This week (updated)- haircut/Wed - estimates rental building (DH)/Thurs - book weekend in UK to take DS3 to college
DH FINALLY unpacked his bag so our bedroom is back to normal. We have a small bag of gifts for DS2+DD. There are more problems with the wonky building our studio is in, so we've been dealing with that today. Never a dull moment.

I'm a person that unpacks the same day I get home.
I think I got in to that habit from visiting my mom and my everything came home smelling like smoke. I'd leave the suitcase in the garage and immediately do laundry.

Hey TheO, *I* smoke (but very rarely IN the house). I STILL do laundry within an hour of arriving. This trip we didn't need to do sheets/towels, so the laundry was done/put away by bedtime. DH always tends to leave his bag in our BR waiting for the next trip (a weekend in the UK in late Sept). Sorry but NO! DH also fixed a plug that mysteriously came out of the wall while we were gone.

A plug came out of the wall while you were away? That's strange.
I never told mom that I did laundry and aired out my suitcase because of her smoking. She had this idea that smoking in the kitchen confined the smoke to the kitchen. It didn't. Some boxes of her stuff that I have opened (5 years after they moved here) have smelled like smoke.
My sister said she did the same thing with suitcases after visiting mom and dad.
She denied the yellow on everything until she had to quit smoking. She was hospitalized with pneumonia for 11 days and couldn't smoke. She did actually quit. When she finally felt better, she had to have the walls painted, the drapes and curtains replaced, carpet replaced and furniture replaced. She could finally see it and smell it.
It's a good thing because where dad lives now is owned by the hospital and there is no smoking.
I once shared a hotel room with a friend. I didn't know she smoked. She was very good at hiding it. She must have been smoking outside. Her clothes didn't smell like smoke and I had no idea she smoked after spending 3 nights in the same hotel room.

A plug came out of the wall while you were away? That's strange.I'm guessing DS3 pulled too hard on my computer charger lol. This week (updated)- haircut/Wed- estimates rental building (DH)/Thurs - book weekend in UK to take DS3 to college Taking it easy because next week is going to be hellish. A friend from college, one of my best friends who lives in Australia AND my sister will ALL be in town next week. Plans ALL that weekend too. Thank Gd no one is staying here, but I still want to see them all, and I want to see my sister twice. Sis is not staying here because her BF treated her to a Paris river cruise so they're sleeping on the boat. It's going to be a VERY harsh first week but it is what it is.
I don't really GAF about the friend from college but she is a close friend of my best childhood friend so I agreed to meet in Versailles for drinks.

DN1 called this morning to tell me that he and his wife are expecting a baby boy in March. He had called his mom before he called me. I'm guessing it's been a couple of years since they talked on the phone. I accomplished nothing on my to do list today.

I sold another item this morning and dropped it off at lunch time. I'm unsure if I would do it again. Slowly getting rid of those things we don't use.
I cleaned last night before a family dinner so the main level is in decent shape.

Congratulations on the happy news, TheOtherMe! Today's decluttering excavation uncovered the spare Magic Bullet blender set I got as a 2-for-1 (I think from Costco several years ago). I don't need 2, so I gave the second one to my neighbor, whose family loves to make smoothies. Their cat was thrilled; after the contents had been removed, the box fit him like a glove. Also boxed up a bunch of cookbooks I'll never use for donation and put a bunch of old paperwork in the shredding bin. Progress!

I've been utterly frustrated that the house hasn't sold yet and let it put me in a funk. We don't have Open Houses scheduled this weekend so I have pulled out the boxes and kicked packing into high gear. I also listed some furniture I want to sell on Craigslist and if I stay motivated there's another 3-4 items to post up there tomorrow. I'm getting very clear on the essentials that can stay out and what can be packed up. There's so much that can be packed still.
To Do List:
Clean out my car Tape up all the boxes I have in the closet to fill Move finished boxes to the garage Really scrub kitchen floor (I spilled juice all over the floor) Spread grass seed in backyard Cut back roses in backyard Pack up paperwork in office Pack 50% of my dresser / hanging clothes Pack 50% of kitchen
Post on Craigslist: -Shoe organizers (2) -Ikea bookshelves (3) -Red organizer -White chair -brown nightstand

startsmart, I know it can be so frustrating! During the process 2.5 years ago of selling one house and buying our new one, I (semi) jokingly told people I was going to write a book: Buying a home, The American Dream my A$$. Dollar signs there intentionally. Hang in there! You are doing amazingly well.

Worked today, I don't usually work on Fridays. Extra hours so I'm happy. DD came for dinner tonight, DS3 was here too. This weekend- pharmacy/Sat - bottle bank/Sat - dessert for Sat night/Sat - book ferry to UK Sun will be spent prepping for the new semester. I'm teaching 21-22h a week (instead of 24-25h like last fall) over 3.5-4 days. I may be offered more staff/professor hours, I'll know in a week. I'd happily accept 1 or 2 more. They're one-to-one or very small groups, with no marking, so less work/stress than a regular class. Because money.
I also have slightly smaller groups than usual, so less marking.

Yeah for less marking.
Now that I've fiddled around doing nothing, I'm going to get two grocery bags of shredding ready to take to the bank tomorrow. The daily limit is 2 bags.

I’ve been productive today!
Met with the real estate agent and we have a plan for showings in September and will hopefully mean a quick sale.
I’ve picked up some soil and grass seed for the yard as I keep rehabbing the grass. Next I need to replace the dead flowers.
I paid my car registration and car insurance for the rest of the year.
I’m closing out my safety deposit box at the bank.
Next up is picking up more small boxes, then grocery shopping for the week ahead.
I would like to have another load of boxes taken to my parents house before next weekend so I’ll work on that this weekend.

Two grocery bags are ready to be taken to the bank tomorrow to be recycled. I am glad that I didn't just everything in the bags without glancing at what was there. I found some emails I had printed years ago from my friend who died of brain cancer.
Found some other cards and letters that I'm too sentimental to let go of just yet.
Now I know one of the banker's box of paperwork fills two grocery bags.

Start, I'm amazed your beautiful home hasn't sold yet. Here's to the next open house, and a great offer!

I've been on vacation all week and haven't done a darned thing related to decluttering. I've been hiking, kayaking, bicycling and enjoying ice cream at the local ice cream parlor instead. I may be getting lazy.

I have NEVER been a collector, but I have a new obsession. The good news is it's relatively cheap, and it doesn't take up much space. I am in the process of collecting fridge magnets from all the National Parks we have visited. DS3 gave us one as a thank you when we took him to Crater Lake years ago. I bought 3 this summer (Yellowstone, Glacier and Olympic). I asked DS1 to buy us one from Redwood when he was there this week, and he did. I'm having Bryce, Zion, Grand Canyon (a deal, a three pack!) and Yosemite sent to DS1. He'll bring them when he comes in November. DH's friend A who we toured Yellowstone with lives near Joshua Tree, he's sending me one . I'm only interested in magnets from the parks we have actually visited. Oops I forgot the Everglades and Death Valley! I'll have those sent to DS1 too.
There are worse/more expensive hobbies, right? LOL!

Fridge magnets are my souvenir of choice when i travel. They're not expensive and everyone uses them.

If I go somewhere I really like, I'll buy a magnet. My cabinets at work are metal so they go there.
The poker chip ones in Las Vegas are the best for holding stuff up on our fridge. I got a handful of them when I went back after i realized how well they work.

thanks debthaven! we think that it's priced right but people seem to think they should pay a little more to get a freestanding home (mine is a halfplex) even if it has fewer bedrooms. Who knows? We can't change that it's a halfplex so we need to decide how much to lower the price and hope that sparks an offer.
I went into the bank to close out my secure box and found 3 other people doing the same! Turns out the bank branch is closing and they've started sending letters so they get people in every day. I didn't have much of value in mine so it went into the bag and off to the next stop.
At UHaul for boxes, everyone was picking up trucks for end of the month moving which is common this time of year with the local university. The guy greeted me with, "name on the reservation?" and was relieved when I just bought boxes!
I think I can make good progress packing this weekend and then stack everything up in the garage. It feels like I've been packing forever and also like there's nothing left to pack AND that I have so much further to go all at the same time. I'll start packing a few more of the decor items that I've used for staging as it won't make much of a difference. I am almost out of blankets to use for packing (I love a good soft blanket in the winter...) but I did find all the tissue paper in with my gift wrap so I'll use that up next. Hoping to make good progress on the packing and work in the yard when it cools off a little tonight. In fact, I might go out there now (with a good spray of bug repellant!)
To Do List:
Clean out my car - halfway done
Tape up all the boxes I have in the closet to fill
Move finished boxes to the garage Really scrub kitchen floor (I spilled juice all over the floor)
Spread grass seed in backyard Cut back roses in backyard
Pack up paperwork in office Pack 50% of my dresser / hanging clothes Pack 50% of kitchen
Post on Craigslist: -Shoe organizers (2)
-Ikea bookshelves (3) 2 sold!
-Short bookshelf
-Red organizer -White chair -brown nightstand

I just spent 2 hours going through the cards, photos, letters, emails, etc. that were in that box. Many of the letters and emails are going in the recycling on Monday evening.

It’s been a good day of packing and then resting so I don’t burn out. I did sell 2 ikea bookshelves this morning and then posted a bunch more stuff on Craigslist. Hopefully the holiday weekend plus end of month means people have some cash!
I’ve got clothes going in boxes for padding plus towels and most of my dishware is packed. I have a fabric box that’s filling up with weird items like extra shoelaces and medicine and a head scratcher.... I might end up with a single junk box.
I started a box for extension cords and trash bags, one for jewelry and important papers and a third for dog paperwork, meds and toys. If I can sell the random furniture pieces that’ll be $700-800 for the move. I can’t post the couch and kitchen table and my dresser yet thanks to staging but once we get under contract they’ll be for sale!

I had a fairly productive day. The car got washed, which it desperately needed, it was dust gray with a liberal sprinkling of baked on bug guts. It took a little scrubby thing to get the bug guts off the windshield and the front of the car. I also got the lawn mowed before it got too hot. Inside included, sheets changed, laundry done (need to fold last load), bathrooms cleaned, little box cleaned, bills paid and YNAB updated. Monday evening I had canned pears and finally got the jars washed, labeled and put away today.
Tomorrow I will can peaches and then Monday I will go down to DD's and we will work on canning green beans.

Wow, you guys really are on fire! We had our furnace and a/c cleaned and checked for the year. All good, no issues. But before he got here I cleaned out the furnace room. While he was here, (DH was with him) I had the pup in our room (She's not really friendly). So, I cleaned off and polished the dressers. Went through four drawers. Added some things to the donation bag and threw away a few items. I listed a humidifier that we weren't using on Trash to Treasure, that should be picked up today. I finally took the plunge and contacted a friend who does quilting. I kept hanging on to Sierra's old bandanas. She's going to fashion them into a quilt for me. (Been thinking of doing this for over a year, it's finally happening.) So the bandanas are packed up along with a check, those will be mailed Tuesday.

All of you are doing well. startsmart -- I hope that your house sells soon. You did a great job fixing it up. Don't get discouraged. With the start of school, the negative news about the economy and a ton of other issues people are taking a few moments to breathe before making major commitments. Your house will sell just maybe not as fast as you wish. debthaven -- Glad that you have less marking this semester. Your trip sounds like you had a great time and with quality time with family. TheOtherMe -- Congrats on the shedding and getting through those boxes. I am also beginning to get back to some of the ones that I have. Almost finished with one of them. Books of my late DH. Donating them to the library a few at a time. It is more convenient to donate four or five at a time. Otherwise, I have to drop them off at a different and less convenient location.
