to some third world countries...I would think his latest comments , would make our State Department and UN people jobs a bit more difficult. This is our POTUS talking....not some beered guy at the end of a bar coming out to tell us his ideas of how the world should be run. Is it asking to much to hold the SS folks down while some one in authority slap our POTUS silly as they explain this is not how u refer to others who u want to impress and make nice too...Even those not referred directly to...left out of his address with his vernacular, must be shocked and dismayed...and also amused at the gauch way this loser acts... He is a joke and it gets worse every minute of every day...Can't wait to hear how his talking heads explain this latest foo pa. ---------------------------------------- "President Donald Trump grew frustrated with lawmakers Thursday in the Oval Office when they floated restoring protections for immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal, according to two people briefed on the meeting. "Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?" Trump said, according to these people, referring to African countries and Haiti. =============================== www.courant.com/nation-world/ct-trump-immigrants-shithole-countries-20180111-story.html

Oh, I'm sure that "shithole countries" is just Trump's sarcasm, as per SCP.

This is our POTUS talking....not some beered guy at the end of a bar coming out to tell us his ideas of how the world should be run. But, this is one of the reasons he was elected. Calling these countries third world or any thing nicer would sound educated...and remember, sounding educated is bad.

More raw meat for his base. Dozens of members on our board have used the exact same words when referring to various foreign countries, including some commenting in this thread (who I will do the courtesy of not naming). When Dark (Sum Dum Gai) was still here on the board, he stated at one point "This is going to sound cold, but I don't pay taxes to feed orphans in third world shitholes."--which was a statement 'liked' by almost every American contributor to the thread at that point (9 prominent members). So... while the comment may resonate with his base supporters, they certainly aren't the only ones who agree with him.

However, this is the POTUS! He's supposed to have a modicum of decorum, and not alienate and insult every damn country in the world!

Virgil...I've never assumed there was only 1 complete asshole in America. But Sum Dum Gai is not only not the POTUS, I doubt you can find any post from that person that finds the KKK to be wonderful people. And how interesting a Canuckian turns apologista for Americans using such bad language. Usually you are more of a scold.

I consider the entire Middle East to be a shithole. I'll admit it.
However, I am not the POTUS and have nothing to do with leading this country.
He suggested we need new immigrants from places like Norway. You know, white folks.
Hitler II is emerging more and more each day.

"we like him because he talks like us!" I think at this point we can safely change that to, "we like him because he's racist like us!"

Could this guy be any worse? He is supposed to be representing our entire country. He's not only an embarrassment to the US, he's an embarrassment to humanity. Please tell me he's going to resign, and soon!

I'm not a fan of profanity generally, whether from leaders or from peers on a message board. I don't make much of a distinction.
Who knows how many times foreign nationals stumble across our little corner of paradise. What do they behold? Americans (and Canadians, in some cases) calling their home countries every name in the book. If the people invoking these names cared about foreigners' feelings and perceptions, it stands to reasons the very least they could do is avoid epithets. Which they don't. Because right or wrong, they prefer frankness to diplomacy.
And fine. I've called specific Third World countries "backwaters", "dustbowls", "wastelands", "cesspits", and other unflattering things. (Even the term "Third World" is considered a pejorative.) The difference being that I don't cluck my tongue when others do the same.
The simple fact is that Pres. Trump is saying what a good chunk of YMAM is thinking, offending a group of people YMAM has no qualms offending--and not just red-blooded pro-Trump conservatives. He's YMAM's voice to the world.

please do not insult a large percentage of the board. I doubt it's a "large" percentage, especially if we include "likes" of posts deriding foreign countries, but you're right: my comment need not apply to the entirety of our membership.

I'll say "a definite majority of P/CE" based on a cursory search of the epithet Pres. Trump used. The rest of the board, I don't know. They don't often have occasion to speak about Third World countries.

Expectations are a bit higher for the POTUS when speaking publically.

Expectations are a bit higher for the POTUS when speaking publically. Why should they be? Why should we be any less concerned about how our own comments are perceived by the world than we are about how the US President's are perceived? Because we're less important and our opinions don't matter? Because we're not technically ambassadors or representatives for our country, so why bother? It's a serious question.

Totally immaterial whether members of thus board do or don’t use vulgar euphimisms. Expectations are a bit higher for the POTUS when speaking publically. Except that wasn't Trump's appeal. Educated is not appealing anymore. Speech is one way we try to identify those that are "like us" and those that aren't. I'm guessing that there's more folks than we'd care to think that are just fine with it. Folks didn't want an educated politician. They wanted someone that sounded like them to be POTUS. And that's what we have. I'm meh about it personally.
