Sorry I am so far behind and haven't updated. Struggling right now. My son was walking home on Oct 19 and hit by a driver. He/She never stopped. From the store video, it looks intentional. He was given chest compression and CPR at the site, taken to nearest hospital and then life flight to a major hospital. He spent 3 days in ICU, 6 days on a regular ward, then 11 days in rehab. He has 2 skull fractures and a broken shoulder which is amazing in itself. However, he struggles finding the language for what he needs to express himself. He has several months of outpatient therapy before he will be able to return to teaching. So far only seen a bill for the Life Flight and that was almost $54k. Got some long months ahead and with all the time off I have taken and all the traveling to be with him, my savings is derailed. I am going to take a break until the first of the year and regroup.
Keep up the good job savers! Teachermom
I liked your post but I certainly DO NOT like it. It was acknowledgement of your post and situation rather than liking the situation. Please tell me the police are trying to find the driver. In the meantime, hugs

Thank you all for your prayers. Yes, the cops are trying to find the driver....no luck so far. There is a video put not very clear as to the car. You can see the driver clearly run him over (not something a parent ever wants to see) and most who have seen it and comment feel it was intentional. The driver never hit his/her brakes. Just kept driving. He weighs 250lbs and hit your windshield.....you know they knew. So far the bills.....$54k for the helicopter, 1 hospital bill $93k, and xrays $600. They are just starting to roll in. Something I have learned from this is that your auto insurance pays even if you weren't in your car. So make sure you have enough personal injury coverage.

I'm glad that the police are looking into this, cause that hellish damn person needs to pay for this.
And I'm asking the spirits to help the police with this. In every crime the criminal leaves enough evidence, that this damn shit will be caught. I've asked that if there is another video of this horror that the video shows everything clearly and the police get it.
I'm asking the Universe to bring in the FBI on this. ALL law hands on deck!

Oct Shoutouts Part 1 of 2: teachermom Thank you for checking in and letting us know what has been going on with you and your son. We are here to support you every way we can, and it's a helpful reminder that life turns on a dime, planning and saving ahead can't stop these types of hardships but it can reduce the stress a little if our finances are less precarious. Our best wishes for steady recovery. Please keep us informed. trimatty471 Good job breaking into the 90+% range, and sweet $16K just ahead! snapdragon Congrats on $13958. looking forward to you busting the $14K, and probably the $15K soon. Also eager to hear about your travelling adventures (I know you can't get to Budapest, Vienna, and Prague by car, but we don't have an airplane in the emoji lineup.) shanendoah On track for your primary goal rocks!! How is it going with the house for sale?? seriousthistime Nice savings bump of nearly 2 GRAND in October! Your weekly challenge table is looking like a full house party , and shows how very close we are to wrapping up another saving year. sealy I'm glad you shared and vented what happened with your son being scammed. It's criminal, and shameful that scammers use lies that play on our caring for our loved ones. It's very hard to earn an honest living, and then we also have to protect ourselves from those who prefer to make an easier dishonest living. Sharing these events and the details may help the next honest person avoid such a scam. I remember trying to help my MIL avoid scams, and now starting to feel more vulnerable myself. It feels very violating to experience. I'm sorry you and your son had this happen. Sadly it's important that we keep an open conversation about the methods scammers are using and continue to invent. Keep your chin up and your head up. Congrats on securing your summer pay money. Saving4Norway Amazing work achieving an additional $4K in savings and achieving 133% of goal so far

holy shit! sending healing love your way. one thing I want to point out, reading your post as someone who has sustained a bunch of concussions over the years - he has a brain injury. he's going to have moments where he can't find the words he knows he should be able to find. you will be doing him a favor if you can explain this to him, and help him stay calm in those moments when he can't find the words. frustration will only serve to raise his BP enough to cause a splitting headache and set him back in recovery. a concussion is a bruise, just on the brain. he needs to let that bruise heal, and unfortunately that takes time.

Snapdragon 11/12/18 --- $ 13,045.43 / $ 18,700 -- UpdateCar/House $ 2708.26 / $3500 Savings $ 4029.89 / $4000 Travel $ 3045.83 / $4500 Property Taxes $ 1385.61 / $2200 Lasik $ 1875.84 / $ 4500 New Totals $ 13,045.43 / $18,700 I just came back from Europe and let me just say that I was wiped for the whole weekend attempting to get back in the groove. Those long plane flights are torture if you are in general seating. I did a bus tour and met a new friend and had a really decent time doing it. Budapest was amazing and my favorite city of the three I visited. Just so much to enjoy and experience with the 2 areas separated by the Danube. Vienna seemed very snobbish yet pretty. I climbed the steps of the Cathedral and got some good exercise by than going into the catacombs underneath about 10 minutes later. My feet were really tired that day. Prague was confusing to me. I was outside of Old and New town and not close to the center of the city. I felt like it was very much a warren or maze of a city in the center. I did a night walking tour of the Charles Bridge and than saw it in the light of day which was better. There was a excellent restaurant on the Voltava that my friend and I ate at with amazing views of the water and sights. I was proud that I managed to navigate all 3 cities in our off time with my wingman and we saw what we wanted to see and had fun doing it. I really missed my bed and was so happy to be able to sleep comfortably these last few days.

Sending you hugs and healing wishes to your family teachermom. I really hope there is a resolution for what happened. I hope the police have put the video out in the news so that maybe if someone saw something they can come forward.

It was fun but hectic. I don't believe that I could do a trip like I did every year or couple of years but I could certainly do a tour trip like every 5 years or so. But I think I want more time either at the beginning or the end of the tour so I could relax and rejuvenate before having to hop on a plane. I also know that I need to upgrade the next time I am flying international. General just does not work when you are flying from the west coast to Europe or back.

Thanks for all your kind words. We are taking it one day at a time. No luck finding the person. The video has been shared/watched over 27K times. They have followed all leads they received but nothing more in a while. Unfortunately, I think they person has gotten away without any repercussion.....so hard to not want them to have to pay for what they have done, but I am thankful it wasn't worse and my son will return to normal soon without long lasting effects. teachermom my DH was disabled when he was run over by a cement truck 7 years ago (he was on a bicycle, on a bike path). Turns out the company had just stopped paying insurance. The driver didn't know, because the truck had an insurance sticker. The owner/manager of the company (not clear which) fled the country. We have been fighting for a settlement since DH's accident 7 years ago. Because the company's fleet was not insured, DH is fighting the French government's "victim fund" (here, it's for hit-and-runs and/or victims of uninsured drivers). So I understand how difficult it is when there's no concrete other party. I am thankful it wasn't worse and my son will return to normal soon without long lasting effects.
I am thrilled to know that your son will recuperate! I know it will take time, but the important thing is that he will get there.

Today DH "loaned" us our share of the rental building reno. I offered to pay him back from savings but he said he'll pay himself back from his settlement (if/when it ever comes).
So although we now "owe" DH 3.9K euros, that's the second item I planned to use our savings for, and didn't. (The first was renovating DS2's bedroom and turning it into DH's office. That room still has a bed, it's still unofficially a guest room for DS1/DS2/older guests.) DH knows that if he needs that money we can take it out of savings, but for now it's still there.
We still owe 2.8K on the kitchen loan. I had planned to take that out of savings too, but now my goal is to pay it off WITHOUT using savings. It's down to 16 months now. I'm trying very hard to make double payments every month.
So even if I am not officially a "saver" anymore, thank you all again.

debthaven Thanks for sharing your experience. We are working with Victims of Violent Crimes.....so far no one has been caught so not sure how that will play into things. He had an appointment yesterday with an audiologist. He is basically deaf in one ear....they aren't sure if he will regain any hearing in it.....so another thing to deal with and figure out. We have thought all along that it was just from the fluid that was draining out that ear from the skull fracture but possibly more than that.

shanendoah: 25-November 2018 $2,400 (Goal: $2,500/stretch $5,000)
I know it's not Nov 25 yet, but it is this Sunday, and my paycheck will be deposited and the $50 will go automatically to savings, so I will meet that goal. I am not going to meet the stretch goal. Looks like our house will close on 12/21 (happy birthday to me), and with any luck, we will close on the house we put an offer in on on 12/28, so moving extra funds into savings until the New Year at the earliest. In addition, we haven't gotten the Open Adoption Agreement for Pop Tart settled yet, so I still have my lawyer and a retainer for my lawyer. Once we get everything settled, and my case is closed, I'll get my retainer back. But, since our new mortgage payment will be about $1k more per month than our current mortgage payment, we're looking at using most money to get some debt paid down and then fund some things we'll need for the new house without debt (new washer/dryer, closet organizer system - the master closet doesn't even have a bar across it currently, etc.).

teachermom - Thinking about you and your son. I know the only reason my MIL financially survived her car accident (recliner fell off the truck in front of her car, on the interstate, going full speed) when the driver was uninsured (or very under insured, don't remember which) was her own uninsured driver policy and the fact that she was technically at work, and therefore workers' comp covered it. Without those two things, she would have lost everything. I hope very much that the Crime Victims Fund is able to help you. And I will hold out hope that something pops up on the driver.

forwardwego My summer pay is now up to 3K. I am following Dave Ramsey but I want to put 5K in there to be on the safe side. I want to pay off my personal loan I got this summer but may just continue to pay the minimum. I have to pay my discover down because it's now at 19K. I'm so sad about that balance. I'm practically 50K in debt. I was almost debt free. I try to focus on the important things in life but sometimes I feel like this debt is going to stay too long. Praying everything works out soon.

This month of November has flown by, we are looking right at December 1st! One more paycheck this week to see where we land for the month. I also have a large CC bill due December 1st, which will be paid in full, so have to get my brain and spreadsheets back out after a fun holiday weekend .

Well, this is it for me for 2018 unless some unexpected snowflake money falls my way. I still have one more paycheck for November coming on Friday, but I have December's budget all allocated already so might as well post while I'm thinking of it. I missed a few goals, but it was a rough year with losing my PT job and I had really focused on upping my 401K which isn't on here. Fund | 2018 Goal
| Current | Needed | % Complete
| Survival Fund
| $6000 | $6000 | $0 | 100.00% | 2019 Roth
| $5500 | $5300 | $200 | 96.36% | House Maint

plugginaway22, 12/1/18 $20,212 (goal $16,800)
EF online $5,412 EF brickB $13,000
EF tax esc $1800
totals $20,212
HSA acct now at $7136
I am behind and have not bought one thing for Christmas presents and DH and I want to go someplace warm in February, so will see if I can hold onto this for month of December. Next year I won't track the sinking fund of tax escrow, which is on autopilot and gets sucked away twice a year.

Dear Savers, if you haven't already done so, please post your updates for November. I will be doing the smilies on the morning of Sunday, December 2.
EEK! December! Where has the year gone?
Have you begun to think about 2019 goals yet? Financial and otherwise? The new year will soon be upon us. If you have a chance, please post your thoughts about what you'd like to accomplish, even if they are not fully finalized.

Update on Savings Goals #2-11/29/2018
2018 Secondary | START | CURRENT | GOAL | STILL NEED | E.F. | $2000.00 | $2188.29 | $2500.00 | $311.71 | GENERAL SAVINGS | $95.00 | $220.00 | $500.00 | $280.00 | TOTALS | $2095.00 | $2408.29 | $3000.00 | $591.71 |
NikiZ628(2) 11/29/18 $2408.29 (Goal $3000.00 WIRS14)
I had to tap into the general savings to pay a doctor bill, so that fund continues to do its job! My automatic savings deposits end this week (helps me free up a little bit of $$ for last minute Christmas shopping), so this is probably going to be it for the year for me. H is still waiting on his Christmas bonus, so depending on what that ends up being, I may be able to hit that stretch goal for our EF (fingers crossed). His boss mentioned a pay raise again, so I am hoping that pans out as well. I paused my 2019 budget planning for now to see if that happens (again FINGERS CROSSED). That would affect our savings goals for next year as well, so as much as I hate it, I am in a holding pattern on my numbers game.

Seriousthistime, 11/30/18, $20,755 (Goal $20,498) Weekly Savings chart:Another rose! And I topped off my Survival Fund this time around. And then I added it all up and found I have exceeded my overall 2018 goal because I added more to some funds than I have deficits in others, so I expect with the next paycheck I'll finish it all off and be done with 2018 savings And then it's on to 2019.

Update: Maryland_Monroe $19,142 11/30/18 (Goal $20,000) In December, I have quarterly and semi-annual payments due on insurance and taxes. I don't think I'll hit $20,000 until January, but that's fine with me. Not that long ago, a small emergency would have caused a money crisis.
I edited my post because I entered the wrong amount yesterday. I keep my finances on a spreadsheet and added the wrong cells together.

Back from our Disney cruise last week - it was phenomenal. We did concede to putting $250 down for a deposit to cruise again in the next 2 yrs which gets us a $200 onboard credit and 10% off cruise; Disney never goes on sale. It's refundable for the 2 yr window so seemed like a no-brainer.
I forgot that we put a chunk of the spending on a different card so when I first checked the balance I was thinking it was too low and that we did better than I thought. The $250 plus $600 on board charges were on the second card. Still not terrible for a fabulous vacation. It worked out to be a double paycheck day today with mine being the third paycheck of the month. Along with the automatic extra mortgage payment, I was able to put some money in savings.
I haven't updated in a while, so this is a lump of Nov. Some money went out of savings and some went in. Net effect:
11/30/18 Azucena $1,248 deposit for $16,678 (67% of $25,000 goal)

Dear Savers, if you haven't already done so, please post your updates for November. I will be doing the smilies on the morning of Sunday, December 2. EEK! December! Where has the year gone? Have you begun to think about 2019 goals yet? Financial and otherwise? The new year will soon be upon us. If you have a chance, please post your thoughts about what you'd like to accomplish, even if they are not fully finalized. I just listed my house yesterday. I need to downsize (too much yard work for one person). I am saving for moving expenses for 2019. I was under contract with the alarm company and Verizon. I may have to pay a termination fee for both. If I need to make any required repairs to the house, I want to be prepared.

The year is ending on a good note here. I was able to put a bit more into the ER fund, as well as set an unexpected $250 aside for my "big kids" (DSD and DSS). My DH has upped his hours at work, which is allowing us to replenish our savings a bit faster, which is a huge relief. We didn't come anywhere near our final goal for the year, but I'm feeling a little more confident as we move into 2019. (I still don't understand how we're in DECEMBER!!!) Once we empty the tax fund to pay our property taxes in January, I'll have a few hundred dollars left over, which will either go into the ER fund, or bump up the big kids fund even more. I am going to be able to put another $2000 away in December, to replenish our younger kids' savings funds too. I don't track that savings here, so I'm hoping to finalize that in 2018. I am down to the final few presents - a $100 donation to a local food pantry in my parents' names, two mass cards for my grandparents, and some candy and toys for one of the therapists who sees my son - everything else is pretty much taken care of! Phew. Besides those few presents, and ingredients for Christmas cookies, I am going to try my best to do a "no spend" December. I have our approximate savings plan mapped out for 2019, and look forward to upping our savings ASAP. I want to focus on making and sticking to a budget in 2019. That has always been a struggle for me! Anyway - here's to a healthy, peaceful, and fun holiday season for all!
