I've written a "collapse long posts" plugin for our board that I'm testing out. Based on settings you supply, it will collapse (that is, shorten) posts longer than a specified height so that they can be scrolled or expanded. It also optionally collapses quote blocks into one-line summaries when long posts are collapsed.
To try it out, tweak the new settings under the "Settings" tab after clicking "Edit Profile" on your profile page (remember to click the button to save). The settings you can configure are: collapse height, posts initially collapsed/expanded, and collapse quotes. Mousing over a long post will reveal a "handle" at the bottom of the post that can be clicked to expand/collapse the post.
Please let me know if you experience unexpected behaviour, such as collapse/expand not working, errors, settings not being respected, etc.

I like the 500 px that works just fine. 200 px and 300 px are too small.

Looked under "Settings"... no controls there. Did you turn it off?

is there any way to make it required (thinking those long posts on P/M that could just be links w/excerpt)??

For those having problems: Go to your Profile. Click on Edit Profile. Click on Settings. You'll see a list of Forum Preferences. Scroll to the bottom of the list (last item is Delete Forum Account, above that is Dates and Times). The three items listed above Dates and Times are the post and quote collapse functions, in this order: Collapse Long Posts Select the height at which long posts are collapsed. Initial Collapse Sets whether long posts are initially collpased or expanded. Collapsed Expanded Collapse Quotes Sets whether quote blocks are collapsed when a long post is collapsed. Yes No You can set those three to your liking, then click on Save Account Settings at the very bottom of the page (after Delete Forum Account). Lett us know if that doesn't help you.

Since I'm not at home, so I'm limited to my tablet, I'm going to let others try/test it out. But thank you for adding this, Virgil. It sounds like a good idea

The option isn't available on my setting page. On my Samsung tablets I am using one with a globe icon with Internet under it. On my desktop I am using Firefox.

OK. I've fixed what I believe the issue may be. See if the settings appear now.

First reaction - like very much. I don't hang out on other message boards. Is this normal to have someone say, "Can't we ..." and have it happen like this? I don't really want to know it is normal. I want to believe that I hang out on the absolute coolest message board in the world. Thanks Virgil Showlion and moon/Laura

A board has to have someone capable of creating these miracles. We're fortunate to have Virgil Showlion.

I'll check it out later when I have access to Chrome. It should run properly on any browser in Desktop mode.

... Mousing over a long post will reveal a "handle" at the bottom of the post that can be clicked to expand/collapse the post. ... To clarify: On my touch screen tablet, I tap the quote box to give me that "handle" and on a long post it just scrolls down. Works great.

Ok, when I do this on my tablet, I get the same thing and can hide it. I guess I thought that it would do it automatically and it would be 'click here to expand'. If you set the "Initial Collapse" setting to "Collapse", it will initially collapse all posts. If it isn't doing this, please let me know.
