any movies that everybody just RAVES about that you can't even sit thru?
the first one that comes to mind for me is 2001: A Space Odyssey. I have tried to watch that movie so many times. Can't make it more than 30 minutes or so.
another one is Magnolia. DH & I kept waiting for it to make sense...then the credits started rolling. Now when we are watching a movie that doesn't seem to be going anywhere, we'll say, "if it starts raining frogs, we're outta here!"

The first Harry Potter movie-when the movie started I had goosebumps because I was transported back to the magic of childhood attending a new Disney movie. 20minutes later I was shifting in my chair bored out of my skull, and that movie lasted forever. It was like 2 different filmmakers made parts of the movie. None of the Harry Potter movies since have been much better, and I can't put my finger on what is wrong. The special effects are good and the story line is good and the actors are good. Something with the way it is filmed.
Benjamin Button-an Oscar?? I stopped watching it 10minutes in and rtned the video without ever finishing it.
Dances with Wolves and Braveheart-I hate historical books and movies.

I agree on Benjamin Button. I did like Dances With Wolves. Never made it thru Braveheart, but that's not my kind of movie.
I didn't get all the Oscar buzz about The Social Network. The movie was ok, it was an interesting story, but nothing special IMO.

OK I'll just say it - since this is the correct place.... We didn't like Avatar! we felt it's a racist movie and got a little offended! I'm mean people wanted to take over the land of the other race...alien race it was horrible! not one person had a negative vibe over the movie1 nothing bad to say about it by the time we got to finally watching it - it was On-Demand on Comcast Cable so it's most likely because everyone in the world loved the movie Avatar is why we don't like it

I've not seen Avatar. DH wanted to see it in IMAX, but that's just not my kind of flick.
Z, I know what you mean about not liking Avatar because everybody else loved it. There have been several movies that I didn't see until they'd been out for quite a while. By the time I saw them, they just couldn't live up to the hype. ET was one. The Blind Side was another.

I like Avatar but did not think the lead actor was that good of an actor, poor choice for that kind of movie.

I just got Avatar in and was about to ask what everyone thought about it. Maybe I'll return it, althouth I've seen bits and pieces when we went looking at TV's the last few weeks and I thought it looked really interesting.

Benjamin Button - I'm not sure who pointed this out, but ask yourself this... if he didn't have the weird backwards aging thing, no one would have even been able to justify making a movie about this boring guy.
Avatar - by your wording, you're watching it the wrong way. First, you're paying attention to the plot. Second, you're watching it at home. This is a 3D pretty picture flick.
Magnolia - I liked it. It came frustratingly close to tying everything together, then missed. I can enjoy a near miss like that. A recent one was The Town. A friend and I disagreed about it. I enjoyed how close it came to succeeding, my friend said it was utterly horrible.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - My wife and I rented it because everybody raved about it. We suffered through about twenty minutes and turned it off.

We went to see The Breakup in theaters. Left after 20 minutes into the movie, got my money back! Few years later saw it on cable watched the first 20 minutes again, turned, turned back somewhere in the middle? just in time to see Jen's bony ass, turned again, turned back to catch the end. It wasn't funny at all! I felt so horrible for the girlfriend that guys do that to women. Then when it's too late he wants to make it right!?? Bullshit! the movie actually makes me upset when watching! I DO ENJOY watching Vince Von - he is funny! but in this movie NOT FUNNY!

I am a huge, huge fan of "The English Patient" and of "The Age of Innoncence." They're both movies I know people think are about as exciting as watching paint dry, but I love them.

Kgb18 I'm guessing you're into documentaries? History network/channel has or had a program called "Life after people" I like the series and almost purchased the box set. well I looked up the cost to purchase the box set and would have purchased if I had friends. then while friends would visit I could play the set while talking or playing cards or games.

I didn't really enjoy Avatar - even though I sat thru it. I kept thinking I'd seen most of the animated scenes done better in a Hayao Miyazaki movie and even the whole Avatar 'nature' theme done better in a Hayao Miyazaki movie. I think Avatar would have been better if it was 20 minutes shorter and if they would have given me a clue as to why the girl blue creature (I can't remember the names as I kept mentally wondering off during the movie) fell in love with the faux boy blue creature. I'm sorry, maybe I'm old or old fashioned or maybe just read too many books - but "he's standing next to me and he's hot" doesn't really make me think "true love" or "I'd die for him".
I couldn't stand "Titanic" -- at one point in the movie theater I was "would everyone just drown already!!! PLEASE!!!"
I had trouble with the second Pirates of the Caribean movie too.
I liked Crouching Tiger - but then I like that 'genre' of movie.
I didn't get "The English Patient"... it did make me want to read the book (cause surely the book would be better!) - which I did and while I wouldn't give the book rave reviews it was more satisfying than the movie.
I haven't really had anyone rave about a movie lately.... I'm not particularly mainstream so I usually avoid the latest ickiness at the show...
What I really hate in a movie is when it gives me a Typical "Western Culture" Expected Happy Ending when a happy ending IS NOT what should have happened.

A movie should
1. Make you laugh or 2. Make you cry or 3. Make you think
If it does none of the three....it is NOT a good movie in my opinion
When a movie can do all three....it is special
Dont you love the feeling when you walk out of a theatre....and you keep "thinking" about what you just saw
That to me is the essence of a great movie

I agree about Titanic. The only thing good about that movie IMO was the recreation of the ship.

I just don't get the fascination... so what's the fascination...
I'm a big movie and film buff, but todays films are pretty much cheap made and repeats of others that have been done over and over.
The Harry potter 1st installment was pretty good, the second part was good as well, but it went downhill from there and yet they keep making them for Potter fans that hope they will get back on track with the books.
Another film, cheap made was Mongolian Death Worms. Cheap computer generated worms that kills people. The cover of it mimicked the film Tremors, although Tremors was pretty good, after part two it went south as well.
Hollyweird needs better writers for their film industries. People just need to stop watching films and going to theaters. wait for the DVD cut of the films, and this will send them a strong message to get their act together, but as long as they have people that go and watch all these remakes and crappy films, then why bother to change the format for the idiots that continue to support them and their crappy films.

Movies i love...
I robot The Village A Walk in the Clouds
I'm weird...
Titanic was good... but i seemed the only person who took away from it the image of a woman, so despondent that she considered suicide, who learned what life is really worth, and from the photos on her bedside, never once forgot it for the rest of her life....
Hayao Miyazaki ... we love him too...
Avatar... i loved the effects... i thought they were well done. I don't mind that storyline, sure i've seen it before, but i like it... but... ok... laugh at me now... but i try to explain to people why i love the Rock n roller coaster at disney... and its the rush that you feel when the blue people take off on their dragons... somehow I was meant to fly... but don't have wings?... I'd watch it again today just for that feeling...
Maybe i shouldn't take allergy medicine??

I don't understand why they have to put naked or semi-naked people in horror films. What does that have to do with being scared? Just play some spooky music and make the scene dark and slowly pan the camera where the ...........GOTCHA!!!

I got pretty much the same thing out of it, and I did enjoy the special effects.
It takes a lot for me to want to go to a theater and see a movie. If one it getting a lot of attention, I usually take that as a sign I won't like it. Something about to much hype makes me want to go the opposite way.
Tim Burton and Quentin Terantino are two directors that I just don't get why everyone raves about them. My daughter loves Burton's movies, but they creep me out. I never saw Pulp Fiction but tried to watch Jackie Brown and just didn't get it - I was bored senseless.
I love bad SyFy disaster movies and love zombie movies. Action or suspense movies are usually my choice when I go to RedBox. The BF likes frat boy comedies which I can't stand. And the occasional chic flick.
The last hyped movie I saw was that Matt Damon movie that Clint Eastwood directed. I only went because my Mom wanted to see it. It was soooo boring and depressing I was happy to get out of there when it ended.

I've come to learn that if a movie is advertised all over the place, it's not worth seeing. A good movie is a good movie, and it doesn't need tons of advertising to make it better.
The last movie I saw that was "hyped?" The King's Speech. Well deserved hype that only began generating lots of over the top ads once Oscar season came around.
