On days when first lady Melania Trump and the couple's son, Barron, are the only ones in the city, security going forward will cost between $127,000 and $145,000 per day, less than when the president is in residence, O'Neill said.

When Trump is in town, the cost of police protection will go back up to $308,000 on average per day, O'Neill said. It will cost about another $4.5 million per year for the New York City Fire Department to protect the building, he said.

"We anticipate these costs will increase significantly whenever the president is in New York City," he said.

Trump has not been back to Manhattan since his inauguration.

New York Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney said in a statement on Wednesday that the city's taxpayers should not be forced to pay for a "national security obligation" and that "Congress must provide city taxpayers a full reimbursement."

I don't care where they want to live.  I really don't.   They should pay for it themselves if they dont want to live in the very nice already secured home provided for them.

If they all lived in the WH the cost would be absorbed by the regular secret service budget and spread out across all US taxpayers, but as it is the cost is being paid by the taxpayers of NYC and hopefully they get reimbursed by the gov.  They shouldn't have to pay for it and hope they don't get stiffed.

If this was in fly over country I know there would be a big outcry about how the Feds were walking over the poor people of wherever, but since it is NYC it is okay to screw them.

There is a different security level when they are not home.
At least in Chicago, it is not as physically evident, although normal citizens are not allowed to just wander by the residence on a whim whether they are there or not.
When I get back this spring, i will have to check it out now, and see if it has eased up, since D.C. is their new permanent residence.
Since it is, I imagine the Secret Service has moved on from the Chicago residence already.

Of course it's ok... Trump's being Transparent about it.   It's ok if everyone can see what you are doing.   Trump can profit all he wants! It's better that money goes to him (and his family and friends) then it go to the welfare queens and drug addicts and immigrants and children or the elderly.  People should have to WORK for their money - even if it's dishonest work.

It was all part of trumps get rich scheme. He built and lived in Trump Tower and Mara-Largo estate in anticipation of one day becoming POTUS and leaching off the tax payer.

It was quite a long game, but it obviously paid off nicely.

You never know about people, some women are abused or cheated on constantly and still stay with their spouse.

I would find it difficult or impossible in her situation but for some reason they are still together, her choice. She

Not everyone leaves for a new job and takes their kids. Since you like to spout military all the time, a lot of the time the spouse stays behind to finish out the school year. Sometimes they leave their senior child with friends so the kid can graduate with his or her friends. Sometimes just regular people do what is best for their kids and that means finishing out the school year. I'm sorry Melania was pressured to move before her son's school year was over.

This, to me, isn't an issue. Were I Melania, I would have made the same decision. The boy shouldn't be uprooted this close to the end of his school year, IMO. On the political front, we have bigger fish to fry than this to worry about.

I'd like to ask, How many of us have traveled more than an hour for work and chose to do so because we didn't want to move or uproot our kids from school and friends and family? I know I've traveled more than two hours one way for that very reason.

Personally, I think it is admirable that Melania and the Donald made this choice for the boy's sake. It's not easy to be uprooted from friends and family at any age. Kudos to them for choosing to let the boy finish school.
