Several years ago my boss and bosses boss ( both male) wouldn't let me join in on their 3 month weight loss bet. I told them they were not treating me fair because I was a woman and they knew I could beat them. Maybe it was also the fact that I was 8 months pregnant that they were worried about.

I have been doing a variety of exercise routines for a year. No change in weighy. This week I gave up sugar, dairy, gluten and wine to see if it would solve my pain problems. I lost 3 pounds. Gave up wine? Life is too short to give up wine! I actually slept much better without it. And I opened a bottle last night.

A friend at church has dropped a LOT of weight. Her doctor told her to cut back on carbs and at no more than 33 grams of carbs in a meal. That's all it took. I'd give up meat before I gave up wine. I did this several years ago and did drop a bunch of weight. But I would have cut you for a piece of bread. I can't live like that. I'll just keep going to the gym instead. I'm going to eat all the bread I want. Well, unless I develop an allergy or something.

Look at people, everywhere you go people aren't just fat they are HUGE! I know I need to lose 20 pounds and its not for months but years. Over 15 years ago I weighed 215, then I lost 40 pounds, I had to walk 2 miles a day on the tread mill and practically starve myself, I measured and weighed everything. I kept it all off for about 7 years, prednisone was my downfall, but still I did good. Now I'm at 186 again and desperately need it off my feet. Thank god I'm tall still its to much. Now I'm having trouble staying active with my bad feet so trying to watch what I bring in the house and eat. DD is obese, she doesn't eat so much but moves little.
I see the women at the center where DD goes, they work there and these are young women, with hips that have shelves all around their bodies. What are they going to do as they age?
I understand your HR and I would work with them will help you and your company to keep insurance rates down.
Did you know hospitals have had to buy super wide wheel chairs, wider beds, nurses are breaking down trying to lift patients. The toilet are even breaking out of the walls and have to be reinforced to handle the patients.
I hear people in the doctors office moaning and groaning on walkers on oxygen, diabetic, high blood pressure and what they need is to lose weight. This is not something I would complain about.
My DIL is a health nut, she eats constantly, but fruits, veggies, small amounts of food, and she is 5'3" 114 pounds. She is a great influence on us.
I wish I was in an environment where people were constantly observant about weight. I still hope to lose this at least I quit gaining some time ago so that is at least a positive thing.

I am surprised that someone as active as you are gains weight. However, as we age, our metabolism does slow down and we have to be aware of what we eat and portion sizes. I can maintain my weight but losing more than a few pounds is an uphill battle. I exercise every day, but I am limited by extensive arthritis which cannot be treated with medication because of Coumidin.

I am 5'8" or a bit more, to be within the correct BMI, I believe its 175 or near that. I got down to 169 one time and I could eat practically nothing while still exercising. With my hypoglycemia I got into real trouble trying to do that. Still I'm careful and I will get it off, but have to hit that magic moment of will power. My foot is hurting so badly its near, I only hope it helps
I'm not as active, DH has taken a lot of the work off me so I'm not doing as much and am less active.

Not necessarily asking you to answer, but I'm always a little interested when people say things like "I'm 20 pounds overweight". From what weight are you 20 pounds over? The weight you want to be? The weight which would put you into a specific BMI range? The weight your doctor told you to shoot for?
Maybe it's just a guy thing? I've just never thought of it as "X lbs overweight/underweight/whatever". It's always "I'd like to lose X lbs, I'd like to put on X lbs of muscle, or something else". Or maybe it's just my more analytical side that wants something a bit more concrete.

I think people get a number in their head about what ideal weight should be and base it off that. Problem is, ideal weight doesn't equal fit all the time.
In HS I was just as tall as I am now, but weighed about 28 pounds lighter than I am now. I was very fit and am still very fit, but I don't think I'll be 130 pounds again in adulthood. And I'm pretty ok with it. I don't care what the scale says. I'm happy with myself the way I am.

My ideal weight is under 200 lbs. I will be thrilled when I get down to 160. Right now I'm at 213 or so. I've started doing more exercise just because I'm getting reeeeeeeeeeaaaaaallllllllllllllllly bored sitting on my ass watching DH sleep when I'm home. So I figured I'd start taking care of myself. Summertime is easy enough because I have a very large yard and no shortage of mowing and weeding and other fun projects. Winter will be different but I have a bunch of dvds to use and they'll help warm me up so why not. I have a stepper under my desk (using it right now!) but I am keeping an eye out for a full-fledged elliptical trainer on craigslist. I don't keep my clothes up here so it won't become a clothes rack.

If he can't have bread everyday, it can get ugly.

I will cut someone for carbs - that's my version of carb cutting. I get it. I am very surprised that I didn't feel more remorse and deprived my first week. Although, technically, I didn't cut carbs, just some grains. I had some potatoes one night, and we had corn last night, and I eat a lot of fruit - even the ones that are known to have a high glycemic value. I also kept maple syrup (real) and honey. So, I am still getting sugar, which I think helps a lot. I'm not sure about this whole coconut obsession that seems to prevail with the paleo/whole 30 crowd. I haven't gotten any coconut products. I'm sticking with olive oil.

Lol, so my DH was talking about getting a chocolate chip cookie from someone at work, then someone had German chocolate cake for their birthday, and after that, he noticed there were donuts in the kitchen. They looked really good, but he already had all the other sugar, so he cut off a little piece off of one for a taste. Lol! (He did say he normally takes the whole donut.)

When I got at my optimal weight, according to all charts, within my BMI, my period went away, my hair fell out, my skin looked like crap and my nails broke off. To maintain this weight, I had to eat no more than 1000 calories/day and exercise 5-6x/week 90 min....of which it included both lifting weight and aerobic activity. I looked great, felt like crap. I had to gain 30 lbs to get my period back, which put me at the overweight categorization according to the previous charts. So I think it is kind of funny that many consider that as long as the number on the scale is good....all is good. Doctors are particularly good at this, even though to get there and maintain things I had to ruin my joints to get there and eat nothing. IOW, my body hated 140, preferred 170 on my 5'9" frame.
