I focused on the Survival Fund this time around. Overall, with 3/4 of my paychecks received for the year, I'm right on track. I'm continuing to save for the Household fund because I don't track money spent here, and money has been spent from that fund. The balance is rather low, and the need is ongoing.

Congratulations, nikiz628! I can't wait for you to meet your secondary goal, too. Have you thought about goals for 2019? It's never too early for us to think about 2019 goals. Does anyone have any ideas they're mulling over, doing things differently, trying something new? Attention Savers: September 30 is a Sunday. To give everyone the chance to get their September savings posted, I'll be doing the updates on Tuesday evening, October 2. Be sure to get your updates in before then.

I am going to join this thread. I wanted to wait until I paid off the credit card to start savings, but some savings opportunities have a now or never aspect to them. For instance, IRA accounts. My savings goal right now is for my 2018 IRA. I currently have $2,620.55 in my savings account. My goal is $5,500.00 by April 15, 2019. Wish me luck! I'm still stuck in the same place.
I have new monthly expenses and I feel overwhelmed. Had to buy a newer car, now I have car payments and higher insurance bill.
Fortunately, I haven't had to touch the amount I already have in savings for the 2018 IRA. My mom arrives in a few days and she usually brings me money from her and my brother as a birthday gift. Other years I didn't mind, but this time I need the cash infusion. I feel so embarrassed that I am looking forward to it.
The other thing is that my manager increased my yearly bonus from 3 percent to 10 percent with my promotion. So even if I cannot add any more to my savings, I should be able to reach my goal with the bonus in mid-March.
Finally get to update here. My mother and my brother were very generous. Thanks to them I now have $5,080.08 in my 2018 IRA account. Since I will get a bonus in March, I am certain I will reach the goal. Right now my priority shifts. We are basically at the end of September and I have to start saving for my year-end expenses. Since I travel for the holidays I have to get $250 for the cat-sitter, $150 for airport transportation, and $100 as a Christmas gift for my only nephew. After that I'll be back to finishing my IRA 2018 savings, and then start with my next goal.

Ah, Christmas.... I have two children, their partners, seven grandchildren (one married), and my mother. Part of my savings account is $50 per month for Christmas gifts. Everybody gives me an Amazon wish list or something I can easily get locally (gift cards/cash), and they know their limit is $50 each. I ask them to make the wish list big enough for me to have choices so they won't be absolutely sure what they're getting from me, but I'm sure it's something they want.

Does anyone have any ideas they're mulling over, doing things differently, trying something new? I have started to toss around goal ideas for next year. I usually start working on my budget for the next year in October, so I will have a better idea what's coming/what we can do then! Our budget is generally pretty close to being the same every year, but I may try and overhaul it completely to see if it works out for us better. I am a numbers nerd, so playing budget/money is fun for me

Christmas time is expensive no matter how you slice it. I have dialed it down big time, but still. Since it's my vacation time and I spend the holidays with my family in the old country, I used to bring two suitcases filled to the brim. Not anymore. Not only was it expensive to buy stuff to bring as gifts, but also carrying them around was difficult. Now I only bring one medium size suitcase with me. But I have to pay someone to take care of my cat, pay for transportation to and from the airport, get a gift for my nephew, etc. I am always around the $500 to $600.

I scratched a woman's car this summer. Her repairs were 300 euros. We decided not to go through our insurance companies because we have a 300e deductible.
I sent her a check earlier this month. (We had agreed that we'd get back in touch in Sept.) I sent her the 300 euros I had saved for the computer. DH told me to take it out of household but I didn't want to because it was my fault.
Back to square one.
Also, we decided that we need a new (to us) car sooner than later. So although I'm going to try to resave that money in the next few months, my priority now is paying down the kitchen loan rather than saving for a computer so that we can get a new(er) car. (We don't want two consumer loans at the same time if we can help it.) We also have to pay 3.9K for the very badly-needed building reno where our studio is. In good news, DH's new company is paying for DS2's bedroom reno, because it will become his office (as well as a guest room for our kids/elderly visitors).
So I'm backing out of the savers thread for now, but I'm still reading here and cheering you all on! If my computer dies (Gd forbid) I will have to take out an Apple loan.

Am I the only one with an Excel file who checks every day? Charts out when money will come in to start plumping back up the reserves? (Tomorrow or Friday, and then again on Tuesday, in case you're curious!) And somewhat obsessively charts out savings goals per pay period with guesstimated expenditures over the next year?
I know you're not supposed to wish time away, but we're THISCLOSE to adding money back INTO our accounts rather than draining it out, for pretty much the first time in about 12 months.
"Get in my bank acount $$$$$$$!" yelled a la, "Git in ma' belly!" 😂

Lazysundays 9-29-18 $7885/$60,000 by spring 2020 13.1% of goal
bare minimum saved this month. I'm holding on to some cash because the ceiling by the fireplace started leaking, AND the dog just got diagnosed with cataracts. We are taking her to a specialist, but if she does have the aggressive cataracts that require surgery, they are already warning me that it will be around $4000 per eye. yikes. I hope it's the easy old age one that doesn't cause blindness just makes it harder to see with age. If it's the aggressive one, I figure we apply for a 5% loan with peer-to-peer lending. Her eyesight is more important than worrying about the $. But damn! that's a lot of money for the surgery.

Slowly, but surely. We're filling back up the accounts! I only anticipate being able to save another $8k before the end of the year, give or take, so we'll end up falling well short of our initial goals unfortunately. But, the van is paid off, and we are going to be able to put back at least SOME of the money from our ER fund. I think we started the year pretty depleted all around, so progress is progress. I'd like to say we've turned the corner, but truly, only time will tell. It takes a long time to build back up the saving momentum, that's for sure! If all goes well, *insert wild laughter here*, by this time next year, ALL of our accounts will be fully funded. (If we hadn't paid off the van this year, we would have met ALL of our savings goals. Proof that we CAN do it. It's just a matter of actually *doing* it.) Next up - savings for Christmas spending! It's nice to have a dedicated savings line for that. We tend to spend all of that, plus a smidge more, so my big goal over the next few months is to keep our gift & holiday spending under a close watch!

Shoutouts part 1 of 2: trimatty471 Congratulations on achieving over $13K and over 77%! Earning and on target for your yearly goal!! tobinikui Congrats on riding in your paid for van, that feels amazing, right? You had nice growth of $3762 since August, and squeezing out another $8K would push you past the $40K mark. Keep on swimming! teachermom Hola! Hoping you're settling into the new school year, and looking forward to your next update! snapdragon Good job bumping up another $339. Thinking of you as you prepare for your travels and adventures. I think you may come back powered up for even more savings! Also love the goal of lasik in 2020 shanendoah Nice job with consistent saving. I hope the house will sell soon, and you can regroup for a new savings goal! seriousthistime Thank you for your work on the September updates and smileys! Good job on a solid saving month as well as covering some hefty expenses! Congrats on earning your second and third !!! sealy good job on maintaining your $1K EF, and on checking in regularly!! Please check in when you've knocked off that camera debt so I can celebrate with you! We're glad you are here. Good job recognizing that difficult summer budgeting time, looks like you are prepared to make a plan and priority of winning that challenge for summer 2019! Saving4Norway Good job putting your raise to work! Two grand in one month is TOO GRAND plugginaway22 Well done socking away the bonus and growing your savings by "pert near" $6K! Dancing banana coming your way any minute now. Though you have plans for spending some of the newly saved money, there are benefits of first adding it in to savings. It's important to fully acknowledge the money in order to track where it goes, and to build the habit of technically saving it first. I hope you're enjoying the fresh new mattress set in comfort. I personally love the mini makeover of new kitchen cabinet knobs. Sometimes these little luxuries can keep us contented and saving without feeling deprived.

Nothing significant added to the Survival Fund this time because I used the extra to cover some hefty expenses this month.

I've not been saving, but spending what I would have saved. I went to DNephew's wedding in Boston which with gift cost about $1000 and bought tickets to see a Capitals' game for DH's birthday this month, another $300. I think I'm done now!

Ok I have to find my savings tag line. I now have $1,000 EF and $1,000+ in my summer pay. I'm getting a check for over 1K but I need to pay my insurance and so I think I'll try to keep 1K and the extra will stay in my checking account to pay the insurance. I am thinking that I'll save until December and then start my snowball. I paid off Best Buy again because I needed to buy my son a camera. I also need to pay 200 for the squirrels that are trying to stay under my house. It's pretty reasonable considering the other pest control people were going to charge more.

sealy does your job give you the option of being paid over 12 months? I'm an adjunct so I don't earn earn much. I work at two universities. One pays the following month for any hours worked. But my main school gives us the option of getting the money spread over 12 months, so at least I get something over the summer months. And add me to the club of having gone years with no EF and not enough money.
Does your school or community have a summer program where you could work?
No the whole entire district would have to agree to be paid 12 months but they said no so we're on 11. I'm working on saving more this month and next. I have to have more taken out of my account for taxes.
