding to a Freecycle offer of an electric typewriter.
I typed the email, but didn't send it. I call that a win.

I tossed a broken costume quality bracelet last night. I had laid it on my night stand some time ago. The elastic holding the pieces together was stretched out. Last night I noticed it was completely broken.
I'm at home this weekend so I'm hoping to make some good progress.

I have about 15 things in my car to drop off at Goodwill today. I have a big box of old paint and another box of caulk in the garage. I think I will take the paint to the haz Mat collection on Saturday. The caulk DH said he needs to caulk at the rental property - so if he uses it in the next few weeks fine, if not once it is winter, I will it b/c it is only $4 a tube or so, and it does not do well once it has frozen (if it is in the garage, it has been there at least 1 winter already, so unlikely to be any good- last winter was very cold). DH said even some paint that had been in the basement was no longer usable).
Garage is nearly there. There are just a few things I could add to other boxes on the shelves, but DH said he would go through them. I want my car in the garage, so he has about 1 week to do it himself. He will need to go through the other boxes eventually anyways. He is hopeless, he does not have any clue what is where. He has no patience to look for anything. He tells me what he is looking for, and I can usually find it. Sunday he wanted one of those plastic things you use to hook hair out of the plumbing pipes. I keep them on a nail in the utility room behind the water heater. Have been there for years. He has not a clue.
vets wife - good luck on you closet project. I have too much in my closet too. Most of it fits me, but I was just thinking I should separate the summer clothes I wore this year from everything else, and then get rid of 1/4 to 1/2 of what is left so I have some room in my closet.
DS took his suit, but left his shoes. They were brand new, so I don't know if they were originally DH's - DH is going to look at them. DS said he bought a new pair. Maybe they were the wrong size...DS is not one to buy new shoes unless the old ones are falling apart. I went through the two baskets I had on the dryer in the laundry room, and have it down to one basket. It is mostly older towels we use for washing the dogs. We bathe them in the laundry tub. DS's closet in his old room now has some of his stuff he left behind and some of DH's stuff he has to go through and purge. I need to clean off the tops of his desk and dresser. There is some stuff he wants to keep but doesn't want to take, and some stuff I can purge. I don't think he will come back and do it for me, so I will have to make an executive decision. He took a big pile of his disk golf Frisbees that were in his closet on Sunday when he took his suit.

I went through another box of ancient receipts, etc. and will be dropping off two bags for shredding at the bank tomorrow when I take dad grocery shopping.
I will be taking a bag of Christmas ribbons for him to give to my sister.
