Tampa General is already preparing because regardless of where the storm goes, there is only one way off and on the island. When the winds hit 40mph the bridge is closed. So that's it. The volunteer office is complaining about having to set up and do daycare for the employees that have to stay. Plus they closed schools today and tomorrow for no reason because if we get anything at all it'll be Sunday and Monday.

If they suspect even one drop of ice in the winter where I live then the schools close. There have been a few times when there was zero precipitation and no school.

It's hit or miss though. The west coast which currently is just gov to get rain and tropical storm force winds closed today. But the east coast that's going to get a lot more only has some closing tomorrow. My work still hasn't given any guidance on if we're coming in tomorrow even though we're expecting the first of the storm not long after end of work on Fri.

I just texted my sister, she lives in an evacuation zone. They have waterfront property. She and her husband have to stay because they need to be available for work. I'm worried. I'd be worried, too! This darned thing is huge and its retained its power for much longer than is usually the case. When its winds are being recorded on seismographs, that gets my attention! I hope your friends come through this unscathed. I can't imagine a company requiring its workers to disobey a mandatory evacuation order.

I would think that hospitals would also be evacuated so I'm not sure why doctors/nurses need to stay behind but I'm obviouslyl not in the medical field.

I was working in a hospital on the South Carolina coast when Hugo paid its visit. We stayed at the hospital (slept all over the floor in the cafeteria - it was fun!). Yes, sometimes it's necessary to have staff available. I wasn't talking about hospitals or other absolutely critical businesses. I imagine a lot also depends on where you are. In some cases hospitals are evacuated and that's a real nightmare which isn't undertaken unless the threat is very, very serious.

Babies show up whenever they want, and don't care if a hurricane is going on. He is a cardiologist. People have heart attacks during hurricanes.

The stress of a natural disaster tends to increase the presentation of births, heart attacks, and strokes, among other things. Hope your sister and husband come through unscathed.

People have heart attacks during hurricanes. Well then it's their own fault. Extremely poor planning for not picking a non-emergency specialty like Dermatology or Podiatry.

Just in case: TheHaitian, DM @repswalwell on Twitter if you've lost contact with family members in the Caribbean. He can help. This would apply, of course, to anyone who has a problem contacting someone in that area. I happened to see his tweet this morning and wanted to be sure to share it.

Just for kicks peeps, open google maps on your phones and turn on the traffic layer. The interstates are just about solid red the length of the state. There really is nowhere to go. When my parents had to evacuate during Hurricane Rita, they were living between Houston and Galveston. They traveled west and it took 13 hours to go about 50 miles.

Is there really only two roads out of FL? I'd be hitting all the backroads.

Has anyone else seen the ohoto of earth from space showing both Irma and Jose? Irma is bigger than the width of FL.

We once got caught behind an accident coming from the Everglades, traffic just stopped. Going 'around' would have been miles and hours, so everyone just waited. Some kind of extra large grid.

The last time I drove to Florida, we took highway 1 out. I think, along the coast. We were also getting some winds from the remnants of a hurricane, which wasn't the most pleasant.

The problem is, with a storm this big the only way to really escape is to go north and then west. You're talking a six hour drive minimum from central Florida on a good day. My employer is letting us go two hours early on Friday. Basically would give us 24 hours to get out if we wanted to. At that late of time it'd take 24 hours and you'd still be in the path of the hurricane.

I guess I would lose my job as I would be out of there. I've been through 2 hurricanes and some tropical storms and no way would I stay for this, would have been gone already. That is one big mother.......

That is one big mother....... While it is big, the horrible destructive area is not that big. It's not small, but only about a fourth of it is hurricane force and even smaller at the 185mph. The rest is just tropical storm. Which frankly they rarely close anything for. Not to say it's nothing, but most of the shitty buildings were blown away years ago so it's not like small winds will kill it. Walking away from a job is not an easy or simple thing.

The strongest wind I've experienced was 85 with gusts to 110. It was scary. Very scary.

If I had a storm with 185 mph winds headed my way, I'd be doing everything in my power to get out.

There's only a small part that will get those high winds and they are under evacuation. It'll be a lot less when it gets further up the state.

Ivan in 2004 produced the most at 120 according to information on The Weather Channel. Tornadoes occur in the storm bands up to 250 miles from the eye.

But tornados occur way more often in tornado alley and people don't quit their job and evacuate every tornado season.
