shanendoah: 9/25/2017 $810 (Goal: $960)
First paycheck with my raise today. Except I also purchased parking passes (pre-tax) out of this paycheck, so I won't actually know what my new paychecks will look like on a regular basis until 10/10.

I accidentally backed my SUV into my sister's SUV this week. $1500 of damage to my back end, $1000 to her front end. Thank goodness for insurance, it's all going to be covered. I just hope that the body shop over estimated the repair bill, so that I am not out $500 for my deductible. Everyone, cross EVERYTHING. Otherwise, the E.F. takes an automotive hit again this year. In happier news, DS1's goal was met this month after we deposited his birthday money! He's pretty excited about "having $1500 in my bank!" That's a whole lotta dinero to a 7 year old!

Thank you for the shoutout! So...one trip to the Southwest and one trip to Florida done. Both went on the credit card. School started three weeks ago and I'm waiting for the VA to get their crap straight and pay for my tuition for this term (to the school) as well as August's housing allowance (~$500) and the term's book allowance (~$500)(both directly to me). With the change to the GIBill (now the Forever GIBill rather than the Post-9/11 GIBill) and the VA website being down, who knows when that will happen. Hopefully soon. I pulled money from the larger EF to pay off the credit card. The money from the VA will go to replenish the larger EF. I got a roommate--rent $500/mo--and I've started using what he pays me as my grocery money. It's only been a few weeks so I'm working the full $500 into my budget in a more useful manner. Still working on that one. I will probably use it to fund my Wawa gift card/gas fund too. That would enable me to allocate those line item amounts to other things. The LTC insurance is getting paid this week so a large chunk of $$ got transferred into my checking, today, in anticipation of going out on Friday when John Hancock makes its withdrawal. I still have plane tickets to purchase for November's trip to Florida but I'm going to hold off for another week or so on that one. Thankfully BWI to FLL is rarely ever expensive. ($200 max) And then tickets to the West coast for most of December. Those won't be bought until October. So, to summarize: I've less than I did in July but I'm still maintaining a "not in the hole" status. I anticipate October will show a more obvious forward movement. The VA is still backlogged. When they pay me, it'll include both August and September housing stipends and the book allowance. With September being a full month, I can expect upwards of $2000, total, from them. No plane ticket purchases yet. The LTC is over and done with for 2017; and 2018 is at 70% saved. I reached the next $1000 mark in income from my part-time so, at some point, I'll be able to contribute to my Roth. A question about Roths...If my military pension is taxed at both the federal and state level, does that count as income?

A question about Roths...If my military pension is taxed at both the federal and state level, does that count as income? Nope. It has to be from "earned income"...money you acquired from directly working. Things like pensions, SS, interest and dividends don't count even if they're taxed.

Just wanted to make sure that I was correct in paying attention to only my part-time job. YTD net for that just surpassed $2000.

Hi all, sorry I've been absent for so long. Our fur baby has cancer. Tomorrow we're going to let him go. I hope to be ready to join you again in 2018.

Good morning Savers Good work all! I am at a friend's home in mountains of NC to help while she rehabs from knee replacement surgery. I'm using my friend's pad to do Shout Outs so it could take a bit longer. I'm going to block off a few response spaces and do groups of about 5 each. Your patience is appreciated. Keep up the good work!

Shout Outs Part 1 azucena Congratulations on your savings and debt elimination accomplishments. Though your focus is presently more on debt elimination, please continue to update here. If no numbers to report, then strategies? We are in the home stretch of 2017, we can all be looking forward to 2018 goals. I am eager to see your plans for the new year! bankergurl Good news that your car problem turned out to be fixable and free!!! I pray you were not near the tragedy in Las Vegas, though surely your heart is breaking for this town that you frequent. Congratulations on your continued success as a saver and on being only about $2K away from your 2017 goal Jaguar You are making headway with $1760 saved which earns your ! And 3 roses!!! I like your mini goal to have $1K in your moving fund by December, yes, you can do this. minnesotapaintlady You continue to run an amazing saving race, with over 86% achieved, and even higher when factoring that one of your goals is 2018 ROTH. I see a dancing banana in your future movinonup Kudos on achieving nearly 130% of your goal... next up getting your ski fund filled up so you can play hard as well as working hard

Shout Outs Part 2 nidena It must be very challenging managing your money with the V A running behind. Good for you using your part-time job to build your ROTH account. Looking forward to your update after you get your August and September monies. nikiz628 congrats on achieving DS1's savings goal, good work teaching the boys about saving! Double Murphy eh? I did that a few years ago with about the same expense. DH (almost always) left before me and the one day he didn't I just didn't look before backing. It makes for a lot of fun telling the story MUCH later. Yes thank goodness for insurance, and EF which is a kind of insurance. Congrats on 52.4% saved. Yea for tipping the savings scale past the 50% mark!!! regecko Any word yet on the status of your raise?? Looking forward to seeing your new numbers Saving4Norway I am so sorry you had to let go of your beloved fur baby. HUGS friend. We miss you and look forward to your return. sealy Congrats on getting rolling again. Be sure to give a tag line so Serious can get you into the updates!

Shout Outs Part 3 seriousthistime Good job tucking away another $827 in September! And soon you'll be at 70% and more!! Thanks so much for your work in keeping the Savers summed up and smiled at shanendoah Good for you achieving 87% of your bumped up goal! You've grown so much in your abilities to save in the face of adversity. Yea for November and building your savings by $400/month. Hopefully there is even more light coming down the pike for you in 2018!! snapdragon Good work Snap managing your mom's affairs and belongings. So good that it is progressing in a timely way to keep expenses down. And hopefully it will help lower stress too. Though your last update came in just after Serious did updates, gonna go ahead and note you are now THISCLOSE to 90%. Very nice!! And good for you planning savings for property tax into next year's goals! tobinikui I can empathize with your feeling that the year 2017 has been a continual "butt kicker". Having younger children can mean shifting a lot to keep the family and each member functional and relatively happy. (It is that way for us when family members are aging into retirement & health issues.) Good to see you're already on the board for October trimatty471 Kudos on your continued upward path...$16016 saved for 92% achieved. Dancing banana headed your way very soon chiver78 It's good to see you are watching the board, supporting your fellow Savers. Have you started to draft your goals for 2018? megaptera C'mon in, the water's fine. There are 11 weeks left of 2017. How about a 2017 mini goal to get you warmed up for 2018??

Shout Outs Part 4 I've been away from home a lot lately which has left me out of touch here. I've missed you Saver Friends. Congrats to all for savings efforts and successes in September, and so far in October. Missing some of our Savers who have been away, and hoping to see them very soon: finnime Poptart shopaholic814 teachermom TheHaitian ...Please message me if I have overlooked an update whether it's numbers or general checking in. Thank you! Thanks to our quiet or silent partners in saving who support us with their presence and words of encouragement & experience: lund zibazinski dee27 debthaven @bamafan1954 . Keep up the good work all. It can get tiring and tiresome as we race into the home stretch of 2017, some hopes/goals have been hindered. I am there, treading water without forward motion. I'll try dog paddling again soon. Goodnight for now

I forgot it was the beginning of the month! Here is my update anyway (don't worry about including me in shoutouts because I'm late). I didn't make a lot of progress again this month. Not only has my raise still not been finalized (sigh... I don't mind waiting, but at least give me some indications!), but all of my equipment was stolen on a business trip earlier this month. I had to do some savings-raiding to make it happen. Also, I had an ant invasion, so $250 from my already-depleted House Maintenance fund. I'm really itching to re-do my budget, but I'm still trying to wait on my raise to figure this out. If nothing has happened by the end of the year, I'm going to rework it for Jan 1 regardless of a change in income - I just want to streamline/adjust some things! I work better if I have goals set in front of me.

Snapdragon 10/04/17 --- $ 8932.84 / $ 10,000 -- update
Car/House $ 1994.29 / $1500 Savings $ 3703.67 / $4000 Travel $ 3234.88 / $4500 New Totals $ 8932.84 / $10,000 I am out from under Mom's house! It sold and the paperwork finalized at the end of September. So happy that I don't have to pay the lot fee or any utilities this month. Now it is just a waiting game for probate to be done. And taxes. I can't forget about the taxman. Next year I will be adding a few lines to my board. I know one will be property taxes. Everyone keep trucking along. Snap~

Great news!! I received my GIBill $$ Paid off the CC Fully funded my LTC Ins 2018 savings Redeemed cash rewards from my CC and added more to the Vehicle savings with it Replenished my Larger EF back to 80% of goal (from 60%) I'm still lower, in total, than I was in July so no $$ amounts. But, come Nov 1st, I'll be able to fully fund the Larger EF and throw some at the 2017 Roth. Even though I've made enough, YTD, to contribute a second thousand to the Roth, I haven't put anything towards it 'cause...life. lol. The roommate is moving out. Six weeks was long enough of dealing with someone who can't do simple things to keep my cats from getting into mischief (close toilet lids, closet doors, etc) or easy preventative mx things (cover shower drain w/hair trap, don't vomit in the sink, etc). I don't need the extra $500 that bad. Not to mention, he used in ONE month an amount of water equal to what I use in NINE months. Seriously! My quarterly usage is 4000 gallons. The bill for Jul 1st-Sep 30 had a usage of 17000. He moved in Aug 26th. All in all, things are moving in a positive direction. The power of Nam Myoho Renge Kyo!!

Man, this year is kicking my butt. I ended up moving money around (surprise, surprise), and now I'm not sure I will be able to pay it back. We had previously put DS in 3 morning a week preschool, but DH is pretty much at his breaking point with the kids. We will be changing DS from morning preschool to 3 full days, as well as adding in 2 days a week for DD. It is a matter of sanity, survival, and both mental and physical health at this point. *sigh* I hope this will help DH snap out of his funk a bit. Life has been difficult lately, to say the least.

nidena - WHOA, was he filling swimming pools when you weren't around?!?!? Well, he was averaging two showers a day, doing a few loads of laundry each week (I do five loads about every three weeks), and his guests were also taking showers. He averaged one guest every other day over the course of those six weeks and most of the showers were upwards of 20 minutes. On the flip side, he never did dishes because he uses disposable stuff.

nidena , it sounds like you had a heck of a roommate! I would try to find someone else though. $500/month is not insignificant. Even if you don't "need" the money, it would help with your goals. And it would be great to have help with your pets when you're travelling (I'd offer a reduction in rent during those times.) Is there a university near you? Maybe a (foreign?) grad student? Someone who would be less likely to have all those guests . But doing several loads of laundry a week seems normal to me. ETA: There are also exchange programs that pay people to host foreign HS students. That may not be your thing though (which I understand).

Yeah, I wasn't actually putting that part as a negative just something that contributed to the increase in water usage: going from four or five loads a month to 13ish a month will definitely put a demand on the system. And, when I was gone for Labor Day weekend, I decreased his rent for those couple days. I won't be doing the roommate thing again. I also started the tutoring gig at my school a couple weeks ago and that's $8.75/hr, 9 hr/wk. It's not $500 but it's an additional sum and I get to keep my sanity. lol.

Congrats on the tutoring gig! I agree, that's better than having a roommate lol.

Okay. I now know what the new paycheck looks like. I've looked at all the numbers over the last few months, and I've run the math for paying off the credit cards before the 0% promotional periods run out. There will be a few more legal fees added in on Friday. I've best guessed them in running my math. But per that math, I should be able to start saving $400/month starting in November. Now, the assumption is that $250 of that each month is really for car maintenance and $100 for the car insurance (which I pay every 6 months). However, I am planning on selling the second car soon. That will reduce the car maintenance and the insurance, meaning more of that money will be for actual savings, perhaps giving me a head start on the Canary Islands fund.
