We have the Daytona 500 race on the southeast redneck coast, and the Academy Awards on the alt left west coast.
Could we have a more obvious divided political country being represented by polar opposites on any given day, other than on election day?

From a reply in the link you failed to mention in your opening post (or is it just an uncanny coincidence you and Fox came up with the same thought): "How about this? Hollywood, the silver screen, famous movie stars.... pure America. Big badass V8 stock cars ripping around a track while we crush beers and wave the stars and bars and listen to a little country music.... pure America. Both of these things contribute to our culture and the story of what makes our country so awesome. Stop trying to get attention by further driving a political wedge between the peoples of this great country. -Sincerely, The Majority of America" NASCAR vs. Hollywood is a tale of two Americas

A bunch of cars doing the same thing 200 times. Awarding people for a wide variety of doing things well including vastly different "best pictures". Daytona 500 Daytona International Speedway is 2.5 miles (4 km) long and a 500-mile race requires 200 laps to complete. However, the race is considered official after half its distance (100 laps and 250 miles (400 km)) has been completed.

Good to know. FYI, I got the "thought" reading two different articles in my morning paper, which were on different pages of the paper, and neither article talked about divisiveness of the two groups. The Hollywood Oscar article did ponder if there would be a lot of political talk, but did not mention Daytona 500. Sorry for expressing an independent thought that we might want to reflect on here.

I was wondering if the nomination for Hell or High Water was a way for the academy to say "We see you" to the types of people who may have voted for Trump. Manchester by the Sea's characters may have been Trump supporters too, but it was told with a different voice. The message in Hell or High Water was clear - the system is out to get the poor, forgotten, hard working rural Americans. The banks that hold the loans are the bad guys. Guns are cool. Take care of yourself.
And how many awards will Hell or High Water get? I'd bet zero.

Could we have a more obvious divided political country being represented by polar opposites on any given day, other than on election day? Well, I for one am a West Coast liberal thinker, and not only have I never seen any of the pictures or performances nominated but consider ANY awards show to be right down there with infomercials, soap operas, and most reality TV as the worst things ever broadcast. And in fact I had a woman almost break up with me because I refused to even let her watch that stupid trash (the Academy Awards) at my house. On the other hand, I have on occasion (though more when I was younger) watched stock-car racing. I go back to the David Pearson, Cale Yarborough, Bobby and Allison, Richard Petty days. Given a choice between the two...? To answer your question, No, I don't consider it a valid line of demarcation.

I guess I should rescind my American citizenship since I haven't watched awards shows in who knows how long and have never seen a nascar race. What island should the rest of us move to so this country will be one big STEPFORD citizens place ??

During the health care debate, Fox News has put a megaphone to opponents, some of whom have advanced far-fetched theories about the impact of reform. And for the Academy awards it's all about SEX!!! the spectators are expecting to see beautiful people in beautiful clothes they can fantasize about while waiting with baited breath for a clothing malfunction OR a major star couple break up or some other juicy gossip...

Nice try, but you'd still have to pay me good money to watch cars drive around in a circle 200 times. Of course, you'd also have to pay me good money to watch celebrities accept awards and pontificate for two hours. If something blows up at either of the two events, I might take a peek.

Most tracks are oval. Daytona is technically a tri-oval. Would that make a difference to you? Circles would be terrible for racing, so I can understand not wanting to watch that.

What exactly is a tri-oval? In my mind I'm picturing a 3-leaf clover shape, but I'm pretty sure I've never seen a race track that looks like that.

Now if this is the shape of the race track, with the overlapping portions being actual intersections, I could see the race getting interesting.

They take the name from the two shapes, triangle and oval. It is an oval with a bulge on one side so that it resembles a triangle with rounded corners. One long straightaway and two shorter ones.

But not even hearing about these has me feeling old and disconnected. Unless Hollywood really plumbed the depths of obscurity to find nominees. Now that I think about it, I seem to recall my parents mentioning they'd seen "Arrival". But still.

Gotcha. I've heard tell the only reason people go to race car rallies is to talk about cars, drink beer, and eat junk food. The actual racing is more like a side attraction to fill in the gaps.
