They offer 1 yr credit monitoring including lock/unlock your report. I want 10 yr. This appears to be a huge data breach that includes ssn, dob, names, addresses, and in some cases driver license numbers, credit card numbers. And it affects not just Americans but also Canadians and British.

If I'm in it then it's at least the third time all of my stuff has been exposed. My health insurance company got hacked, OPM got hacked and now this.

I figure life lock or what ever the name of that company is will be next! I don't know how that works but got to assume they have all your info so they can "protect" it. I got got caught up in the Target breach and then later in the Home Depot breach. Thank goodness nothing came of it with the exception that visa and mc kept reissuing cards like forever. ![](http://syonidv.hodginsmedia.com/vsmileys/faint.gif) Eta glad I opened this thread reminds me that I haven't pulled my credit report this year.

Wonder why this hasn't been reported sooner. Breach was July 29. Gave executives time to sell off stock??

Sometimes I think I have better protection on my PC than these yokels/large companies. I also check my CC like a hawk. Been considering closing two of them since I no longer use either. They are my two oldest and except that I may be buying a car after 1st of year. Going to pay cash but will be shopping insurance so don't want credit score to take a hit.

I did check the link and was given a date when I can apply for credit monitoring.
The husband of one of my friend's checked and his account was hacked. He was able to do everything immediately.

I found this: To find out if you’ve been affected, you can check on a website Equifax has set up in response to the hack: www.equifaxsecurity2017.com. At the bottom of the page, the company directs you to a link titled “Potential Impact,” which allows you to see if your information is safe. The catch? You have to provide your last name and the last six digits of your Social Security number.

Their potential impact tool is a joke. Says if you enter your last name and the last SIX digits of your social security number, you will get a message whether you are affected or not. Now, six digits is a heck of a lot to be entering into a site that has already proven they can't be responsible with your personal information, but what the hell, if it's hacked, it's hacked.
Apparently there are three different messages you could have gotten. 1) You were NOT affected. 2) You were DEFINITELY affected, sign up for credit monitoring right now. Or the innocuous 3) Thanks! You can enroll in credit monitoring beginning 09/xx/17. Better write it down because we aren't sending you any reminders! Enrollment closes November xx.
#3 doesn't tell you definitively one way or the other if you were exposed. Supposedly, they are also contacting 'some' people by email and snail mail if their credit card numbers and driver's license numbers were also compromised.
I plugged in my info and got #3. Plugged in my husband's info and also got #3. Tried my daughter's info, who has no credit history, and got #1, which is as it should be.
If you read the fine print of their year of free credit monitoring, you are waiving your rights to arbitration later. So when class action suits start happening, you wouldn't be able to participate.
I read people saying that when they tried to sign up for the credit monitoring on their own, it wouldn't process. And other people saying when they'd go to get a free copy of their report from one of those free sites, the Equifax report wouldn't process and they'd have to get it by snail mail. And the phone number they set up to field calls from irate people is manned by an outside company that has no information about who was affected or not, and just directs you back to their website, which has no info on it.

No way in hell am I giving them the last six of my social. I'll just continue to monitor my accounts just like with every other major security breach.

At any rate I already did it.
My Daughter and I are affected, my DH and Son are not.
Trippypea: I clicked on their offer to sign up for a year of Free Credit Monitoring. I did not see any disclosure that we would be waiving the right to participate in a class action lawsuit later on - does that come when you actually go in to sign up?

Because I typically just don't do these things, that's all. I'm cynical.

WXYZ, I am in the process of opening a new HELOC, but once it goes through I think I will Freeze my credit.
wouldn't they have gotten your credit card numbers in the breach, so wouldn't your existing Credit cards be at risk though?

hmm..... I went to check to see if my name was on the list, and it gave me an enrollment date with no other commentary. This is suspect to me. I wonder if this is a huge scam to scare people into buying into their protection.

I haven't looked at it too closely though.

I like wxyz's idea of freezing your credit at each of the bureaus. I closed on my condo back in July and don't plan to open any other loans within the next few years (maybe a car in 4-5 years and even then it may be a cash transaction). I like the idea of no one being able to pull my credit to obtain a loan in my mane without it being unfrozen.
